Spring Shape-Up Challenge Results and Voting!

Thank you to everyone who participated in the 2006 Spring Vegan Shape-Up Challenge! We had about 25 people enter, a bunch of people finish the 12-week challenge, and 5 who chose to have their before and after photos voted on for prizes.

We are very proud of everyone who participated, and the before and after photos are very inspiring!

The voting will take place soon, and will be for registered forum members only.

We will have the voting last for 2 weeks to ensure everyone has a chance to vote. There are over $700 in prizes to be awarded and we are pleased to have the support from companies like VeganEssentials, Vega, Sequel Naturals, and Vegan Bodybuilding & Fitness, as well as others who contributed to our challenge.

For those who did not participate, there will be more 12-week body transformation challenges with nearly $1000 in prizes donated by great vegan companies! The Summer Shape-Up Challenge is going on now and more will follow.

Thank you again and enjoy reading the stories and viewing the photos of the accomplished athletes who took the challenge and made tremendous gains in fitness and in health!

The athletes:

K-oz

Goal: My main goal was to lose weight and secondly of course to not lose muscle mass instead of fat, therefore I also wanted to get in shape more and train well, so that a muscle growth can be seen (or at least any muscles). But for that to happen I need to lose fat. (It just kind of goes hand in hand.)

Results: I am in better shape and I did get stronger over all. But the most important: I lost 5 kg (= 11 pounds). I went from 65kg to 60kg (from 143 pounds to 132 pounds) during the contest and truly hope that it can be seen. Actually I believe it can be seen at the belly: it is smaller.

gentduke

Goal: To tone up, shape up, and improve flexibility and overall health and fitness.

Results: I feel great and although I didnt really do so well "on paper", I know I look better and feel better in the flesh.

hmm1219

Starting point: 163 lbs. (I'm 5'3-1/2"); 32% bodyfat.

Goal: I didn't start small. I set my goal to enter my first figure show

the weekend this tranformation contest started. I am achieving that

7/22/06. I set a goal of 20-20lbs./20% bodyfat--whichever came first,

and managed to hit it it 12 weeks. Yay me!

Results: I'm at about 143'ish

lbs./18% bodyfat or so now (not getting on scale this close to show,

might psych me out).

Bigbwii

My actual goal is to get as big as I can, grow muscles and have a good level of fitness at the same time.

This competition will be good for me as I will be able to maintain the level of intensity and motivation I need to give myself a good start.

Goal: To finally get the Tyson Beckford body that I've always wanted but get it as a Fruitarian and to prove that the myth that all Fruitarians are sick and scrawny is just that...a myth.

Results: I lost 15lbs and toned up....success!!!

jjaj2022

Goal: My goal was to lose 20 pounds of fat. My beginning weight was 220 and my ending weight is

now 198.

Results: I'm very happy with what I achieved. I didn't stay totally on track the whole

time but I did reach my goal. I attribute my weight loss mostly to the raw diet that I

started in the beginning of May.

Well done everyone your great inspirations...we are all winners in my book!!!

Hey Rob..I think you Tonya and Brendan should have done the voting....coz this basically comes down to who can get the most friends to vote for them.... and I don't have any

We want to keep it open to the forum members since that is what we said all along.

Since it was a contest organized by forum members, for forum members, I wanted it to be voted on by forum members.

I don't think it will come down to "who has friends." I think people will look at the before and after photos of each athlete, read their quick bio about what their goals were, and then vote.

I actually won't be voting. I'm just awarding the prizes

Agreed.....great job everyone! Again, everyone is a winner, we just want to vote and pass out awards because everyone worked really hard and this voting process and awards was part of the motivation for the athletes.

It will be open for 2 weeks, so plenty of time for people to cast votes.

I hope everyone will base their decison on the goals vs. results, I am and I have it down to two right now and am mulling it over......these things take time you know.

Everyone did so well, it' really hard.

Hey they are some great results.

Bigbwii, abdomen reduced in size a lot, and chest was BLASTED look at the size of it!

hmm1219, excellent job losing weight, you look in healthy condition

jjaj2022, you beat your target by 2lbs, that's great going, roughly a 2lbs a week which is (as far as I know) the healthiest amount to lose per week.

ROCK! I dunno who to vote for

Great job everyone !

Robert, maybe for next competition it could be good to have some posing/photo guidelines? Things like having the same pose, lighting etc in the before and after photos should make it easier to judge progress I think, and make it a fairer competition. Of course I realize this is not a proffesional competition, just trying to give some constructive critique .

I think that's an excellent suggestion. I know the second contest is already up and running, but perhaps on the one following? It definitely helps in seeing the great progress everyone made.

You have already heard this suggested but I also think dated time lines are a good idea such as a newspaper in the first shots. Then there leaves no doubt.

I wanted to reiterate how great everyone did; I know some of you had training journals and some checked in from time to time. It was great to see the progress you made along the way and how you trained.

I agree. It also makes it easier to see changes when the 'before' and 'after' photos are paired up, the way they are with K-oz.

Robert,

speaking about fair competition it might be better if the results of the voting are not visible . You should have a deadline for voting and only after that deadline show the results.

I have voted for Bigbwii, but this is so unfair, because all the others did a great job too.

Thanks for all the ideas everyone. I know these things are never perfect but take a lot of work to organize, promote, etc.

I like a lot of the suggestions and I'll see if it is possible to implement them in future contests.

Some athletes did the photos side by side for me (as in they sent their photos in files that were already placed side by side from a photo program). I don't have time or know-how to do that, so I just put them us as they were sent to me.

I'm not sure how to keep the results hidden as the voting takes place. Perhaps there is a way.

I think we should focus on the positive things about this challenge such as the athletes' progress and the work it took to get so much stuff donated to the winners, and to organize the whole thing

But, they are good suggestions and I will use many of them for sure.

Thanks,

Hey Rob.....

If I remember rightly you can hide the results until the end by either editing the poll section of this post or going into your forum admin...I can't remember which....

Yeah...we live and learn....and I'm sure the next comp will be even better...

Ah it doesn't matter too much, you can't see the result until you vote can you? And even so, you should be voting for who you want to win, so how many votes there already are shouldn't affect your vote in the first plaze

If you are "logged in" you can't see the results until you vote. But if you are "not logged in" you can see the results. But I agree, it doesn't really matter who has been voted for, you will vote for whoever you want based on the bios and photos posted for each person.

I can't hide the results in the regular "edit" part of the post, but perhaps in the admin panel, I can go check. But I don't think it is too big of a deal.

I will not be voting since I am the host/sponsor of the event, but everyone else, feel free to do so.

Great work everyone. These challenges will only get better! I'm trying to always refer to it as a challenge rather than contest because ultimately each person is just trying to improve their own health and fitness. We do the voting because it helps keep people motivated for 12 weeks and rewards them for their hard work.

We must applaud these 5 as well, because they not only finished the challenge, something less than half of the initially 25 were able to do, but they also allowed us to view their before and after photos.

Well done.
