Richard
Yo, I was wondering, is the microwave worse for your food than cooking? I understand that many foods are damaged by cooking them, but is microwaving even worse than that? Are there any specific things about microwaving that I should worry about? sinisterkungfu
Aside from the food tasting like crap? http://www.mercola.com/article/microwave/hazards.htm http://www.mindfully.org/Food/Irradiate-Microwave-Effects-FoodMay96.htm http://www.healthfree.com/paa0068.htm http://www.relfe.com/microwave.html I don't know how valid any of these sources are from a scientific standpoint though. Richard
Thanks for the info. I currently use microwave to reheat rice, which I have cooked a large amount of then reheat it in small portions to eat. It tastes fine to me, but I have been concerned for a long time, because microwaves do seem weird... uhm and just something tells me they're bad news, that food shouldn't be altered in that way
willpeavy
If you cook food in the microwave for a long time (I think 10+ minutes?), it can do some minor damage to some of the nutrients.
Richard
I put rice in for 1 minute. I am still concered, but I dunno if my concern is irrational or not. Have to read all those links that Big Sizzle posted
dietcoke
I hope it's alright! I love the micro-nuker. Really, during the winter ALL my meals are cooked in it. I don't know what I would do if I had to wait more than 2 minutes 23 seconds (exact!) to eat my oatmeal.
Nakeddragon
Another thing to consider is the use of plastic containers in the microwave... http://www.jhsph.edu/publichealthnews/articles/halden_plastics.html
Kathryn
Another thing to consider is the use of plastic containers in the microwave... Definitely something to avod. I never use plastic in the microwave. There are some that say that microwaving changes the structure of foods to the point of making them 'dead.' They are so convenient, though! A yam takes 7-8 minutes in the microwave, and close to an hour in the oven.
9nines
http://www.mercola.com/article/microwave/hazards.htm I am not sure if Mercola is a reliable source on health. Mercola states you have to eat meat for good health and that cholesterol above 250 is good. Here are some stuff on his websites: Vegetarianism is unnatural. This is not a modern finding. The Bible gives us evidence of this, and clues that vegetarianism was not regarded with favor. In Genesis , Chapter Four, Eve bears Cain and Abel. 'And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.' That 'but' in the middle of the sentence is the first clue to disapproval. This disapproval is confirmed by verses three to five. Abel and Cain bring offerings to God: Abel of his sheep and Cain, the fruits of the ground. God, we are told, had respect for Abel's carnivorous offering, but He had no respect for Cain's vegetarian one.

9nines
Mercola makes some wild stretches on diets. Read below. Note: Sorry if this seems that I am criticizing your post (I am not) and sorry for hijacking the thread but I wanted to share: Vegetarianism And Militancy Have you noticed the increasing numbers of occasions when small groups of very militant people demonstrate against all sorts of things: animal experiments, butchers' shops, new roads, footpaths, nuclear power stations, civil rights, homosexuals' rights or anybody else's rights. The odds are that the majority are vegetarians. As we know, when it needs food, our body indicates this to us with the feeling of hunger. But there are also other signals if specific nutrients are deficient. Meat is the best source of several nutrients. When our bodies are deficient in these, we become irritable and aggressive. This is a perfectly natural signal built into our genetic make-up over our evolution: our bodies are telling us to go out and kill something to eat. This is why strict vegetarians tend to be so vociferous. It is a trait that was recognized long ago; it was, after all, the vegetarian Cain who killed the carnivorous Abel, not the other way round. The vegan Kikuyu tribe in Kenya were the perpetrators of the murderous Mau Mau in the 1950s, not their wholly carnivorous, but peaceful, neighbors, the Maasai. And, of course, it is no secret that Hitler was a vegetarian. Have you ever heard of a meat eater bombing a greengrocer's shop? Where there is dissension in our society, it is noticeable that the silent majority tends to be the meat eaters, the vociferous minority, vegetarian - no matter what the protest is about. He doesn't even know how to say what he means! So's HE'S the one saying strict vegetarians are "vociferous." He sounds pretty "vociferous" to me. (Ghandi, "vociferous"? I think not). I think the "vociferous" veggies he's met are just reacting to him! And my body never told me to go out and kill sumthin' (maybe a bahr!) to eat.
