Best Multi?

Just wondering what everyone suggests for a multi vitamin. I usually don't get a chance to eat really well because I'm alway traveling so any suggestions would rule.

My vote if you don't need an ultra-high potency formula is the DEVA 1-a-day (been taking it for 2 years and it takes care of all that I need). A 3-month supply is only going to cost around $12.95, which is pretty reasonable compared to most vegan multis. That, and the tablet is small and well-coated, so it's very easy to swallow for people like me who hate large vitamins. If you need something on the higher potency side, the Prescription 2000 multi is one that I always get great feedback on as well. Truthfully, I've tried a lot of different multis over the years (I test everything supplement-wise when we get it in), and although most companies have different claims, most are pretty identical and the main factors to determine if you like them are brand reputation and cost. DEVA I like a lot since they're all-vegan and on top of making really high-quality products, they're a bunch of nice people all around as well (which makes me want to support them more!) Oh yeah, DEVA knows that some people have weird reactions to high dosages of Nicain (which creates a red "flushed" feeling and can cause minor itching for a little while), so they changed their formula to reduce the chance of reaction to those who have problems with it. That, and their vitamin is the only one I've been able to take on an empty stomach without feeling like getting sick, too!

And, of course, if you want to go all-natural, the Vitamineral Green that's been mentioned is always a good way to go, too. Me, I have a tough time with things that taste grassy (just the way I am), but I've never heard a complaint about it in the 4 years I've carried it, and we have some customers who are FANATICS for it. One guy in town stops in every 6-8 months and buys 6 cases of the large jars - everyone in his family takes it daily, including their dogs (which he claims helped their energy levels to increase and made their coats softer and shinier.) Good stuff, apparently!

I used to take Vitamineral Green, and some of ther other superfoods over the years. Then I found VITAFORCE, and that is what I have been taking since. It's both a green food, and a multivitamin. I hate taking the synthetic stuff for the most part, so this has been working well for me.

Check out the nutrient comparison chart:

That stuff isnt close to being on the same level as vitamineral green. sorry "joey"

Don't be sorry. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Just curious why you think Vitamineral Green is better? I wonder what you think you are getting out of that product, because I don't really see any benefit to taking it. It is very expensive, but it does not give you the nutrients you need for the day (has no vitamin and mineral label), it does not give you reliable sources of key nutrients like b-12 and d. While they do use high quality ingredients, I just don't see any particular reason to take it.

I wonder what key nutrients you think its missing? It is as complete as any multi-vitamin would be without the dangers/drawbacks of synthetic vitamins. It dosent have a "nutrient" label because those can be deceiving at best.

I would go on the explain more, but seeing as those are your only two posts im going to assume youre spam until proven otherwise.

Assuming I am spam would be both incorrect and be taking the easy way out of this discussion.

The claim that Vitamineral Green has all the nutrients that you need makes little sense when you have almost no idea what quantity of nutrients are actually in there. To claim that nutritional labels "can" be deceiving at best makes little sense and is a cop out. Nutrient labels are what they are. Ultimately, you are saying that somehow you know Vitamineral Green has all the nutrients you need, but that a nutrient analysis on the label is unnecessary and misleading? Very strange argument!

To be very specific about what nutrients I think are either missing entirely or not found in sufficient quantities in Vitamineral Green based on their ingredients, I would say:

(1) Vitamin B-12

(2) Vitamin D

(3) Most other B-Vitamins

(4) Vitamin E

(5) Calcium

(6) Magnesium

(7) Zinc

(8) Selenium

(9) Folic Acid

Of course, they could simply run some tests that are not very expensive and provide a nutrient analysis to prove that they do have these ingredients. Why is it do you think that they haven't done this? I'll give you a quick answer -- because their nutrient label would be very disappointing to say the least.

So again, I ask what benefits do you think you are getting by taking this product? I am unconvinced. At least some other green food powders have legitimate benefits. I think you have been taken in by the hocus pocus, smoke and mirrors of this product.

Best,

Joey

These are the two best natural, organic, whole food supplements I could find with any nutritional data. Vitamineral Green's data is not complete by any means, but you can compare the ingredients of Vitamineral Green with Mega Multi 100, and I think we can safely conclude that it is quite similar, and probably a lot better. It has the vegetables that Mega Multi 100 has and much more. Granted, the bit of data given about the nutrients in Vitamineral may not look too impressive (only about 50-60% calcium and about 45% b12 I believe) keep in mind Mega Multi's serving size is 2 tablespoons and Vitamineral's is only 1, so it is definitely the stronger superfood IMO. Also, it's a natural whole food so there is nothing wrong with taking multiple servings. 2 servings will give you 90% b12 and at least 100% calcium, and you don't have to worry about poor absorption like with isolated vitamins and minerals. The other 10% of b12 can easily be taken from some eating some sea vegetables, or just add some spirulina powder to the vitamineral and you'll have more than enough b12. Their website says it contains the full b-complex, and I am inclined to believe them, because Mega Multi has strong amounts of b vitamins, and vitamineral has the same ingredients and more.

You mentioned D, folic acid, and selenium I think. There is no info on those nutrients, so I guess you may be right about those not being in them, but is it really necessary to get those nutrients from a supplement or can you just get those from your normal diet?

When it comes to vitamin D, why would you need a supplement for that? You get it from sunlight, in nutritionally significant amounts, so as long as you get out into the sun and stay active, you don't need vitamin D from a supplement. I don't know about how much folic acid or selenium you can get from a vegan diet; I need to look into that further.

So there you go. No smoke, mirrors, or other hokus pokus. IMO, Vitamineral Green or Mega Multi 100 would be excellent choices as multivitamins. You don't have to worry about poor absorption, you can take multiple servings without worrying about side effects, and you get the calcium and B vitamins that vegans tend to worry about the most.

I second this. I've just started taking DEVA's 1-a-day (w/ iron). It's affordable and I've decided I want to make sure I'm getting everything.

Also, hi Ryan. Ryan may not plug his own site but I will: Buy it from a kickass vegan-owned company: Veganessentials.

Interesting thread this one. I am curious though how many of you noticed changes when you started taking supplements? Nails, skin, hair? more energy, quicker recovery from training. able to train harder? And if you did notice an improvement, was the supplement the only variable in your diet/lifestyle. If supplements really do work then does this mean our diets are inadequate?

Its big business the supplement market. where can i find hard evidence that can convince me to cough up the dough?

I took supplements like crazy when I wasn't vegan then stopped when I went vegan. It worked before but I didn't think I needed it after I went vegan and I tried taking creatine again earlier this year. It helped me a lot and VEGA makes me feel good too but it doesn't mean a vegan diet is inadequate. We'd all get stronger taking steroids and we'd feel better too but that doesn't mean anything. And in reality steroids really are just supplements since they add to what your body already has.
