  2. Please take a moment to sign the petition at the link below or better yet, call the US Miliary, write, send emails, CROSS POST. Please. This is insanity. http://www.thepetit ionsite.com/ 2/clemency- for-ratchet Soldier who saved puppy from life of hardship in Iraq could see her dog executed by U.S. superiors By Eddie Wrenn/World News Online Last updated at 7:23 PM on 07th October 2008 Young Ratchet could face the death-penalty by U.S. Army officials A soldier who saved the life of a young puppy in Iraq and expected to bring him back home with her could see her dog executed by her U.S. superiors. Sgt. Gwen Beberg befriended puppy Ratchet while serving in Iraq, and sent regular dispatches to her home in Minneapolis charting the dog's process, with 100s of fans tuning in on Facebook to follow the pup's life. But the U.S. military takes a strict line with soldiers befriending animals, and confiscated Ratchet as Sgt. Beberg prepared to fly home from Baghdad Airport at the weekend. Now animal charity Operation Baghdad Pups, which has the motto 'No buddy gets left behind', is pleading with the U.S. Army to allow Ratchet to fly out of the country - amid fears the military will shoot the puppy in the head execution-style. Sgt. Beberg's mother Patricia said: 'This year has been extremely difficult on my daughter and her family. It has been a year of disappointments, loneliness, and fear because of all the sacrifices the army has required of Gwen. 'Ratchet was the savior of her sanity. Now they have cruelly ripped Ratchet away from her and sentenced him to death. I don't know how my daughter will cope. Ratchet has been her lifeline.' Sgt. Beberg is also under military investigation for befriending the dog that saved her life. A close friend of Sgt Beberg said: 'It hasn't been easy for her - and the puppy she saved has been one of the few things that has kept her going. 'She's shared pictures of him as he grew from a frightened ball of fur to an adorable young dog. Gwen with 'lifeline' Ratchet in Iraq 'She's kept us up-to-date on his travel schedule, and badgered us into contributing money to bring him home. 'Soldiers can face immediate court-marshal for befriending animals and some even see their animals brutally murdered by a direct gunshot to the head from commanding officers who will not bend the rules. 'It was so close... Ratchet was on his way to the airport. And now he might be killed, just because some power-hungry officers decided to flex their muscles and punish an innocent animal because Gwen dared to care about him.' One soldier wrote to Baghdad Pups: 'I have sacrificed a lot to serve my country. All that I ask in return is to be allowed to bring home the incredible dog that wandered into my life here in Iraq and prevented me from becoming terribly callous towards life.' The charity Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals International has joined Baghdad Pups in asking the U.S. Army to show clemency to Ratchet, and allow the dog to return to gwen's parents in Minneapolis and friends of Gwen have launched a campaign to get American senators to intervene. Ratchet as a puppy: An international campaign has now been set up to save the Army's policy
  3. Uggh, I have had to come back again to this thread because I just tried the number myself and it isnt even friggin working. Sorry, I should have tried it before I posted this. I emailed the person who sent it to me and I guess she also did not verify. The problem when stuff like this gets posted far and wide is that you never know who to trace it back to -- I have no idea who "Gloria from the Artists corner" is. Anyway, I just sent an email address to the one provided in the alert. For those of you that can help, please please do the same and let her know (assuming this is not a hoax and some fictional email address). Again, if you need to contact me please do so via email through the forum as I dont participate here anymore. Thanks.
