  1. How do I calculate calories burned for weightlifting exercises?
  2. Robert Cheeke, I want to thank you for Shred It. I have been eating a whole foods plant based diet for about 2.5 years. I’m 53 years old and I’ve lost around 80 lbs and have gotten rid of all my medications. I’ve succeeded in losing weight since, the healthyyounetwork has introduced me to Colin Campbell, Caldwell Esselstyn (the whole family, including Rip), Pam Popper, Neal Barnard, John McDougall, Jeff Novick, Doug Lisle, Alan Goldhamer, etc . . . through their lectures and events. I have also done my homework and read everything from these great people that I could get my hands on. This is the third time I will shake your hand and buy a book (for my son this time) in Tucson. I have been working out hard at the gym, since after my wife invited me to join her there. I have lifted, stepped, kick boxed and zumba-ed my way across the BMI scale from way off the scale beyond obese to the point where obese and overweight meet. I’ve been at that point for around a year, unable to get off the plateau. I was and am still working hard, taking two 60 minute classes a day, often back to back. I don’t just get through the workouts, I push it to the limit because of the excellent nutrition provided by a plant based diet. But I can’t get off this darn plateau. I bought and you signed your first book at a Tucson event, where your girlfriend reassured me you no longer chain ate tofu hotdogs and no longer took supplements. I bought Derek Tresize’s book from you at another event and started eating six times a day. And then I bought Shred It online and applied what I thought were the most important principles in it. Did any of this help? Unfortunately it is difficult to know, since I wasn’t transparent or accountable. But even though I was unwilling to measure my own progress, life made me notice that I could no longer button my pants. How is the whole foods plant based diet failing me, I wondered? Then I listened to an interview on No Meat Athlete Radio where you were interviewed. I was surprised when both you and Matt Frazier said the important part of the book was about goal setting. And you mentioned that there was an underlying theme that spanned all the chapters of the book. I thought maybe I missed something. I went back and read your book again and there in plain sight was my exact problem, Bodybuilder X. I immediately signed up to myfitnesspal and started tracking my nutrition. I added in my workouts and started weighing myself. I even started tracking body fat using calipers as mentioned in Derek’s book. I became transparent and accountable. This is only five days ago. I can button my pants again. And in fact I now know I can transform my self into any shape I want. And I can do it knowing that I’m not sacrificing my health in any way. In fact I’m eating in a way that helps everyone around me. And the example I will set will inspire others to do the same. I guess what I’m saying is I’m going to get shredded. I have you to thank for this, and you have made me add you to the abbreviated list of my heroes above. Without your work how many more years would I have pushed through my classes never getting closer to my goal, when all the effort I needed to put in was a little typing into myfitnesspal?
