 Post subject: Protein requirements!?

How much protein do all of you consume? I know Rober Cheeke recommends quite a bit according to his book, he recommends as much as the typical bodybuilding magazine would recommend. Now, according to guys like Dr. John McDougall who has many books on veganism and also has a nice site and forum, says no more than about 6-7% of your diet from protein....and he says athletes and bodybuilders do not need significantly more. what gives. Who is right? Are any of you gaining lots of muscle if you are getting enough calories and not watching exact protein intake????

I think you should separate religion from researches and official recommendations like RDA...

For me raw foodism(as an example of 6-7% like you say protein diet) is more a religion - it's up to you to believe or not...

You can survive at low protein diet... cause it's not like if you have deficiency you'll die next week...

But you will build lower mass if any, compared to well planned vegan diet...
You can also find it takes longer to recover after intense workout...

I know some people , sit on low protein diet, cause they don't want to build additional muscule mass...

Very often when promoting veganism you will tell to people that, protein deficiency it’s a myth… but yes maybe it’s rare cause there is no visible consicuances of not severe deficiency…
But I think 50% of vegans are deficiency at essential amino-acids…
Just look at the table at the site I gave ya, and you wil understand why I think so

I think it depends exactly how big you are, and how big you want to get. I've not heard of a successful bodybuilder on a low protein diet. I think you can make gains on limited protein, it's just that I think that to even maintain a larger physique you'll need to be eating more.

Do you want a healthy diet, or a healthy diet that also builds muscle? That's the only difference between high protein vegan and regular vegan...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it's all in the genes. All non-essential proteins can be metabolized from simple calories, maybe essential proteins can be made from complex calories aswell; an example could be a cow whose diet consists of a lot of grass, yet it's big and bulky. I assume the same can be applied a man whose DNA prioritizes protein synthesis from molecules outside of amino acids.