  4. Thanks for all your replies, but just for future reference, when I post action alerts and you are able to assist, please contact the individuals mentioned in the action alert I post directly, and let them know what/how you can help-- there is no point in telling me by posting a reply to the thread as I would not normally be checking on a thread after my initial post because, remember, I am NOT an active user here anymore . If however you need to reach me or have any questions, please EMAIL me via the forum. I'd be happy to speak with you one and one privately. Michelle, thanks for your kind offer and I am sure your offer to transport is needed so please contact the person named directly. Pelican Andrew, if your girlfriend can help out then please have her call the contact person directly also, you never know what they need until you talk to them directly. Thanks to all of you who are able to help in some way. [/b]
  5. Please cross post/email far and wide!!! Haven't checked up on this, "but it did come from Artists At Large Gloria of the Artful Corner. Contact info below. Does anybody know anybody in Austin, Texas that could help foster or adopt one of these dogs?????? AKC Pekinese dogs need homes-FAST A Pekinese breeder outside of Katy passed away and they MUST get rid of 140 dogs and puppies. They are UTD on shots, AKC registered and microchipped. The executor of the estate [that prick!] says all pekes not adopted/picked up by FRIDAY will be euthanised. If you can help, please contact Amy Green [email protected] or 832-453-6377 "
  6. Uff, how did this turn into a debate? I never said that donating toward this legal action will guarantee its success. You know that is not what I meant as the suggestion is absurd. What IS guaranteed though is that if we are not able to raise enough funds, we will be unable to proceed legally and then FOR SURE we will not succeed. The comment about "truly deserving campaigns and individuals". Is that meant to suggest that this campaign and this individual (Teja's Animal Refuge) is not "truly deserving"? This is a woman over 60 who battles chronic fatigue syndrome yet gets up every day at 5 am to take care of the 50 animals she has in her sanctuary - work that is extremely labourt intensive - and as if this wasnt enough on her plate, she has taken on the largest puppy mill operator in Quebec, WITHOUT the help of corrupt groups like the local SPCA. If this is an individual that is not deserving, I dont know who is. Perhaps when any of you are in Ontario or Quebec you could meet Nicole, as it would be YOUR privilege to do so. As far as "many folks here do not know you personally" comment, I have been on this board for years, even before you knew it existed. So many of the old timers I would hope know me well enough to trust me enough to send a freakin dollar to Teja's Animal Refuge at my urgent plea for financial support. Boy was I freakin wrong - another reminder of how the countless hours I have spent on this board over the last few years has been an utter waste of my time. I clearly have not even built enough goodwill to raise ten bucks from the old timers at VBB. AT the very least, it would have been more helpful if these "hesitant folks" were to speak up and tell me what I could do to reassure them. perhaps the following information will help: Nicole Joncas has been in rescue for over 20 years. She founded Teja's Animal Refuge and got her incorporation in 2004. Her incorporation # is 85496 4202 RC0001. This information can easily be verified for those that are hesitant. If you would like to see a copy of the official motion to institute proceedings that was filed in court, let me know and I could gladly email you it with the official court file number, which you can then verify. LL, if I was seeking pledges for running a marathon or some other type of similar event to raise funds for a good cause, being along time member of VBB I really wouldnt expect from some VBB members the attitude of "well I am not going to help you out because I dont personally know you even though I have read your posts for the last three years and have interacted with you via emails and pms during that time." Uff, anyway, enough said. The information is there for those of you that are remotely interested in seeing animal law progress in favour of animals. DO with it what you wish.
  7. LL, surely you can scrounge up one tiny little dollar for the campaign? I am dead serious when I said no amount is too small. Forgive my agrressiveness, but the Lamarche and Pinard mill dogs cannot afford for me to be shy and soft in my efforts to fundraise for this lawsuit. I need to do whatever it will take to persuade people to give any amount they can to this campaign, even if it is one literally ONE DOLLAR. Thanks for all that you all do for animals - I know there are so many great causes and not enough $$ to go around to support them all.
  8. 34 views and not a single dollar donated? C'mon, people, I know you can do better than that. Let me be clear about this: This lawsuit is the LAST CHANCE that the hundreds of thousands of breeding dogs trapped in Quebec's hellish 2000 + puppy mills have. They never see the light of day, they are never walked, they never know even a modicum of human kindness. For all their lives they breed and breed until they cannot breed anymore where they are typically thrown into an incinerator alive, or beaten to death, or drowned. They never know what fresh, clean water is, and they have to fight for the little food that they get. Puppy mills are hell on earth for dogs, and Quebec is the worst province in Canada for puppy mills, with a corrupt system of government that is standing by and allowing these places to continue operating even though we have videotaped and photographic evidence of this horrendous abuse, and we know the exact whereabouts of several mills. PLEASE donate today - no amount is too small.
