Ravi
With about 7 weeks to go in the Summer Shape up challenge, I'm realizing that I've got quite a way to go to reach my bodyweight goal. Having been on a mostly raw diet has helped my clean out on the inside, and drop some weight, but now is the time to start gaining! What is your favorite vegan food for gaining lean mass? Mine is quinoa (the grain).
Odidnetne
Well, I'm pretty sure it's lean mass I put on with it, but it's pretty high in calories, and it's a bowl of oatmeal with raisins, natural peanut butter and soymilk (optional, I often just drink the soymilk with it). Homemade Lentil Soup is another good choice (and personal favorite).

Guest
I ran into trouble losing weight in the winter when I started eating large bean soups...the goal was to decrease calories while increasing consumption for mental reasons but it didn't work which makes me believe it kept my mass on well when I was trying to lose it so beans are key. oregonisaac
What is your favorite vegan food for gaining lean mass? Mine is quinoa (the grain). I am trying raw quinoa (soaked overnight per veganpotter's instructions) for the first time right now at work, pretty good w/ hab. peppers and chard, but was I supposed to refrigerate it? Had some odd foam on it... Raw lentils will be my lunch tomorrow! I think I will refrigerate this time...

Guest
Make sure you drain and wash...those bubbles are gasses being given off from bacteria...its harmless but it tastes better when you wash it first.

Yeah...I should have read this yesterday...I choked down about half the bowl before giving up and eating a vega bar. Had a really wierd taste. Oh well, now I can look forward to it being better next time! How long do you soak lentils? Same deal with the washing? Should I refrigerate? Kathryn
Be sure to rinse quinoa many times before soaking. It is coated with a foul-tasting saponin (bitter substance that protects it from insects). Also, quinoa, being so small, just needs to be soaked about 4-6 hours. Then let it begin to sprout for a short time. For lentils, soak overnight, then rinse 2-3 times a day (more rinsing is required in hot weather). Sprout for about 2 days. Several sprout 'gurus' don't recommend eating raw beans or legume sprouts, at least not in much quantity (and lentils may be better than most) because they can cause digestive upset. Steaming them for 10-15 minutes might be a good idea.
Guest
I just wash everything together and soak and rinse them together. I never really put the time into sprouting although I'd like to. After the soaking I do refrigerate it but I don't think I need to because I only soak what I would eat in two days.

Guest
I think if you only eat bowls of vega powder and nothing else(no water) you'll loose all the extra water in your muscles and be the leanest being on earth...who cares how long you'll live...you'll be really lean and cut

Guest
Its sad...I left Richmond at 195 and after the 4th or 5th day I weighted in at 216...sounds impossible but its true. Now I'm probably around 208 but I don't want to way myself for a while just to be safe...probably wait until after my greens cleansing. I'm only eating raw greens for 4 days...i'll probably lose 10 pounds or just have impacted bowels from all the damn fiber...in time all the fat will be gone and I can lift and ride again(I'm waiting for the mail to drop my bike off) without feeling terribly bloated.
