Vegan and vegetarian bodybuilders?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys! I've been looking at pictures on this site and I wanted to ask this question, is there much of a difference in the build of Vegan and vegetarian bodybuilders? it seems to me that vegetarians seem to have more mass, this would knda make sense as veggies would have more access to diary! let me know what you guys think! I don't think there is a major difference at all. I think the difference comes from the sheer numbers of vegetarians outnumbering vegans. Also the fact that the vegetarian bodybuilder most people are thinking of is Big Ben Schosha who has amazing genetics and has been bodybuilding and powerlifting for 17 years. Big Ben is actually mostly vegan as well. I believe whey protein is about the only thing he takes in that is non-vegan.

I get this question a lot. People say the same about bodybuilders who eat meat vs. vegan bodybuilders. The ones who eat meat are so much bigger. For one, there are not that many vegans on a global scale, and bodybuilding is a truly unique sport. So the combination of a vegan who is also a bodybuilder is very rare. Bodybuilding isn't very popular worldwide compared to other sports, hobbies and games, and most who participate are non-vegan, mainly because historically bodybuilders ate tons of meat, and that is what they continue to do today.

I have no doubt a person who is vegan, vegetarian or non-vegan could look the same as any other bodybuilder IF THEY HAVE THE RIGHT GENETICS AND PUT IN ENOUGH TIME. Bodybuilding takes years. For example Ben, who is the huge guy on this site and has some recent photos in the image galleries, used to be a small guy. He was a soccer player for about 10 years I think. Then he got into lifting and it has taken him 17 years to get where he was.

When I started bodybuilding I was 157 pounds and I got up to just about 200 pounds in 3-5 years. Bottom line, is that it takes time, dedication, the right attitude and pretty good genetics and you can go pretty far.

Topher and I used to be soccer players and endurance athletes. Now we're throwing arond 100-lb dumbells because we stuck with it.

A vegan should be able to achieve just as much as a non-vegan, there just aren't as many of us so you don't get to see as many examples of large vegans........but we're discovering more and more everyday. Just like the ones we've mentioned like Kalani and Ryan who can bench 400 pounds (Kalani) and Squat 500 pounds (Ryan) and are just BIG dudes, both over 250 pounds.

Michael Hobson, Jonathan, CollegeB, Alex, and many others are also getting bigger and bigger all the time, so soon we will have more and more faces and bodies to look at as large vegans.

Hope that helps a bit, there are many factors involved with getting "BIG" but being VEGAN should not slow anyone down. In fact, it should help make you bigger, better and healthier.

Hey rob didnt we post about veggie bodybuilders of the past. Brenarr MacFadden is a name i've seen in a veggie history book but a website (http://www.bernarrmacfadden.com) said he also did have some meat in his diet. Brenarr did found phsyical culture...http://www.physicalculture.us/ , but as a magazine first. Bill Pearl (http://ksteveh.tripod.com/pearl.html). I also think...Andreas Kahling.

Also I just found this link in my bookmarks, maybe have some of these folks over to the boards....