  9. Again, any amount is appreciated and no amount is too small. Small amounts add up if enough people contribute. And I should also note that the motion to institute proceedings has already was filed last month in Montreal's Superior Ccourt, so we are up and running, with an attorney who has kindly agreed to do this for literally peanuts. It is however a big case and will take up a lot of the attorney's time and resources, and the defendant's have deep pockets, so we need to raise as much funds as possible to sustain this. For the voiceless prisoner's and victims of a greedy industry and the victims of government corruption and inertia, Natalie P.S. Go give your doggy a hug from me.
  10. or a lot of cash, depending on what you could afford. But ANY amount will help, so please read on. Dear friends of animals, I am writing to urgently request your help in raising funds to sustain a critical and unprecedented lawsuit that we hope will help the animals of Quebec, and in particular the dogs that are forced to breed and die in Quebec’s abhorrent puppy mills. Quebec is the worst puppy mill province in Canada, as there is an inertia, to put it mildly, on the part of provincial authorities to enforce the province’s animal welfare legislation. A case can be made for corruption and conflicts of interest in these agencies also. A few years back, Mr. Gilles Potvin, a former employee of a puppy mill operated by Lamarche and Pinard came forward to expose the pitiful and deplorable conditions of the animals in that mill and the gratuitous abuse to which they were routinely subjected by other mill workers. Mr. Potvin approached and sought the help of animal advocate and rescuer, Nicole Joncas, who operates Teja’s Animal Refuge, the plaintiff in the above-mentioned lawsuit. Since then, Ms. Joncas has tirelessly toiled to secure justice for the voiceless victims in this Lamarche and Pinard “facility”, but to no avail. Over the last few years, she and others have approached various provincial officials and filed countless reports of animal cruelty (which has been captured on videotape and in photographs of the facility) with the provincial police and also groups whose mandate it is to protect animals from abuse and enforce laws that are in place to ensure the welfare of these animals. None of these agencies and bodies have been responsive or helpful. They have failed to take any meaningful or adequate action against the operators of this appalling mill or take any action to rescue the animals in this mill, even though the law gives them the mandate to do so; in fact, many have even hindered and attempted to thwart the noble and compassionate efforts of Ms. Joncas to help these voiceless prisoners of greed. As a result, after exhausting every other possible avenue, including, but not limited to, peaceful demonstrations outside of the mill and an aggressive letter writing campaign to pressure authorities to take action for the dogs, Ms. Joncas has had no choice but to attempt to force the government’s hand by bringing a court action against the government and also against Lamarche and Pinard, who are named as the defendants in the motion to institute to proceedings. A copy of the motion can be provided to anybody interested in reading it. In layman’s terms, we are basically seeking permission to sue the Quebec government for failing to enforce the animal protection law in Quebec (which is arguably one of the strongest pieces of animal welfare legislation in Canada!). This case is huge, and, while we recognize that legal courses of action have their limits and drawbacks, we believe ms. Joncas’s success in court will not only help the animals currently suffering in Lamarche and Pinard faclities, but also will set a precedent that can serve to protect many animals in Quebec and possibly nationally. However, this will not be cheap, and the plaintiff, Teja's Animal Refuge, already has limited resources that are barely enough to cover the costs in caring for the countless animals, including horses, bulls, chickens, pigs, dogs and cats, that have been rescued and are living out the remainder of their lives safely and peacefully, at Teja’s Animal Refuge. So, I ask each and every one of you to please donate as much as you can afford to the plaintiff in this case, Teja’s Animal Refuge, to finance this important lawsuit for the animals. Even if all you can afford is a few bucks, we would appreciate any amount that your finances and situation allow you to donate at this time to this worthy campaign. I just set up the pay pal link today, so hopefully it will work properly for you. If you encounter any difficulties or have any feedback, please post it in this thread or pm me. here is the link to make a donation to Teja's in support of the lawsuit: https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_xclick&business=nkuyumcu%40hotmail%2ecom&no_shipping=0&no_note=1&tax=0&currency_code=CAD&lc=CA&bn=PP%2dDonationsBF&charset=UTF%2d8 Also, please feel free to share any fundraising ideas or experience you may have which you feel would be helpful to Teja’s. We are currently working on embedding a donate button right into Teja's Website (www.tejasanimalrefuge.ca) or alternatively, creating a website that specifically has information and updates about the lawsuit. Thanks so much for ANY help you can give. Without the help of caring people who are fed up with people in power failing the animals, we will not be able to see this through to the end. Please feel free to pm me if you have any questions. Natalie
