Cholesterol

Someone on another forum I go to was told by her doctor that humans need to get 200 mg. of cholesterol in their diet.

I know this is BS, but where did this info come from? Any clue? Maybe the doctor (who like most allopathic physicians, knows not much about nutrition) confused a need for 200 mg. per day CREATED BY OUR OWN LIVERS with a dietary need for it.

Also, he told her that chicken is fine if the fat is cut off. Am I misremembering, or isn't cholesterol in the flesh of an animal as well as in the fat? (I distinctly recall reading that a chicken breast has about the same amount of cholesterol as beef).

(Yes, I could look these things up in one of my many reference books... but I have other things to do!)

I have no idea... it is BS!

You are right, cholesterol is in the flesh as well as in the fat. From a nutritional point of view, you get less saturated fatty acids when you cut of the fat, which is better for your cholesterol level.

The best way is not to eat any dead animals.

What many do not realize is that chicken has the same or more cholesterol than red meat.

For example,

Low fat chicken breast has 119 mg of cholesterol per a serving of 231 calories. That is .52 mg of cholesterol per calorie.

A all fat trimmed rib eye has 259 mg of cholesterol per a serving of 576 calories. That is .45 mg of cholesterol per calorie.

In the China Study, three world prominent cardiologists stated they have never heard of a heart attack in someone with a cholesterol level below 150 (forgot unit of measurement but the popular one quoted in health fairs etc. mg per liter maybe.) Yer common doctors say there is nothing wrong with increaing cholestterol by eating it

I think I found another clue as to how this doctor has misiinterpreted things. Someone mentioned that humans should keep their daily intake of cholesterol below 200 gms. Now, what if this bozo, misrememberiing his sparse nutritional teachings, takes that as meaning one NEEDS to have 200 gms of cholesterol in the diet? Scary thought, that people like this are seen by many as the guardians of our health! (That's why I think we should all take personal responsibility for our own health.)

Wonder if he also recommends eating the maximum suggested amount of other stuff that's bad for you? Like saturated fat? Or sodium? Or transfats (since the 'safe recommended amount' according to many is "0" in this case, he probably wouldn't do too much harm to his patients there!).

Absolutlely true. Consider that the vast majority of professionals in the medical field who are not strictly dieticians or nutritionists, (but do dispense human nutrition information when questioned) usually have had little or no classroom exposure to diet and disease prevention.

I had a pediatrician once for my 3 year old that I would have heated discussions over concerning his diet--finally had to switch to another doctor. The ignorance (and brainwashing courtesy of the milk/meat industries) of many health practitioners is truly both appaling and, from a global perspective, embarrassing.

if a doctor said it well then you'd better take it as gospel...right, ok sure thing. For sure you do need cholesterol but not necessarily from external sources. Your liver manufactures it from saturated fats and makes digestive enzymes out of it as well as androgens/estrogens. It's a good idea to have some coconut oil if you are vegan, I love the stuff - it's all I use anymore. Just make sure it is expeller pressed and organic if you can find it.
