Ultimate Fighting

Recommended Posts

I know we have a bunch of Ultimate Fighting fans on here so I started this thread to chat about it. I'm not really into it but some of my friends compete and train at my gym. There are some general threads about martial arts or boxing, but this one can be specific to Ultimate Fighting.

Have Fun!

hey thanks for this! i didn't start a thread myself because i didn't think enough ppl knew about it.

so i caught the first show. the tension between shamrock and ortiz is gonna spill over sometime soon i think. but right now i am really looking forward to the rematch between andre arlovski and tim sylvia next week. then after that, the match between royce gracie and matt hughes in may. i can hardly wait for that.

i know there were a few luke cummo fans here. i thought you might like to know i just found out luke cummo won an easy decision over jason von flue last night at the ultimate fight night. you can read about that and the other fights here.

You can bet you bottom that's going to happen before it's over! I noticed it is much more "produced" this round. So I think they will be "put into situations" to help it along.

Me and the wiferoo are big UFC fans. In the pre-show fights last night, I thought Stephan Bonner got a gift win over that Layne Staley-looking dude. Bonner looked very vulnerable.

The Shamrock-Ortiz rivalry is an obvious selling point of the season, but I honestly started feeling like it got to be just slightly foolish during the show. I almost hope they just get it over with next episode and move on. Despite his fighter losing, I think Ortiz seems like a much better coach so far. It's a little old-skool vs new-skool - and it's hard to believe that Shamrock doesn't have a ground-game guy on his coaching staff.

The next UFC is going to be awesome. I think Ortiz is going to kill Forrest Griffin. I don't see that getting past the 1st round. And as humbled as I think Tim Sylvia is after the Mir and Arlovsky losses, and as much as he seems like he is training his butt off for this fight, Arlovsky is a freak. I see him holding the belt for a while longer.

Tito will destroy Forrest because Randy is the only guy with the cardio of Tito, so Forrest's only chance is a KO or TKO, but that isn't going to happen.

I don't think anyone in the UFC is going to be able beat Arlovski maybe some of the Pride guys but probaly not

i have caught a few of the pride showcases over on the FSN channel. i was very impressed with "cro-cop", antonio nogueira, and especially the emelianenko brothers, fedor and aleksander. those two are monsters in the ring. aleksander looks unstoppable right now. in 3 of his last 4 fights, he has knocked out his opponent within 30 seconds of the first round.

in the next ppv, i think arlovsky takes it too. at least that is what i would like to see.

i remember someone here mentioning at the end of this season when the finals are televised live, that the coaches, ortiz and shamrock were going to have a rematch. anyone else heard this?

I'm just wondering with this new season of TUF, since they're doing away with the challenges every week what they're going to do to fill time instead. Usually the challenge filled up like 20 min. or so of the show. These guys seem a bit wilder than last season's cast so they may fill the time with them getting drunk alot and acting like jackasses like with the first season.

yeah i don't much care for the new format either. like we need to see any more footage of them drinking and shaving each other. and yeah, these fighters seem more stupid than i remember the others being. and how are there people on the show who have 10 years MMA experience and others who claim to have less than 6 months.

I don't necessarily dislike the new format, I'm gonna have to wait and see what they actually do.

Hopefully it will end up being 2 fights per episode instead of the challenges.

i dunno... with 2 fights per show it would be a pretty short season. i'm also wondering what they are gonna fill up the time with. i guess we're gonna get to know the fighters real well this season.

i caught the encore of the first show saturday night. answered my own question when i caught the opening i missed the first time. there will definitely be a rematch between ortiz and shamrock at the finale. they are gonna hype this up all season. maybe that's what the extra time will be dedicated to, hype up the finale.

Yeah, building up to a rematch was always the plan going in, and the reason they got Shamrock and Ortiz on as coaches in the first place.

***SPOILERS***

if you dont want to know the results of the ppv don't read below!

evan tanner looked good with his submission win in the first round. could this be the return of evan tanner. don't call it a comeback!

the snowman looked good in his fight, though not as dominant as i expected to be. he won by decision.

i'll be the first to say it, maybe the only one, but i think forrest griffin won that fight. tito dominated the first round no doubt. the second belong to forrest. the third was a toss up. i guess the judges took the last take down as what gave tito the edge. but i feel forrest still won that last round. either way, it was a great fight. great display by both fighters.

and what an upset in the main event! arlovski landed a strong blow that brought sylvia down quick. i thought it was all over when tim went down, but he came back up and landed a good shot against arlovski, then proceeded to ground and pound. then the ref stopped it. and we have a new heavyweight champion. i dont think it should have been stopped though. i wanna say the ref stopped the fight a little too soon. but maybe i am biased because i wanted arloski to win. i am curious to hear what your thoughts are on this fight.

either way you know what this means.... arlovski vs sylvia part 3! i can hear the hype drumming up already!

