New to DC

Hi all. A quick hello. 52, 190lbs, vegetarian for 34 years, vegan for 14 and still benching 300lbs. Just moved to DC from France after 21 years there. It wasn't easy being vegan in France: difficult to find proteins, too many carbs, butter in everything and in restaurants, you wondered if they had gone to the back room to call the cops. In Belgium I actually got kicked out of a restaurant by a lady who refused to serve someone who did not appreciate her meat. Admittedly, being in DC now is great. Lots of great vegan products and restaurants. I'm loving it.

I look forward to comparing notes with others who've been been on the same life journey.

Vegan Resources in the Washington D.C. Metropolitan Area

There is a great list, over 10 years old, for vegans and vegetarians in the area to network about what is local, cool, and veg*n. This list is unaffiliated

with vegdc.com

Compassion Over Killing

COK puts a great veg*n restuarant and veg*n resource guide for the DC Metro area:

http://www.vegdc.com/

COK also organizes a lot of volunteer activities to promote veganism that are a great way to have fun and meet area vegans:

http://www.cok.net

The Vegetarian Society Of The District Of Columbia has some nice non-political events some times:

They advertise many of their events through this meetup.com group:

Poplar Springs Animal Sanctuary

Local animal sanctuary that takes volunteers to help care for the rescued former livestock animals. Horses, cows, pigs, chickens, turkeys, goats etc. It is a quick drive but in a nice, quiet rural area. They do a few events a year

Open The Cages Alliance

also does cool stuff and is run by high energy, positive, grass roots people:

Glut is a 100% vegetarian workers collective / natural food store:

Welcome to the group! Great intro. Love the fact that you're still benching 300lbs! (and the fact that you got kicked out of a restaurant, that is pretty cool for taking that stand).

We're happy to have you here! DC is a great place to be vegan. I usually visit once or twice a year and it's just a wonderful city in general.

All the best and welcome aboard!
