BJJ, MMA and being vegan...............
tdog replied to xdarthveganx's topic in General Fitness/Other Sports
I hear you man it can be frustrating but I think I am pretty fortunate my instructor Ryan Kelly at nwma is also a vegan. I also train here in Roseburg with some other vegans and vegetarians they are a pretty rocking bunch. Some poeple just try to find fault with our healthy diet to somehow justify their own food choices. I like to think that part of them is touched by the simplicity, and the fact that it just makes sense whether they admit it or not. -
sesame- spirulina bars a dessert that is also a super-powered tonic. Yeild: 12-16 servings 1/2 cup coconut oil 1/3 cup agave 1/2 teaspoon celtic salt 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/4 cup spirulina 3/4 cup sesame seeds 3/4 cup pine nuts Combine all ingredients in a bowl and mix thoruoghly. Press the mixture into an 8'' x 10'' glass pan. Refrigerate the mixture for 1 hour and cut it into squares before serving. I think that you will really enjoy this they are very tasty. The recipe comes from Rawsome cookbook.

To answer the question about the pre-packaged cleanses sold in health food stores, yes they do work. They have a bunch of herbs in them that help with the specific cleanse that you are trying to do. Otherwise, you can try other fasts, like the Master Cleanse. It is really intense, but you do get results. I'm sure you have heard of it, the one where you only consume a mixture of lemon juice, cayenne pepper, and maple syrup(and water, of course)for up to a month(we have only lasted 7 days on it!, but know people who have done it for a couple of weeks or more. You can also check out Linda Page's Healing book, it has a great area that has cleanse ideas for specific areas of your body(liver, skin, gallbladder, lung, etc, etc.). Her cleanses are a little bit more managable. Make sure to take the herbs milk thistle(silymarin)and dandelion. They help cleanse and support the liver. If you have never done a cleanse before, just realize that you may feel a little yucky, it's part of the process. You will be stirring up those toxins and eliminating them. Make sure that you are going #2 at least 3 times a day during your cleanse. If you aren't , take a laxative tea like Traditional Medicinals Smooth move(or try senna leaves, but not too much, they are very potent). And remember that it is totally worth it! It may be rough at times, but you will be glad you did it in the end. Good luck! (PS My wife and I do work in "one of those health food stores".......the products that are sold in natural food stores are very effective, no snake oil here! ) tdog(with a little help from his wife)

tdog replied to xdarthveganx's topic in Health & Nutrition Programs
It just takes time man, I was about 250 when I started doing jui jitsu about 21/2 years ago and Iam now 175 and shooting for 165. I think that rolling around can be great cardio, but going on long road rides is what really me lose even more weight. I just got done reading Brendon Brazier's book Thrive I think it is a great book for athletes of all kinds. -
