big rumour in the world of soccer is that David Beckham may play for L.A. in the MLS

I could almost see this happening. He is 31 years old. He and his wife are good friends with Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes. They both seem to love the limelight!!

Could be interesting.

read some quotes in the paper this morning from fans in the UK and Spain.
The best one (worst?) was a UK fan who said
"He's rubbish. And all rubbish goes to the States."
OUCH!

This should create quite a buzz for the MLS.

The only problem I see is that the quality of the league is not very high.
I tried following it last year but how can you watch the MLS after watching the English Premier League??

Hopefully Beckham can bring some star quality to soccer here in the US. It is pathetic here in the US. The MLS doesn't do much to promote itself, and not all states have soccer teams. No sponsers probably? Doesn't take much to get a team together, practice fields, and an arena/or take over a college field. But the turnouts for the games are not enough to even pay for the players salaries, let alone the bus rides (no planes for them). Only LA can afford to pay Beckham! Just the stars alone, who would go to the games, could pay for his salary.
My kids all play soccer cause it was the craze to do when they were young (relatively inexpensive and it seemed every Dad wanted to be a coach). We have gone to some MLS games (Crew mostly) but were bored. We finally saw the World Cup on TV (cable, not the regular TV stations) for the first time was not bored!
Football is still the big sporting event in our high school, but there is a mess of young soccer players coming up the levels in the school. I can see a change over to soccer in the next ten years or so where I live at, at least.

In Canada, soccer registration is now higher than hockey registration!

Our womens team is much stronger than the mens. It will be difficult in Canada to become a world power in men's soccer due to the geography.
It's just not economically viable to have a Canadian pro league because of the travel costs.

I was in Boston this past summer and was overwhelmed at how baseball crazy it was there. I asked about their MLS team and was told that nobody really follows it. Nobody I spoke with had even been to a game.
I didn't even see a t-shirt or jersey in any of the stores.

I imagine we'll see an awful lot of Beckham jerseys around this year.

What he actually means is Posh decided she would try rescue her flagging career by living in LA, so henpecked David transferred to try keep her happy

I think it's for David's benefit as much as for Victoria's.

No top European clubs really wanted him, he didn't really want to play for a lesser Premiership club or maybe any other Prem club apart from Man U.

It's an oppurtunity for him to make even more astronomical amounts of money, but I believe he is sincere in trying to help launch soccer in the US ( although why he should succeed when the likes of Pele and George Best failed is lost on me, when he is not even half the player they were). Sad that so many - not you Tigress - have confused celebrity with ability, but hey if a good looking chap is what it takes to kick-start soccer in the US so be it.....

He has also one eye on his post football career - Hollywood/LA and Posh n Becks are well suited ( welcome to each other in my opinion ). Obviously he will continue to have a successful celebrity career for many years be that in modelling, acting or just being seen at the right parties with the right people.

That his US soccer school is so close to LA Galaxy is also a factor here.

I agree though that the talentless Victoria only clings to fame by association with David these days. I'm not a fan of her either - did you ever see those 'Bored of the Beckham's' tees a few years ago?

No, I didn't see the tshirts. I think in her "la la land mind", she sees herself as the more famous and successful of the two, whereas in reality if they were to divorce that would be the end of her, and I think that is why she clings to him ....

True that Beckham is not a major talent, but it is his celebrity which will make him invaluable to the MLS.
It's creating a huge buzz and putting fans in the seats.
The new MLS franchise in Toronto sold 2000 season tickets the day after the Beckham announcement was made.

You just shake your head sometimes but it WILL be a huge boost to soccer in North America.

Yep, she'd be nothing without him these days, hence why she is still around after the whole Rebecca Loos thing and one or two others (allegedly).

When they first started dating tho, she was the more famous and successful of the two. I think it must be tough for her now to realise that to all intents and purposes she is a nobody without David basically.

She does have rather an inflated view of herself. I don't - most guys I know too - find her attractive at all. Dunno why she regards herself as some kind of style icon either......
