  1. Thanks for the info Robert, that's good to know! I agree, walking can really burn calories. I lived somewhere in the past without a car, walked for hours a day around town and dropped a lot of weight without even trying. Cool!
  2. Thanks Crash. I pretty much do eat every few hours. Here is an average day for me - 7 AM - Wake Up 8 AM - Breakfast 10 AM - Snack 12 PM - Lunch 2:30 PM - Snack and then dinner would be around 6, but if i working out, I will eat around 8. I think maybe I will just thow another snack in at 4 or 5 instead of dinner. That is interesting about metabolism rising before bed...i never thought of that. Thanks.
  3. Thanks! My workout is mainly lifting and then some cardio. If I eat at 9, I will probably go to bed around 12, so that gives me a few hours at least...
  4. Hello, I was wondering if anyone knows the benefits of incline walking. It is something I have been doing a lot of lately - because it makes me feel great and I believe it is lower impact then running (expecially running on a treadmill). I walk around 3 or 4 miles an hour, at the highest incline my treadmill will go to. I keep my hb around 140. I was suprised how great this feels, so I did a search on google but couldn't find much info/data related to incline walking let alone benefits/cons. One article recommended it but said it may not be easier on the knees, and that was about all I found. Anyway, any experiences or info would be appreciated! Thanks!
  5. Hello, I was wondering if anyone had an opinion on eating dinner late. I work a 9-5 kinda job, so when I get off work I go to work out. This means getting home for dinner around 9. Do you think it is OK to eat so late, or should I stick to something light like a protien shake or does it not matter just eat how much I feel like? I really prefer to eat very early and go to bed on an empty stomach. I have had great success in the past losing/maintaining weight loss this way as well (amongs other things of course!) Thanks!
  6. Thanks Kathryn! To answer your question, I did this type of swimming with interval training generally 3 times per week, and then we had competitions on 2 nights and 2 nights off. All of our work outs with the exception of warm up/cool down were intervals. On competition nights, we had slower warm ups and of course sprints/mid distance for event heats. I would swim maybe 2 or 3 events generally a 50 or 100 meter sprint and a longer 500 meter mid distance. At the same time, my dryland workouts were - lifting (tailored to swim muscles) 4 times per week for 30 minutes and cardio 1 day for 30 mintes. The cardio was generally 2 minute runs/ 1 minute walks. During the pre season, we had these pool work outs 5 days per week, and during the summer I worked out like this 5 days a week, and had competition on the same days. I generally did not lift in the summer season. Gee, that sounds like a lot! Maybe I was over working. I can tell you for sure that i was always tired and ate a TON! i also felt in great shape, allthough i was probably technically over weight. When I stopped swimming so much I dropped a lot of weight and was very lean. I have heard too that swimming is not good for weight loss because of the temp of the water, your body keeps fat to stay warm. All I can say is, when i worked out I would be very hot and got a cool feeling that I think was sweating, allthough it is hard to tell if you are really sweating when in the water, I believe that's what it was. Thanks!
  7. Thanks Daywalker! I thought that was bullshit about the protein too, but I just wanted to check what others thought.
  8. Hello, I am new to the site and have some questions I hope you guys can help me out with! I looked around the forum and saw some related topics (soreness), but wanted to re-address here for specifics. 1) Is it OK to work out (cardio or weights) when still sore? When I say OK, I guess i mean is it counter productive as your muscles still need rest and you are not going to gain as much from a work out when sore? Is it good to stretch when sore? It certainly feels better, but not sure again if my muscles should be resting so they heal properly... 2) Along that line, I have heard many people say that if you are still sore you didn't eat enough protein after your work out. From what i read in the soreness threads, it seems like people were not in agreement with this as I didn't see it mentioned, but wanted to ask specifically. 3) How much protein do you usually eat after a work out? 4) What is a good amount of cardio for fat loss? I have heard from fitness trainers that after about 10 minutes your body adjusts and you will not burn fat anymore. 10 minutes just seems so short, but in the past when I was swimming competitively, I would do interval sprints for 2 hours a day and never lost a pound, so they may be onto something... I would think even if you are slacking, it is better than laying on the couch and will still burn calories. Sorry for all the questions and thank for the help!
  9. Sounds like ChexSystems to me (though probably something different in Europe) I always loved explaining Chex to people when I worked at the bank. I would inform them quite matter-of-factly the chain of events that takes place when we charge off an account, and they would get in my face and tell me to stop threatening them with my BS - then 63 days later when they realize they have no banking priveleges anywhere in the US they call back begging for another chance. Good times. Chex Systems! I used to work for the company that made that product (eFunds) It is an interesting product, and the rest of things they offer are pretty interesting too. What bank did you work for? I work for a bank now, but in the back office (non-branch).
  10. This is your work? Wow, that is amazingly beautiful. Will the show be traveling outside of california? I would love to catch it if it comes to the midwestern US (chicago/clevland).
  11. Thanks Everyone! Finbarrio I am off to look for your doggie pic.
  12. Thanks SeaSiren and Robert! Sports have always been a big part of my life. As a child I also was very active in ballet and gymnastics (since age 2! ) I started tennis at age 8 and played through HS. My partner competed in aikido and judo at a very high level, and also in sailing, canoeing and climbing (he used to live in Boulder) We are active people!
  13. Hello, I am new to the site and very excited about getting fitness/nutrition tips from other vegans. I am 26 years old, and have been vegetarian since age 11. The first few years were a little on and off, but I have not eaten meat at all since age 16. A little over a year ago, I started going vegan. I am still improving on removing all animal products from my life, and feel better and better every day. I am also getting back into lifting/routine fitness. I swam competitively most of my life, and started lifting around age 15 to help with swimming. I lifted consistantly though age 18 and since have been more on/off. I still enjoy swimming, as well as walking, hiking, and yoga. I also picked up on a few of my partner's fav activities - cycling (mountain biking), paddling (we have 2 slalom canoes) and climbing (we just joined a gym with a climbing center - no mountains here). Other things I like to do are camping, cooking, eating, reading, writing, watching movies, photography, and playing with our German Shepherd. I am also a bit of a techie, with an Information Systems degree (allthough I started college focusing on philosophy and photography and went on a photography scholarship). Now I work as a Project Manager in the Financial Servies Industry and live in the Midwestern US. Well, that's my life story! Looking forward to chit-chatting with everyone and getting lots of great information!
