Looking for Guidance

So I recently joined a gym with my husband and everything was going fine until the trainer learned we were vegetarian. ( we're working on vegan) She told us that we wouldn't lose weight quickly or gain any muscle since we don't consume animal protein and that animal protein is best. She also told my husband that as long as he continues to eat tofu he will never gain muscle. I know that large amounts of soy isn't great ( large amounts of anything isn't) but like seriously we eat tofu like once a week. Sheesh. Anyway what can we do?

You can easily ignore all nutrition advide this trainer is giving to you both.

Tofu is great for muscle growth and so is vegetable protein, no difference from animal protein.

The best advice I can give you is to read the main site, there you will find some guides on what Derek Tresize eats and recomends.

If you don`t know Derek is the vegan guy from this pic:

Some of the best articles to start with would be:

http://www.veganbodybuilding.com/?page=article_marcella_003

http://www.veganbodybuilding.com/?page=article_derek_gainer_shake

http://www.veganbodybuilding.com/?page=article_shorkey_top_ten_foods

If I am not mistaken you can also get some paid online personal training at: http://www.veganproteins.com/personal-training/ or http://www.veganmuscleandfitness.com/client-portal/

If you can afford it =)

Good Luck and don`t be afraid to go vegan, you will still have massive gains in the gym!

Thanks a bunch. I wish we could afford the training but our budget is so tight (we only make 1200 a month and that's 2 incomes!) I know that the only things vegans miss out on is b-12 and even then there are vitamins for it I wanted to yell at her for her meaty ignorance lol I'll send those links to my husband since he's the one that wants to bulk up

Hi and another welcome to the community here! Tofu or no tofu you can grow your muscles off a plant based diet no question. That trainer has no scientific data to back up any of that ridiculousness.

Glad you found our website, hope you find it helpful. Looks like Maybenot alreay jumped in with some good info.

Cheers,

like lots of mis-informed, I'd say said traininer is just repeating the sterotypical garbage, not maliciously, just out of ignorence.

Like others suggested, start with the web for info, don't believe stuff just because you read one place one time. Especially if linked in to trying to get you to buy something. Like the Buddha said, don't just accept and believe something because I said it, or someone else, or you read it somewhere. double check. enquire. TRY and see if it works for you or not. Diet and exercise (in my opinion) isn't as simple as a one-size/approach-fits-all.

Lots of good reads out there too (and not to pricey on amazon.com) given your budget. Enough of a variety of enthusiasts here who could help you guys figure out a regime to achieve your goals and be plant based at the same time. Whatever your need, lose weight, bulk up, get ripped, run a marathon, etc. probably someone on here is into the same things and many of us might have random offerings or ideas.
