  1. Hi Pamela! I just want to say "Hi" and "welcome." I'm in pretty much the same boat you are, and understand your frustration. I feel I could do so much more, but don't know how. My only advice (not that I'm an expert, by any means) would be to keep doing what you can. Believe in yourself, and you will get to where you want to go. (I should follow my own advice ... lol.) The people on this forum are very kind, and an offer a lot of insight. Keep going! And if you need a listening ear ... you have it.
  2. Hi Ross! I haven't changed my shoes at all lately ... I have two pair that I switch off between ... one is an older pair, and one's a newer pair. I was wearing the older pair this morning. Now that you mention it, I wouldn't put it past being a psychological thing. My brain is horrible about messing with me. And I was totally thinking about "not falling" the rest of the time I was running ... to the point where I stopped and walked a couple of times ... which I never do! The only other thing I can think is that perhaps my legs were fatigued from my workout yesterday ... but aside from cardio, yesterday was an upper body training day. Perhaps I just need time to adjust to all this newness .... changing a diet and fitness plan all within the same month might do that to a person. Thanks for the input!
  3. Hey everyone. I just have a question for all the more veteran runners/lifters out there. I have to say, I consider myself a pretty seasoned runner. I've trained for and run two half-marathons, and I include regular running as part of a cardio regimen (3 to 4 miles a couple of times a week) ... plus, being a healthy adult, I wouldn't think that falling would be an issue. However, this morning at the gym, it was! I bit the dust twice on the track, sprawling across the lanes with very little grace. A third time, I tripped, but was able to catch myself. Then, I tripped twice (no fall this time, thankfully) while walking my dog. It felt like the tops of my toes would drag, and get caught up on the track, causing the spill. Granted, my ego was bruised more than anything else, but I'm a bit concerned. Could the new weight training regimen I'm doing be changing my form, causing me to place my feet differently? Or is it the change in diet? I've been tracking and I get the recommended gram of protein per kg of bodyweight per day (72g for me) , and I'm consuming about 1600 cals a day, so I don't think I'm shorting myself calorie-wise. Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated. It really has be a bit freaked out, and afraid that I'm going to end up injuring myself ... Thanks!
  4. Welcome John! What an awesome transformation! Keep going, definitely! It's super motivating to see successes like yours for someone like me who's just starting out on this path. Look forward to hearing more from you!
  5. Thanks for the encouragement. I know I have to be patient, and honestly, that's kind of part of the fun, no? I can't wait to see how far I can progress.
  6. Hi Raimondo, and welcome! I must say I'm a bit jealous ... I wish we had enough nature trails near us to be able to spend that much time on them. It must be great. It looks like you do a lot of training, too! Well just wanted to say hello, and welcome aboard!
  7. Hi! Forklift, I can definitely relate to what you're saying, and I'd be totally freaked out too! (I'm very much like stcalico ... I can't stand to be alone in the house at night ... my only consolation is my dog ... I figure if something was really wrong, she'd tell me .... like rick's dobie) When I was younger, I would swear I would hear someone whispering in my ear as I would walk down the hallway on our second floor. I would turn around, and no one was there. Weird. I also had an experience that I feel was my late father reassuring me before I got married. I was upset that he was not able to be at our wedding to give me away, and I had been thinking about that all day. As I lay in bed that night, I felt someone touch my arm. No one was in the room. Now, usually, I'd get totally freaked by this but I wasn't scared at all. Now, I am also a very logical, and totally understand that our brains can be jerks, and play tricks on us .... and that could very well be what happened that night, but I like to believe it was my dad telling me that it was alright, and that he would still be there with us. Anyway ... just my two cents. Let us know what happens!
  8. Hi! I just want to say a huge thank you for this post, Daywalker. Being both new to the vegan lifestyle, and lifting in general, I was looking for parameters on how to cut properly on a vegan diet, and now I have a great reference! (I definitely need to start by losing fat ...) Again, I am totally excited to be starting this new phase of fitness, and I'm glad to have found this board to share with. I only hope I have the patience, determination and perseverance to reach the goals I have set for myself. Sorry, rambling I know ... Thanks again!
  9. Hi Chris, and thanks for the welcome! As of right now, I'm training at a very beginner level. The schedule I have worked out looks something like this: Day 1: 30 minutes of HIIT ... running, cycling, elliptical .... as long as it's cardio. (I actually managed to run 2.93 miles in 30 minutes this morning, due to the intervals I was running ... not exactly lightning speed, but fast for me! Kind of a PR, I guess. ) Cardio is followed by upper body training: Pushups (standard and diamond ... no knees! To failure ... right now I'm at 2 sets of 10 ... low, but again, still good for me personally) Assisted Pull-ups Back row Lat pull-down Bench press Bicep curls Overhead triceps extensions Shoulder press Day 2: 30 minutes of HIIT again Followed by lower body training: Squats Leg press Leg extensions Hamstring curls Cable push-backs (for glutes) Hanging leg raises oblique crunches weighted standard crunches Day 3: REST! And then start all over again, rotating every three days. As far as my protein goes, I'm a fan of tofu, tempeh and seitan at mealtimes ... and then I love almonds and walnuts as snacks. I also bring a serving of Good For Life's RAW protein to the gym with me, for after cardio and before lifting. Right now I've got the Chai flavor ... love it! We live in a suburban area of a pretty big city, so finding vegan fare is relatively easy. There's two health food stores nearby, and there's actually an Asian grocery near my folks that sells sea vegetables and umeboshi plums for a whole lot less than the health food stores around here. So when I go visit (it's about an hour away) I stock up! Anyway, I hope I haven't rambled! Have a fabulous Friday everyone!
  10. Hey everyone! My name's Deb, and I am so excited to be beginning this next phase of my fitness! I have always been really active ... running, biking, swimming, hiking, lifting ... pretty much anything with an "ing" at the end! I love to work out, and that feeling of really killing it at the gym! Oh! And most of the time you'll find me hanging out or walking my four - year - old Golden Retriever (who is pretty much my life). About a month ago, I had decided I had had enough of all the animal abuse and b.s., (I could no longer justify consuming a creature that had once been alive) and I decided to change my diet to a vegan one. My husband, while not on the same boat diet - wise, is super supportive and agrees with all my reasons for my lifestyle change. I will say it's a bit difficult cooking two somewhat different meals every evening, but that's another story for another day. Anyway, I've been doing a little bit of trolling online, and noticed how many super fit vegan women there were, and got inspired! I sat down with my husband (who's taken the ACE certification exam ...) and set up a program, which I began implementing today. I am totally jazzed! That's really all. I just wanted to introduce myself and say "hello" and share my enthusiasm with everyone! Have a great day! Deb