  11. Okay, guys, stop emailing me and asking me to "set people straight" about animal issues on this forum and how it isnt the same without me here (you know who you are). . I appreciate your kind support and am flattered that people loved my posts so much and miss me, but the administration chose Barrylove (and his solid and extensive contribution to the forum ) over me with no apologies, (yep, many people are probably asking "barry who?" ) so I have moved on. Instead, I encourage you all to educate posters on this forum regarding issues about which they seem to be misinformed. Just email me what you need and I can send you the info and you can post it here yourselves. But I'd rather not be signed on here, unless I am posting about something urgently time sensitive to help animals. Okay, so, about the seal hunt and what activists are doing... You asked the following question, Gaia and Matt: "But what I don't understand is why everybody gets all hostile and starts yelling and collecting money to stop them. "What do the animal rights activists do with all that money? Do they pay people to go out and try to stop the seal killers? Do they buy up land as sanctuaries? How about paying these people not to kill them? Why doesn't someone come up with an idea of giving this town a different livelihood?" Answer: The movement against the seal hunt, and in particular, Paul Watson and his group the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, HAS offered alternatives to brutally murdering baby seals. Unfortunately, the reality that is NOT shown on programs like the one you watched Gaia is that these sealers and their official Sealing Association, have rejected the alternatives with scorn and vitriol. Does that sound like a bunch of poor, decent folks who hate the brutal blood bath that is the seal hunt but murder baby seals with remorse and only because they have no economic choice? I will provide you with two examples that come to me off the top of my head. The Sea Shepherd had, several years, ago planned and executed the "seal brushing project" which was a no kill alternative to the seal hunt. This alternative to the blood bath which the Sea Shepherd proposed to the killers involved the utilization of naturally molted seal hairs. Paul Watson did not stop there. He even secured a market for this and was in a position to hire 300 people to start when the government pulled their permits after rioting sealers in the Magdalens attacked Watson and his crew, saying that it was a "faggoty idea and seals were meant to be clubbed not coddled." And by the way, the riotting sealing thugs (yup, much like that poor old man you saw on the program ) who attacked Watson and his crew for proposing these alternatives, beat Watson severely, broke cameras and threatened people's lives. Read Mickey Dwyer's book. He's a sealer who wrote "Over the Side, Mickey." Even he describes what they do as barbaric. Furthermore, understand that the seal slaughter is subsidized. In other words it's a glorified welfare system. If the government paid the sealers not to kill seals, it would cost the Canadian tax-payers less. As a Canadian taxpayer, (let alone as an ethical vegan) I can tell you that I am sickened by the seal hunt. Let me provide you with a second more recent example: Sea Shepherd member Cathy Kangas wrote the Government of Canada the following letter, offering the government $16 million dollars to stop the hunt among other things. Do you know how the Canadian Government, with the encouragement of the Sealing Association, responded to this very generous offer to help the "poor sealers" find a less bloody and brutal way of life? THEY NOT ONLY DID NOT STOP THE HUNT, BUT THEY RAISED THE NUMBER OF BABY SEALS TO BE KILLED! Still feel sympathy for these barbaric sealers? Below is Kangas's proposal to the Government of Canada and to the sealing association. Please read it, again, it will answer your questions. CATHY KANGAS 106 CLEARVIEW LANE NEW CANAAN, CONNECTICUT 06840 March 21, 2006 The Right Honourable Stephen Harper Office of the Prime Minister 80 Wellington Street Ottawa, Ontario Canada, KIA O42 Dear Prime Minister Harper: Your government has repeatedly stated that the $16 million realized from the slaughter of Canadian baby seals is vital to the fishing communities of the Gulf of St. Lawrence and Newfoundland. If you stop this year's hunt immediately, we will provide you with this $16 million to be distributed at your discretion. Furthermore, we will work with your government to institute a program to buy back the fishing licenses and begin a program of eco-tourism in Northeastern Canada, which would replace the seal hunt. Through this program, high-end tour companies, such as Abercrombie & Kent, would provide opportunities for its customers to see the beautiful spectacle of seals giving birth on the ice floes. This could be a whole new source of revenue for the region and fishermen could serve as Park Rangers showing the seals and protecting them. The eyes of the world will be on Canada when the seal hunt begins. We are providing you with an alternative to what Paul McCartney called "a stain on the character of the Canadian people." If this is really simply an economic problem, then take our offer. The money is being raised from animal protection groups worldwide including The Humane Society of the United States, which alone has more than 9 million members. We