  1. Another option is hydroxocobalamin injections, from a doctor or DIY. It's just a pin-prick, no need to find veins or anything. You can get the tiny needles + hydroxo at most pharmacies over-the-counter. Then there's no question about will I/won't I absorb B-12.
  2. It's usually just used as a spread. I have seen it in recipes... but they're generally "novelty" sort of junky recipes put out by the company to try to sell more products... Vegemite is becoming a popular condiment and cooking ingredient in Japan apparently. veganza.com
  3. Yup, it is very similar to Vegemite. It's an acquired taste... like natto... veganza.com
  4. Hemp isn't classified as a human-safe food in Australia, so you run the risk of customs swiping your goods on entry to the country... This has never happened to me thus far. I've had plenty of Vega samples arrive safely, and a few other miscellaneous hemp-containing foods. There is some pro-hemp lobbying going on at the moment, though. Google the petitions and sign 'em!
  5. Staring at computer screens gives me bad eyesight. My house is pretty artificial, too. Oh well. . . .
  6. Renee, I'm envious. I've always wanted to see the lush parts of Australia. Hey, just get a baby backback and in a few months, you'll have a tiny hiking partner that will work your quads extra hard. It's funny, because just the other night a hiking buddy and I were laughing about our favorite Appalachian Trail book, "A Walk in the Woods," by Bill Bryson. http://www.amazon.com/Walk-Woods-Rediscovering-Appalachian-Official/dp/0767902521 Go find this book immediately, it is absolutely hysterical. Bill is a professional writer who decided out of the blue to hike the AT. Out of shape, with no gear or skills, he describes his journey from pudgy newspaper columnist to hard body hiker with humor, detail, and little tangents that tell some history about the area. An old buddy whom he hasn't seen in years, Katz, joins him and the guy is like a walking slapstick comedy. If you are outdoorsy, have some hiking experience, and want a good picture of what the AT experience is like, start with this true story account and go from there to maps, guides, and technical manuals. As a matter of fact, I think I'll check this book out of the library again on my next trip and read it for the tenth time. My favorite part of the whole book is when he buys all his brand new gear and sets it up in the basement to practice. He gets in the tent, into his sleeping bag, and lays there, trying to imagine what it will be like to do this every night under trees in the middle of nowhere. Unfortunately, he has just read a book on bear attacks in the wild, so his imagination is getting the best of him in a hilarious way. Also, he's worried about the toothless, inbred hillbillies out there who are just waiting to reinact a few choice scenes from "Deliverance." He fantasizes that he can hear one of them just outside his tent, whispering loudly, "Hey, Virgil, here's another one. Git the rope!" Baby Herc Ha! I read that book years ago, along with a few other of his books. It's what inspired me in the 1st place! I have an Ergo Sport baby carrier. I'll invest in a hiking pack as soon as I adjust to the climate... Tough in the wet season!
  7. Sorry to hear that. She was a lucky kitty, I bet. I lost a lovely 17yo kitty years ago, too. Hard losing a fuzzy family member that's been around shedding light fur on black pants for so long. <3
  8. Just moved to the tropical end of the Outback and I've been out and about seeing incredible scenery and waterfalls and looking at rockclimbing destinations. Currently out-of-commission a bit due to a 4-month-old baby... Swimming almost every day atm. The wet season is HOT. I'd love to hike the Appalachian Trail in the USA!
  9. I've got 2. No spontaneous combustion here, either. I tried vegan prenatal supplements but they made me nauseous. Just took B-12, occasionally omega oil. My iron dropped, but not outside of the "normal" range. My 1st talked at 4 months, the 2nd started moving at 4 months, both off-the-charts for growth due to epic vegan boobs. We make good milk, yo. I suppose I should add - as above, I just ate more, not differently. Wholefoods, raw juices and smoothies and raw desserts. Mainly fruit, veg, and heaps of greens. Some grains and tempeh and tofu and seaweed. I tend towards high-carb, but occasionally stuff my face with high-protein dahl or beans.
  10. Bogan Hyperdome? I've heard of it. I'm in Brisvegas at the moment, but I'll be moving soon-ish... What gym do you use? I've not joined one yet.
  11. The physical world isn't some moral authority and it is not capable of being harmed by going "against" it. It may or may not be in everyone's best interest to feed cats a vegan diet that's synthetically supplemented as necessary, but the observation of their natural diet shouldn't preclude engineering a way around it. True. My 2 kitties have been eating Veganpet biscuits for 5 years, no problems. 5yo male, 10yo female. Both had cat flu when I adopted them from the refuge, it's been latent since they got over it.

Hello! I'm Renée, from south-east Queensland in Australia - I live in both the city and the country, as we're renovating/moving between two places! I've been vegan for 6 years. Easily the most rewarding thing I've done in my life. A month ago I had my 2nd child... and since I got pregnant with him I've been dying to get back to rockclimbing, but my harness wouldn't fit when I was pregnant. So I need to rebuild a whole lot of stomach muscle and upper-body strength. I'm not supposed to do strenuous exercise/"extreme sport" for about a year, they tell me... I bought Robert's book a while ago and loved it! (Especially the message + smiley face he drew with his signature.) Motivated me to do more writing... and now this! If anyone has any post-partum exercise/starter tips, I'd love to hear them. xo
