SOY, Dangerous or not?

#1 Postby Badgerman » Mon Sep 23, 2013 2:37 pm

Hi,

There is always at least two opinions on most subjects so I thought I would ask the forum what their views are on soy. Having studied nutritional healing I wanted to offer an alternate viewpoint that you should eat soy if you are a veggie body builder.

http://wakeup-world.com/2012/05/21/http ... -soy-html/

I don't want to create a storm here but after reading one guys diet plan which included 3 blocks of tofu and soy cheese in one day I thought maybe people thought this was normal practice.

Cheers

Nathan

all i know is
it tastes good
i eat lots of soy
i don't have gyno

as far as i'm concerned, no other non-dairy milk tastes any good, nothing comes close to tofu/bean curd, aswell as many soy products being enriched with stuff that's kinda hard to get, like calcium, and b vitamins

i really havent taken the trouble to become informed about soy, simply because it's hard to wade through the bullshit, uninformed opinions and propaganda

i wouldn't use soy protein powder myself though, that stuff is nasty

bottom line is
i remain ignorant for now, and keep using soy, if i ever do research on it in the future, and find it to be bad for my health, i expect i'll cold turkey it like every animal product i've given up in the past (when i went from vegetarian to vegan)

My own thoughts based on my research into it:

Soy is a bean. Beans are fine. Soy is fine - edamame, tofu, tempeh, miso. If you have concerns about GMO then stick with organic soy.

Isolated soy protein is NOT good for you . It is found in some protein powders and some fake meats and It is as bad, if not worse for you than meat or dairy - ie it elevates IGF1 levels which are linked to cancer growth. Most studies saying soy is 'bad' were done with isolated soy protein.

Dr Greger suggests limiting soy intake to less than 3-5 servings a day. I personally believe that's too much and that a person should not rely too much on any one food. Variety is best.
If it's important to you, you'll find a way. If it isn't, you'll find an excuse.

I have no concerns with it TBH.

I eat/drink it now and then and have never had any concerns or issues with it. I think consuming it in large quantities probably isn't great, but that can be applied to a lot of foods. There are a lot worse foods we could be consuming than soy IMHO.

Interesting feedback, I agree in moderation some not so good for you food is ok if eaten with the right mindset. Never feel guilty eating food as that has so many negative reactions in the body.

Soy is a bean but it is so highly processed that you aren't left with a bean in the end. Each to their own I was just interested in the general viewpoint of the forum. Thanks.

I was eating 2-3 bricks of tofu a day for years. I developed gyno on one side months ago. I went tofu free for a month and the pain and lump went away. Will never touch it again.

Only dangerous if it's all you eat. I'll have it sometimes although it's usually a lazy substitute to all the other great foods available out there.

Man, that is a lot of soy to be consuming if you were having it every single day!

I think as part of a varied diet it's a great food!
Over here in China, I've tasted super-fresh soy milk, all organic.
You can see some of the scenery of my mother-in-law's village here: http://www.youdolife.com/2013/08/bear-g ... ility.html
It's a farming community in the mountains: they have many kinds of organic food there. It's pretty much my dream being there! Orange trees, bayberry trees, peach trees, and loads of other crops, including corn, sweet potatoes and the "big bean", the soya bean.
During the summer, there's one lady in the village who collects the beans, washes them in the nearby stream, then dries them in the sun before making a kind of powder. Then she uses the powdered bean to make fresh soymilk which she shares with the other villagers!

I am allergic to soy and soy products (get itchy hives). Just tried eating some crackers that had no soy/ products listed but it said the crackers were produced in a factory that produces soy/ products. I was thinking that certainly they must clean the machines between soy and nonsoy products. Wrong! Within a few minutes after eating 2 crackers hives appeared. Thankfully I have capsules from my chiro that act quickly as an antidote.
