I never eat at restaurants, except an Asian vegan one, once a month (I can not go there because it is about 10 miles away and I rode a commuter bus to work.) I worked-out pretty hard yesterday evening, so I am very hungry. I might go to Café Express and get black bean soup and side vegetables but ordering that way is al carte, so fairly expensive and it is not really that much food. There is a Cajun restaurant that has vegetarian red beans and rice but I am not sure I trust them plus it is white rice. I work downtown, in Houston (anyone have specific suggestions for it) or general suggestions (there are the normal fast food, sandwich shops etc. ) Thanks. I used to eat a vegetable sandwich and black bean soup at Cafe Express but a manager told me the bread provider changed and the new bread has eggs and milk in it. There are not too many vegetables (fennel, spinach and carrots, with humus to be much calories without the bread, so I do not ant to get it and jus not eat the bread.) I might take a bus to a vegetarian restaurant but it would take probably an hour half to two hours so might get into trouble being gone so long. Kathryn Posted February 3, 2006 Share Posted February 3, 2006 I'd trust the beans and rice in a veggie restaurant more than the black bean soup (unless you are sure there is no beef broth in it, for example). In a pinch, I'd go to a grocery store, pick up some hummus, whole grain pita and/or raw sliced veggies (pre-sliced), an apple, some p.b., some nuts, things like that. I keep a stock of Vega bars in my office that work nicely as a light meal in cases like this. Then I just make my next meal a bit bigger. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Does pizza crust normally have egg or diary in it? I found a restaurant with vegetable pizza (has feta cheese standard but I will ask for it not with that.) I called and the restaurant said the crust has no egg or diary in it. I never thought about it before but being a flat bread I guess diary and eggs are not normally in pizza crust. Anyone know? Really, you have to ask about everything.I'm still surprised even now after 10 years that simple plain things you buy at the store that you would think are okay contain something ridiculous Baked potatoes are always reliable, and salsa on top is usually good. I went. I ordered and the waiter said, "oh you are the one that called." I answered politely, "yes" and I politely asked, "with the feta not on mine, is there anything else a strict vegetarian would not eat on it." He smiled and said, "vegan? Yes it would be totally vegan then." It came. It was good but small. Then after eating about one fourth of it, I noticed it had some yellowish-white strands about one centimeter long, melting. It was sparse amounts but was on all the toppings. I did not say anything and being hungry and it being so little, I ate it. The restaurant was not very busy; it was early, so I see no excuse for what happened to have happened. I understand the staff actually cooking the food is just following the orders but if I phoned about ingredients and then iterated my questions to the waiter who used the word 'vegan' on his own, why can the waiter not tell the staff not to add the cheese (again, the restaurant was not busy.) The menu did not state any parmesan or mozzarella cheese was on the pizza, so there is no way I could have known. The waiter should know the food. Or am I completely wrong assuming it was cheese. Is there something else with that description (thin, short, whitish strands that melt?) Sorry for the rants but I wanted to express myself.
