Soy and the rainforest

I'm worried that if they don't chop the rain forest down for soy they'll just chop it down for sugar cane for American Ethanol. Take your pick.

Isn't the soy that they grow in the rainforest cheap feed for animals, because they can do a lot more to the crop than they could in the states?

Yes

In either case it's food production I don't want to see then.

If it doesn't happen there it'll happen somewhere else and the soil there will go to sugar cane. Brazilians eat even more beef than Americans and they are only eating more per person every year and they'll find a place to grow feed anywhere they can.

Yeah, it's kind of sad considering what biodiversity the rainforest contains, yet it's just seen as "Land we haven't raped yet".

Americans(some environmentalists are making this worse) want the ethanol more than anyone and we'll get it anywhere we can. Farmers don't want to give up too much feed for fuel so lobbyists are working and succeeding at getting this done. Bush already worked out a deal with Brazil months ago and its gonna happen. If not the Brazilians will take care of that themselves. Most of their cars run off of pure ethanol from cane sugar and they have a growing economy and lots of subsidies for the industry to get bigger. The only way to keep this from happening is if we get most of the meat eating world to stop eating meat and driving much less than they do now withing 5-10 years...not decades and decades so its gonna be too late by then since the land will already be taken(its already designated) and made infertile for years to come even after(if ever) we learn our ways and try to turn things around.
