  1. toor dhal is also called split pigeon peas. its the size of brown lentils, circular, kinda flat, and yellow. There's a picture on this website I found... http://www.users.zetnet.co.uk/ejones/ufdi/topics/dalrec/ddef2.html I know for sure it's available in all indian stores...I think it should also be available at most ethnic food stores.   2. I use Zicam once I start noticing the symptoms or cough drops that have some zinc in them. Studies have shown zinc decreases the duration of colds. I also use ginger in my green tea, or if I have a really bad sore throat I've noticed that chewing on a piece of ginger helps numb the pain-up. Sometimes I make a mixture of: 1 glass soy milk, 1/2 tsp. saffron, 1 1/2 tsp. grated ginger, 1 tsp. turmeric, and a little sugar...heat it up to almost boiling and drink it hot. It'a a variation of an Aurvedic recipe I was taught as a child. Turmeric is supposed to have great anti-septic properties...and in combination with the other ingredients really seems to work well for me. Hope this helps! Take Care, Kris
  3. Spiced Yellow Lentils 1 cup toor dhal 4-5 cups cold water ½ tsp. Turmeric 2 tsp. Salt (or salt to taste) Juice from ½ lime ½ table spoon cumin seeds ½ table spoon mustard seeds ½ table spoon vegetable oil 1 dried red chili pepper- or 1-11/2 tsp crushed red chili flakes ½ onion diced 1 tsp. grated ginger 1 clove garlic, finely chopped 1 Romano tomato diced ½ bunch cilantro 1. Wash dhal in cold water. Then, in a large pot-preferably with a lid- add dhal, water, and turmeric. Allow to ingredients to boil on medium-high heat. Open lid and watch occasionally to ensure that enough water is in pot to allow for boiling. In about 45 min., dhal should be cooked—it should become the consistency of cream of wheat. 2. Add salt 3. In a separate covered pan, heat a portion of the oil on medium heat. Add cumin seeds and mustard seeds. Coat the seeds in the oil. Cover the pan until you hear the popping of the mustard seeds (about 1 1/2 min). Then, turn the heat down to med.-low, and add dried red chili pepper. When chili pepper begins to brown, add entire contents to lentils. 4. With remainder of oil, sauté garlic, ginger and onions. When onions begin to caramelize, add contents to lentils. 5. Finally, add tomatoes, and lime juice to lentils—adjust salt if necessary. 6. Garnish with cilantro * For more heat to the dish, try adding a little bit of red chili powder to the dish. While heating the seeds be careful to cover the pan b/c the mustard seeds will splatter. I find the easiest place to find toor dhal is at an ethnic food store—all Indian stores should carry it. When buying it, choose lentils that are split and preferably not coated in oil. They should look yellow and flat and lentil sized. The amount of water needed to cook the dhal varies. I made the dish yesterday and ended up initially adding one cup dhal to 3 cups water, then after the water boiled down, I ended up having to add a couple of more cups. Once you get the proportion down though, you can freeze the lentils, making the dish fairly quick to make. This is the first time I'm writing down the recipe so if you've got any questions or need any clarrifications please let me know. But this is one of my favorite dishes...you can have it with rice, some tortillas, or as a soup...mm
  4. Your right, stress and hormones can also aggrevate acne. There are many medications that you could consider that don't have extremely bad side effects...like topical antibiotics, for example. So, don't be turned off just b/c the particular med that your cousin takes has such harsh side effects. Your age and history lean towards typical acne, but a doc. would be able to tell you for sure if something else were causing the acne. Oh, the tea leaves I suggested are to be used on the skin, not ingested for their effects. Personally, I've noticed that foods extremely high in calories and fattycan also cause me to break out...mangoes, for example, can do that to me...not like they're ever so abundant around here.   5. Hey Madcat, Just wondering how old you are and if the acne you have is localized to your face or is all over your body. I agree with you that it's probably not detox. which usually wouldn't last 3 yrs. If what you describe is acne, part of what makes people prone to it is genetics, and it's usually not ass. with sunlight, poor hygene, or exersice. The good news is that most people eventually grow out of it. I would suggest however, that you go to your family doc or a dermatologist just to make sure what you have is acne...sometimes what looks like typical acne actually isn't. He can best asscess that by asking you a bunch of questions and examining the "acne" and looking at where it's located. Then, based on his diagnosis you can choose whether you want to opt for his treatment or to do things another way. He should also be able to guide you on places to get naturopathic info. regarding acne. I also agree with compassionategirl in making sure that you are applying things that are non-comedogenic yourself. At any rate, Good Luck and Take Care, Kris
  6. Hi Madcat, You might consider changing the brand of soap your using...also any type of natural astringent may help. If there's a naturopathy store nearby, you might try there for something over the counter, otherwise tea (tea leaves + water) is also a mild natural astringent. There's a brand of soap known as Basis which may help as well...I tried looking on-line for the company's home page, but couldn't find it so I can't tell you if they test on animals or not. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the advise...It's sad, but I have to admit during my 1st year I held my anatomy book to my chest while doing sit-ups...ah, the good ole days Also, I too have come across preceptors during my rotations whose awareness of vegan or even vegetarian nutritional needs have been a little less than admirable. Fortunately, our professor for nutrition was vegetarian and well versed on the concerns facing vegans. I was fortunate in that regard. When do you know you're ready to move on to free weights or machines? Should I be keeping a log of my progress and try to do more repetitions every 3 days or every week? Thanks! Krish
  9. First of, a brief intro: My name is Kris and I'm new to this website. I currently live in Michigan and am in med school... I had some questions with regards to starting a new exercise routine. I go the gym about 5 days a week, but only do about 45 min. of cardio during these trips. I occationally will do a few machines mostly assisted dips, leg press, and a couple of others whose names I do not know. I've always been interested in keeping myself fit, but have recently become interested in increasing my muscle mass. I've had some bad experience with trainers graowing-up, most of whom have told me if I want to increase my muscle mass I'd have to start eating meat. I've been a vegetarian my whole life and have been vegan for the past three years...for ethical and religious reasons, eating meat is not an option for me. I really need some advise on routines to start of with. I browsed the site and got some good tips, but I'm not sure if I should start with free-weights, machines, or with push-ups, sit-ups, etc. before lifting in the gym. Becasuse I intend this to become a life-style modification, I'd like to start of on the right foot to ensure I don't injure myself in the process. If someone could help me in developing a routine that I could accomplish in about an hour a day--I would be greatful. I would also like to keep up with my cardio which usually includes running or using the eliptical machine. I'm so glad I found this site...it's awesome!!