Tito has a partially torn ACL, an injury which he actually sustained during the filming of TUF3. He kept it hidden until after last night's fight. He's expected to be out a minimum of 3-4 months for recovery, which is going to throw off the rematch between him and Shamrock in July.

i'm glad monson won. he was in a serious car accident within the last few weeks and i'm sure that affected his training. his opponent (Cruz) will be very tough in the future when his stand up improves. jeff was smart to not be over-aggressive on the ground with him.

Tito really impressed me and he definitely won the fight. Griffin landed some shots standing up, but Tito blocked most of them and they didn't do nearly the amount of damage that Tito's power punches did standing up. the ground game was so one-sided that its not even worth elaborationg about. Griffin's take-down defense was pretty good at some points. I guess all that Xyience just wasn't enough though (hahaha).

I thought Arlovski would beat Silvia again, but he made some huge mistakes and his chin is not very strong (he got knocked out by a weak punch from a big dude). I was really getting annoyed about people calling him "unbeatable" and a number of other adjectives that are just gross exagerations. there seemed to be a push to compare him to the likes of Fedor Emilyianko (Pride) and it has no merit to it. Arlovski has 4 loses and Fedor will probably never be defeated (not to mention the much higher quality of fighters in Pride). Arlovski is very athletic, but sometimes he is too quick and explosive for his own good. and the fight definitely should have been stopped. you'll notice Arlovski doesn't even move when the ref pulls Tim off of him.

as for the Ultimate fighter, all i can say is thank god for Tivo. no way i'm watching all those commercials and "real world" garbage. i just fast forward to the training and fighting.

Fedor is a machine, but he's hardly unbeatable. I'm waiting for him to quit dodging and give Crocop a rematch.

Here's the end of the Arlovski fight

I thought the Arlovski-Sylvia fight was properly stopped. Arlovski stopped defending himself - like Mike in TUF 3 episode 1, but without the whimpering. Syliva looked a LOT quicker than he ever has.

I think Tito won that fight, barely. But his making excuses about his knee was a bit annoying. Every one of those guys has injuries, so I didn't want to hear it. I've been liking him as coach on the TUF show, but his whining after the fight that HE WON was pretty annoying. Forrest showed huge heart, iron chin, and great takedown defense. Much props to him.

I don't know. I think a torn ACL is as good an excuse as any to whine. I bet that hurts like a mofo.

Ya, it does hurt - I tore mine completely a few years ago. I just didn't like how Tito seemed to use it as an excuse for a poor performance in a fight he WON. He went into the fight talking smack, then beat Forrest down in the first round. I like Forrest as much as the next guy, but I wanted Tito get back out in the 2nd round and kick some butt. Instead, he coasted to victory, barely, and then whined about how he was injured. I don't buy it. If he simply said at the end that he didn't expect Forrest to be that tough and that his takedown defense was great - I wouldn't have thought twice - instead he whined about injuries and talked smack about how Randy Couture was a traitor. I hate his attitude.

My 2 cents!

If it wasn't for that final take down by Tito in the last round, I totally would have given that fight to Forrest, hands down. Tito could have dominated him on the ground, but he just couldn't get him there, and he didn't bother too much with a stand-up fight because all he was doing was looking to take Forrest down for the most part. Forrest needs more ground training, then I'd love to see a rematch!

And the attitude. Tito just didn't want to give Forrest any credit - he put it out there like he didn't do as good as he might have because of an injury - what about saying Forrest is a good fighter and he looks forward to a rematch? His attitude bugged the sh*t out of me! The whole "boo me all you want, I'm not going anywhere" thing he did was almost gimmicky, it's pretty lame. His UFC bad boy routine makes him sound like just that, the UFC bad LITTLE boy! Then you got Forrest, lost the fight, but is much more gracious - "this was a great opportunity, I love the fans" - now THAT'S a real man!

As for Sylvia and Arlovski, I was so happy to see Sylvia win! He's been through some tough stuff with injuries and getting submitted. Now that he's won, can you smell a rematch? And as a side note, there is no way Arlovski is, what, 6'3"? He's taller than that if Sylvia is 6'8", don't you think?

And how 'bout Stephan Bonner with the commentary? He was a hoot, loved him!
