New mike mahler article on vegsource

Recommended Posts

I've done this kind of training, and I believe VeganEssentials has as well. In fact, I think it was Ryan (VeganEssentials) who first introduced me to this program.

It is a great way to get big and strong and I might go back to it soon.

Mike Mahler is a cool guy. He was going to be in my recent movie but had a scheduling issue. So we'll probably get him involved next year in future films.

I've never tried his kettlebell training but I know some of you from here have kettlebells.

How are they working for you?

Mike was also featured in last month's Muscle & Fitness magazine. I think he's been in nearly 100 magazine articles, FAR MORE than I've been in, but I've got a few more coming out in the near future too

Thanks for posting the article Ash.-If you get a chance you should meet up with Michael Hobson later this month in Virginia at the festival.

I've actually got "strength & Bulk training for weightlifters & bodybuilders" by Reg Parks where he puts down his ideas on training.

He advocates full-squats (& full front squats) rather than to parallel. It's a pretty small book really 25 pages in total.

But it covers everything you'd need to get big & strong, if you followed it to the letter (well maybe not the nutrition without some vegan revisions ).

In his book he actually advocated 5 sets total with 2 warm-ups & 3 work sets (or if you are feeling weaker on a particular day 3 warm up & 2 work sets). When you get the 3 sets of 5 add 5lb & start again!

Bit more detail to it than that (or it'd be a very short book ), with advice for varying the routine etc etc, but that's the basics of the routine.

Big compound moves done with 2 warmups 3 work sets, when you get them up it by 5 pounds repeat; eat a lot of good healthy food (include some form of protein supplement & some vit/mins etc). You will grow, impossible not to

yes, mike mahler has recommended whey to his clients. in fact one of his clients has contacted me about refining the diet plan mahler had given him so that it was completely vegan.

I still think mahler is a great guy, and I love his kettleball training idea. (never had a chance to try kettleballs yet)

I think it be cool if he was still vegan.

From what I understand, Mike is vegan. He and I have been in touch for a while now. He's on the main site as well.

Mike was going to be in my recent Vegan Fitness Movie but he had some other scheduling conflicts. I know he does a lot to promote veganism, and has been in nearly 100 magazine articles promoting veganism.

This is the first I've heard about the whey stuff, but I can ask him about it. It sounds like multiple people have run into that, and it's too bad.

I think I'll look into it because that doesn't sound too good if he is suggesting whey for his clients.

Thanks for bringing that concern to the surface.

this is an exerpt from the nutritional plan send to me from one of his clients.

"Breakfast

Start off by squeezing one lemon into a 8oz of filtered water. This is excellent for cleaning out the system and getting rid of excess mucus before eating.

30 grams of protein powder (rice or whey is fine and pea protein isolate is also excellent. you can get that at http://www.vegansolutions.com ) mixed with 8oz of almond milk and 4oz of water (no rice or oat milk in the morning (Too much sugar). Add one tablespoon of Barlean’s Omega Man Organic Oil Add in ½ cup of frozen fruit (I recommend frozen pineapple, mango, or, papaya, strawberries or peaches. I recommend that you rotate fruits daily for variety). Also, add ½ tablespoon of Vitamineral Green.

***Don’t add anything else to the above mix. No Soy yogurt etc.

"

Mahler had assured him that whey was vegan. but his client wanted to double check with me.

Funny that url vegansolutions.com transfers you to garlicboy.com and doesn't even sell protein powders!

Rene, I have no doubt that Mahler would reccomend whey protein. He doesn't really believe in vegan nutrition. A quote from the "vegan diet" section of his own web site:

To be clear, I follow a vegan diet for ethical reasons not because I think that it is a superior diet. If I had access to organic raw milk and organic eggs in which I knew for sure that the cows and chickens were treated well, I would consume milk and eggs.

At the bottom of the "vegan diet" page, he has the following link:

I don't think attacking vegans is very productive. Vegans are a wide range of people and we don't all fit into a perfect mold of a what a vegan ought to be. Attacking someone for not being vegan-enough only deters potential vegans. There are reasons why it took me SO many years to go all the way.

No, but when some omni comes along telling you that even "the great" Mike Mahler doesn't really think a vegan diet is the best from a nutritional standpoint it wouldn't hurt to be prepared. You can now say that, "yes, this is true, but he's just one guy and there are plenty of vegan athletes who are more impressive than him who disagree. He's just more visible because he's trying to make a living as a strength trainer."

I don't think anyone is "attacking" Mike here. It is an appropriate concern that one of the world's best known vegan strength athletes is promoting dairy and eggs!

Yeah, I don't think we're attacking Mike, in fact, as I think I said in all of my posts here, I think he is a really nice guy, it's just good to know that info about him. I had never heard that before.

I also heard some news that Andre 3000 (vegan actor, rapper) wears fur. I didn't know that either.

So it is very surprising to me, and interesting info, but I don't think anyone was attacking Mike, just sharing some details about his public lifestyle.

dictionary definition of whey:

"Main Entry: whey

Pronunciation: 'hwA, 'wA

Function: noun

: the serum or watery part of milk that is separated from the coagulable part or curd especially in the process of making cheese and that is rich in lactose, minerals, and vitamins and contains lactalbumin and traces of fat"

I couldn't find a different definition, they all said it comes from milk. I don't know anything about this guy, but it is misleading to claim that whey is vegan. There are degrees of what people will do in their lifestyle or diet. But clearly, whey is something which most people would agree just isn't vegan, or at a stretch, would say it at least needs to be mentioned that it does come from milk, to let people make up their mind about how strict they are going to be about it, rather than make out like there's no question about it that it is definitely vegan.

The watery part that comes off soya "milk" is not Whey, not technically. Also there is no commerial vegan "whey-like" product, so the point is mote. This subject is "raging" across several boards now (with a lot of the same people

All commerial whey protein isolates are made from milke, so advising someone to eat a whey protein powder is telling them to eat a non-vegan product.

Whether Mike (who seems a clever guy & ok everytime I've ever spoken to him) made a mistake about it, or is mis-informed I don't know.

On he Vegan Fitness list I've said I'd be happy to communicate with him as long as I got permission from the person who got the mail from him to use it (I don't like using quotes from personal stuff without permission). I dont' think it will be a problem unless we all go in gung-ho without finding out the exact details.

It's a shame Mike doesn't believe veganism can be as good, if not better than a meat diet (he ought to talk to Pat Reeves- European Powerlifting champion ) who's kept terminal cancer at bay for more than a decade using raw vegan diet & alternative therapies (the doctors gave her weeks when first diagnosed!). Or the a lot of the older guys that "cured" their bad joints by a change of diet to a vegan style of eating. But, if he believes that, then he should be honest about it. He thinks you can do better with meat, than without, it'll be up to us guys & gals to prove him wrong

my sentiments exactly.

THis guy may be an ethical vegan, but he is clearly not pro-animal rights. The difference between these two things is becoming increasing clear to me as time goes on.
