Well, I'm not an expert, but to cut weight you need to expend more calories than you consume. Simple math. So the key is a hipocaloric diet for an extended period(until you are satisfied with your body fat), but by doing this you will lose some lean mass also. That means that a good workout would be something that you enjoy doing and can manage to do lots of it in order to burn more calories.
Personally I enjoyed training martial arts(wing chun and hung gar kung fu) when I was a teenager. That burned calories like hell and it was fun, highly recomended =)
