Daniela, MF, Others in Brazil - I was considering taking up on an invite to stay in Brazil for 2/3 months at a friends house.

I hear Brazil is expensive (as expensive as US.. since I am no longer earning in Dollars). Are there any inexpensive Grains/ Lentils/ Pulses options?

How difficult is it to get some Indian spices?

Hei my friend.

Sorry for delay in answer... been very busy those days.

You have a lot of veggies here and they are cheap. The season ones are even cheaper.

But, tell me, where are u planning to stay?

I live in the South East and this is the most expensive part of the country.

Cheers

Daniela

I have an invite to stay in Bahia and unlike when I had a US dollar paycheck. Indian rupee is kinda low.

I heard SP is damn expensive - More expensive than NYC for food, etc etc. And the BR currency is also expensive.

I am guessing the same wont apply to Bahia etc?

Is it possible to get similar low price veg stuff (lentils, chick peas, kidney beans, mung beans / sprouts, veggies) in SP?

I'm from Brazil,

About your questions:

- Are there any inexpensive Grains/ Lentils/ Pulses options?

Yes, grains, lentils, pulses are generally cheap. Plenty of options. Vegetables and food are cheap here, but he have the most expensive computers, cars and electronics in the world.

- How difficult is it to get some Indian spices?

Which spices? It is easy to find curry, paprika, cinnamon, cloves, mustard, tumeric...

Any other questions about Brazil? =)

Nice. I did see how iPhones were so expensive there - Major import duty..

Since you responded with such detailed valuable information - I'm gonna go detailed

Are these Indian spices you listed above - imported or locally grown? Prices?

How about Hing (Asafoetida), Cumin Seeds & Powder, Coriander Power, Red Chilli powder?

Amchur (Dried mango powder?

Gonna get the details and get back to you asap =)

Bahia is not as expensive as SP, for sure. But SP has lots of vegan restaurants and stuff.

Hing = RARE, you cant find it online, but expensive -> http://www.bombayherbsspices.com.br/ about U$30,00 for 50g

Cumin Seeds & Powder = You can find it everywhere cheap, we call it Cominho

Coriander Powder = You can find it everywhere cheap, we call it Coentro

Red Chilli = Really don't know, we use black pepper powder a lot, but chilli not so much.

Amchur = RARE. you cant find it online and not so expensive -> http://www.bombayherbsspices.com.br/ about U$8,00 for a small flask

I'll get the prices as soon as I go to the supermarket.

Hing 50g - U$30.00 - Only found online

Amchur (About 30g) - U$8,00 Only found online

Cumin Seeds & Powder (Cominho) 60g - U$ 2.50

Coriander Powder(Coentro) 35g - U$ 3.50

Lentils 500g - U$ 4,00

Chick peas 500g - U$5,00

Kidney beans 500g - U$4,00

Mung beans, never found mung beans, just sprouts.

Mung beans Sprouts 250g - U$2,00

Veggies are cheap,

Tomatoes in their highest price were U$4,00 per 1 KG.

100g of kale is usually U$1,50

If you want more prices or information just ask.

Bear in mind that I live in the extreme SOUTH of brazil, Bahia is in the extreme north, but prices should be pretty similar or even cheaper.

You rock! Looks like a bunch of them are available and a few I am thinking of carrying with me . Now I hope things fall in place.

PS: Did I say you rock and roll

Hi there

The main rule here is: you can have anything anytime IF you have the money to pay.

never been to Bahia. I am from South East.

  • 2 weeks later...

I have been out for a long time due job. I really have a lot of things to do and I am really overweight. Never been so big. I am at 78,5 kg right now, around 31% of body fat, being 173 cm high. I know it's a lot, but It's all my fall. I've been overeaten all this time and now I am at the ground zero, as we say here in Brazil.

Anyway, it doesn't work to complain. I now have such a big work to do: got to down 10 kg. and I want to do it in parts.

1) First goal will be set to June 30th: I want to be around 73 kg.

2) Second goal: August 1st: 70 kg

3) Third goal: August 30th: 68 kg

* Please, tell me if it's reasonable.

One thing for all: keeping a positive mind will help me a lot and keeping this log here.

I really need your support, my friends.

Today at the gym:

leg training. exercise sets x reps x weight

- medicine ball squats 4 x 30 bw

- leg presses 4 x 20 x 40/40 kg

- leg extensions 4 x 20 x 32 kg

- hamstrings curls 4 x 15 x 36 kg

- glutes cable rows 4 x 15 x 25 kg

- abs crunches 4 x 40 x 5 kg

- abs planks - 4 x 1 minute x bw

Diet: Following a very low carb on this very first phase, for cutting.

Estimated totals:

calories: around 1000, with 23 grams of carbs; 14 of fat; 111 of protein; 4 of sugar and 1,723 of sodium.

Thanks a lot my friends.

All the best

losing 5kg in one month is not a good idea, achievable, but not a good idea.

I would try to lose 3kg in the first month, 4kg tops.

Going low carb is another bad idea, since you need to have energy to train hard. Going so low on carbs will demotivate you and most probably ruin your workouts. You also need more fat than 14g a day. Try to eat more carbs, more fat and less protein. Also something like 1300 calores is a better start (1000 calories is to low for anyone).

I'll try to reach 5 kg goal this month. This diet really works for me and motivates me.

I really need those amount of protein intake. If I take less... you know, even after 5 years as a vegan, I miss meat. I went vegan for ethical reasons, not health.

I gain weight very easily, so got to be radical sometimes.

cheers