are asking you to negotiate with us in good faith. If we do not hear back from your office before the start of the hunt, we will have no other choice than to take this offer to the Canadian people and worldwide media. We are providing the Canadian government with an opportunity to end the seal hunt and provide fishermen with an alternative livelihood. We look forward to discussing this offer with you. I can be reached through my assistant Diane Jacobitti at (941) 929-7435. Sincerely, Cathy Kangas ----- The sad thing is that Kangas did in fact take this offer and the government's rejection of it to the Canadian (and international media); yet, I am not aware of a single news channel or newspaper that printed this side of the story. Instead, the media continues to make it sound like the sealers' claims are accurate and true - oh those poor sealers, being villified by those pesky ar activists who keep giving them alternatives. The bottom line, however, is that the seal hunt is NOT necessary, as sealers and those who support them would have you believe. Alternatives have been offered and proposed, money has been offered. But of course even vegans are not aware of those details because the government of canada and newfoundland does NOT want the world to hear about those details. They would rather make themselves out to be destitute decent communities who murder baby seals not because they LIKE to, but because they currently have no other choice. And that, as you now know, is categorically not true. I hope that helps. Finn, thanks for bringing the seal hunt issue back into discussion and into mind.
  12. First off, in light of the emails and pm's I received welcoming me back with joy, I should point out that this is an OLD thread that has been resurrected. I am sorry to disappoint my friends here, but you all have my email address as it is posted in my profile and I'd be happy to correspond with you via email, because no, I am not back (and some of you know why). Unless, of course, a thread is brought to my attention in which there is a misinformed but well intentioned consumer, and wherein animals need a voice - in this case, it is the free range hens that need a voice as nobody has yet educated Lisaann on what free range really means. So, Lisaann, I will respond to your reply of "veganism isnt for everybody." This will be a one shot deal. If a debate ensues, others will have to carry it forward. Lisaann, while you are clearly a well-intentioned, kind hearted person, I regret to inform you that "cage free egg farming is, above all else, a business. Consequently, profit surpasses concern for the animals' comfort, welfare, or behavioral needs. Furthermore, even if cage free hens were treated with kindness and given all the space they could use (and it is by no means clear that cage free hens are treated kindly as the industry would have us believe), they would still be killed for meat when their egg production wanes, usually after one or two years, even though in her natural environment a hen could love about 15 years. And, like all animals raised for food, they will be subjected to the horrors and abuses of transportation, handling, and slaughter." It has been said by writers and commentators in the field of animal rights (Jim Mason off the top of my head), that if a person refuses to go vegan, then the animals are better off if that person boycotts just the egg and dairy industries instead of just the flesh industries. This is because animals in the egg and dairy industries suffer for a longer period of time than animals killed for their flesh. "An inherent problem with ALL egg production, whether cageless, or otherwise, is the disposal of unwanted male chicks at the hatchery. Because male chicks don't lay eggs and do not grow fast enough to be raised profitably for meat, they are deemed a financial liability, except for the few that are used as rooster studs. On average, one rooster is used to service ten hens. Hence, nine out of ten male chicks are considered virtually useless and will be killed by the cheapest means available, including suffocation and being ground up alive. No matter what words or systems are used to candy coat animal production, when we treat sentient beings as commodities, we invariably invite abuse." When you purchase your cage free eggs, THIS is what you are supporting, and that is a fact. And it is unfair to these animals, it is deny them the most basic rights, to assert that veganism is a "personal choice." In view of the immense and very real suffering caused by non-vegan choices, veganism is more accurately described as a moral imperative than a "personal choice." That ALL egg production, including so called "cage free" egg production, causes unspeakable suffering to innocent, defenseless birds, and that if you purchase their products you are supporting that suffering, Lisaan, is not a judgment - it is a fact. And what is to be "resented" is the suffering of sentient beings, and those informed individuals who needlessly cause it or needlessly contribute to it. I applaud your abstinance of flesh and your care for animals. I have no doubt that you are well intentioned. For that very reason, I hope that you will research the egg (and dairy?) industries further and then boycott the immense cruelty and suffering which they mass produce every hour. If you have any further questions or would like specific resources, email me. You will find my email address in my profile here. Be well.
