Hey everyone! Im new here! I live in kansas. Im a massage therapist, i enjoy yoga and all those good things! I have really been interested in becoming vegan, or atleast vegetarian. I have tried a few times, and i really felt good while doing it. But i also like to workout. So, after a week or two i always slip back into my old eating habits. Because, i HATE veggies. Lol, especially leafy greens...but on top of that it was hard for me to find what would work for me to workout and have the energy. It is all so overwhelming to me for some reason i can not figure it out!
I would love it if someone could please help me out. Send me a link to a helpful app, or a web page, or even whatever helpful advise you could offer. I feel like a smoker that cant quit. I feel like its just because i dont know all i need to know.

Hey Manbeardog (sweet name!)

Making the switch is not easy! Have you always hated veggies?

I see you joined the forums a while ago, so you obviously WANT to make the change. Perhaps you can slowly progress veggies into your diet. How many veggies do you eat currently?

Take a look in the Recipes forum, hopefully some recipes in there that you would be willing to give a go!

Jub.

Ok I'm still new at this and I was sorta forced into starting a vegan diet. I didn't really want to when I first started (I have since changed my mind on that) and I haven't mastered it yet so I probably shouldn't be giving advice.. lol. I have some free time though so here it goes. Honestly peoples food likes or dislikes very so much I'm not sure that generic advice really helps much when you are trying to change those likes and dislikes regardless of what type of diet you want to be on. So I would think if you really want to make changes but are having trouble finding the right types of foods you want to eat.. then try keeping a diet journal of what you eat and what you like. Then people can offer you suggestions on foods you could use to replace the foods you would like to eliminate from your diet. Then you can find and swap food choices a little at time.

LIke I track my daily diet with an app called myfitnesspal and then when I post in my training log I simply go online and go to my daily food report, hit print button for a cleaner page to copy, and I copy and paste the whole report into my training journal. That way I see and others can see what I eat. SO if there is something I want to change like a food I eat regularly but doesn't fit my diet I can ask people if they have a replacement suggestion.

You also have to stay very open minded. Willing to try foods you may think you want like. I also firmly believe that the longer you eat a certain way the more your body will adapt to the way you eat and the more of certain things you eat the more your body will start to crave and want those foods. You acquire taste for things. Just because you don't like certain foods now doesn't mean you want always not like it. Sometimes it's not always the food but the way it's prepared. Just as an example: I have a son that hates spinach, but loves peach smoothies and it took some convincing to get him to try blending spinach in his peach smoothies but once I did he now loves them. Because in a peach smoothie the flavor of the spinach melds into the peaches. It changes the color but the flavor is still peachy. Once he adapted to the idea that he might actually like spinach we were then able to start adding it to other foods.

As far as the drop in energy levels when you have tried this in the past. That is probably a result of a radical change in diet or calories or unbalanced change. If you adopt changes in your diet at a slower rate that shouldn't happen. Take your time, read and educate your self on the diet and work the changes you need in a realistic pace. Don't except or try over night changes.

...my best advice from an inexperienced, incomplete vegan person. ;)

Hahaha, yeah when used to the salts, fats, and sugars in our typical American diets switching over to eating lots of veggies can be tough because your taste buds won't be too happy about them. I think you'll be surprised how quickly you'll acquire a taste for healthy whole foods if you start eating them regularly and cutting out the junk.

Good luck,

-Dylan

Well... I was just reading a story about someone not liking veggies and interested in being plant strong.
Here is the link to the story. Maybe it will give you some ideas. :)

Just try pushing through it. Your palate will change over time. I like the green vegies a lot more now. I think detoxing your body and your body adjusting to the new diet has a lot to do with they way your tongue percieves the taste. Think of it as nasty tasting medicine. But when you get better, that medicine will taste more like food, because your body will realize that these nutrients are really what it wanted the whole time! This is partially what happened to me at least.

I agree with other posters that your tastes can change over time . . . but there are some sneaky ways to get good things like greens & veggies & fruits into your diet.

Here's one of my favourite "treat" smoothies that doesn't taste at all like you're doing something good for your body:

(1) Sun Warrior chocolate protein powder
(2) Milk substitute of your choice (I use almond)
(3) Frozen blueberries or fresh blueberries + ice
(4) Banana
(5) Handful (or more) of spinach. (Try it first with a small amount of spinach. I guarantee you won't even notice it's there!)

I'm also a big fan of raw veggies with hummus!

also i should say, i dont much like my veggies, atleast not in the way you would have them boiled, and on a side dish

still love my sodium
curries
stir fries
burgers

lots of vegetables/legume action, but much more tasty and carnivore friendly