  13. Cross posted at the request of animal rights activists. "A Dog Amnesty Targets The Wrong End of the Lead Thursday, 04 January 2007 Recent events that have seen media coverage are now being used by certain organisations to push forward more legislation for dangerous dogs. Say No to B.S.L aims to show that this is not the answer. Talks of amnesties, firstly covering Merseyside, now stated as being National are being stated as an answer in the immediate term. This is a flawed view. Those with innocent friendly dogs will not hand the dogs in simply to be destroyed and neither will those who enjoy the status they believe their dog gives them. Any Amnesty may not run in-line with the 1997 amendment which allows owners whose dogs are seized, to ask the courts to allow their dog to be registered and therefore live. This decision can only be made by a court of law but if your dog is of good nature and you are responsible, is a possibilty. If you sign your dog over under an amnesty you will not get this option. The Kennel club has opposed any amnesty and instead suggested opening the register of exempt dogs (more info here). While the finer points of this need discussion it PROVES there is another way. In 1991 a law was rushed in because people where scared. That law failed and at a price. Lets not make the same mistake again. No breed or type of dog is more likely to attack than any other. Lack of proper training and responsibilty by the owner is much more likely to create a dangerous dog. Unless legislation is followed that deals with the owners who fail to control their dog, regardless of breed, we will never reduce dog attacks. If we, the general public, allow this to continue we may find we are opening up more discussion of adding to the banned breeds. Your breed or type could be next. Say NO to BSL and Dog Amnesties!! " For how to help, please go to : http://www.deednotbreed.org.uk/ Please cross post far and wide at any dog friendly forum, vegan or not, animal rights or not! If we must join forces with cuddlytarians for this one, so be it!!
  14. I just got word that apparently the shelter is claiming that the above info is a "false rumour." I dont know for sure either way as I do not reside anywhere near the location, but I would encourage any member living in the Los Angeles area to make further inquiries and update this thread accordingly.
  15. Taken verbatim from another forum: " 1/1/07 Please be advised that Huntington Beach Humane Society (the 'humane' part is questionable) [i think this is in California???] is closing down for good on January 8 and ALL DOGS MUST BE ADOPTED OR THEY WILL BE EUTHANIZED. The shelter is not publicizing this very well (probably for fear of the bad publicity) so we need to spread the word. Please share this information with other animal lovers in the hopes that more animals will be adopted from there. If nothing else, maybe your help can move them to another humane facility....like in Irvine or San Clemente . The shelter is 'selling' the dogs for 50% off to move them out. PLEASE SAVE THE LIFE OF A PRECIOUS ANIMAL.....THERE'S ONLY 7 DAYS LEFT. Even if you can't have one of your own, just forward this on to everyone you know and have them forward it on....you NEVER know who winds up wanting and getting a dog! I've been surprised numerous times by people who I never thought in a million years would get an animal! If you feel moved, just get in the car and go down there and look - anybody you know need a belated Xmas gift? You just might find your (4 legged) true love there!!! 21632 Newland Street Huntington Beach , CA 92646 Phone: 714-536-8480 Fax: 714-536-4541 http://www.ochumanesociety.com Please pass this on! I know some of you have extensive mailing lists.....no guilt required....just action! Thank you in their behalf. Who's gonna watch out for them if we don't? Please cross post far and wide"
