So I am going to be running the Austin Marathon on Feb. 17th and am mapping out my training/races before then and wanted to see what you guys throught, especially the timing of the last few long runs. I am generally following a training plan found in a texas endurance magazine so this is mostly based off of that. The marathon is 8 weeks away, so week 8 will be the weekend of marathon and week 1 is this weekend. {EDIT} this is only my big weekend workout, i have a mix of running workouts (hills, tempo, medium distance) and swimming/biking tossed in during the rest of the week. Week 1 - 20 Mile long Run Week 2 - 30K (18.6m) Race (super hilly and challenging, suppo…

My training log in that forum here is consistent for a few years, only some of which I was running, and mostly lifting for upper body development. I started out running a few years ago and had various injuries, then switched to lifting. For the last couple of months I've been running 2 miles on the treadmill at 0 incline mostly. Lately I've been adding .1 mph per session and am now at 5.7 mph for a 21m5s trot of 2 miles. I cool down with a 3 mph walk for 1/4 mile, checking my HR, which by the end of 2 miles today was in the upper 170s. I'm making it on to the treadmill about 3 or 4 times per week. My goal is a 1/2 hour 5k. That's about 5% faster and 50% further than I'm t…

So while I am waiting for my body to rebuild my rib (or waiting to recover from my rib injury). I am wondering what's works best for you for improving your speed/pace of running ? So far I've tried Sprinting, Fartleck. I have to admit that due to injuries I did them only for a short period time. It probably psychological adaptation as it seems I am always automatically going back to the same running tempo. Maybe I should also try running downhills ? Anybody was able to improve running pace drastically? what kinda program did you use ?

These people have just got to be genetically gifted! Running a full marathon nearly did my body in...... can't imagine running races in excess of 50 miles!!! Anyone know people who have done them?

Let's start a running chart with our best times for various lengths. So for fun, we can compete against our own best times as well as our vegan friends! I plan on doing some 5Ks and perhaps 10Ks this summer so I look forward to seeing what everyone else is doing. Once we get enough input, we'll start a chart: Here are some of my numbers (personal bests): What are your best times for running events? I have it charted on an old computer, but off the top of my head: 400 meters = 56 seconds 800 meters = 2:10 1500 meters = 4:33 (100 meters short of a mile, 4:50 mile pace) Mile = 5:10 (never bloody got under 5 min!) 3,000 meters = 9:33 5,000 meters = 16…

I have absolutely no control over my feet whatsoever. I cannot maintain rhythm or a good pace. I started a few weeks ago and I am thinking of quitting.

I was just wondering if any running veterans had any advice in this area? Or, if anyone knew of any good websites to check out... I am currently "training" to do a 10k, although I've been working a lot so it's not working so well, but I am trying. From there, I'd like to do a few others, then a half-marathon.. etc.. I train on an interval style, sprinting followed by light jogging. This seems to work best for my body, and for building up to more miles. Anyhow, bring on the advice please! thanks!

Hi! After a break of maybe about 2 month I startet running again on saturday. I bought a running magazine some days ago. There's a report about running socks. Of course everything sounds very positive but can someone speak from his own experience? Are they really advisable? I don't plan any great distances the next months. So what do you say - advisable (also for beginners) or needles? Greets Kim

Any of you guys have vegan tennis shoes (which is what we'd call them. aka trainers, gym shoes, running shoes, let me know which other terms I'm forgetting)? If so, what brands do you like and where's the best place to find them? I actually want to use them mainly for running, but also for general gym time. I did a search for this and couldn't find anything, but I'm wondering if it's because someone called "tennis shoes" something else that I forgot. I'm back in the eastern LA area (San Dimas area) after just having graduated from The Rolf Institute (anyone need a session?) and leaving the Denver/Boulder area to come back to LA for more unbelievable heat and to stay wi…

Hi guys, Just letting you know that I'm taking a break from powerlifting as I was given an invite to race a 100miler in five months time Needless to say I am back on the roads/trails trying to get some running fitness back! My primary goal is of course to finish; secondary goal is to finish under 30hrs, but ideally I'd like to think I could get close to the 25-28hr mark. We will see... http://www.greatnasebywaterrace.co.nz/format.html http://www.greatnasebywaterrace.co.nz/images/page%20images/waterrace1.jpg

I was wondering if 100 meters sprinters do any weight lifting or if they just run ? They're quite massive... The muscles they gain by running as fast as they can is the muscle they need, but lean mass gained in the gym could be just extra weight to carry, no ? I wanna add this to my training, just sprinting for a minute, and then 1 minute walking, then sprinting again, etc... To see if there's any change on the body. I guess it has to do with explosivity, like for martial artists, or lions, tigers, etc... Those are pics from haitian Bruny Surin who won many competitions for Canada.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3KSr1pozm6Y These are the only good videos I could find on youtube. A few years ago I was watching a television show on it and it amazed me. Every spring I start wanting to do it, but have no idea how to train for it! I know a lot, LOT of running is involved. Jumping etc. But some of these guys jump from a ledge then dead hang off another one, like it doesnt even hurt their arms.

I've heard that its good to do a 5k race 2 weeks before a marathon and sure indeed there is one in Austin this saturday. I was thinking about just running it unoffically since it would basically just be a training run for me and didn't feel like dropping $25, but could still sign up till tonight @ midnight. If you run it "illegally" is there any tact one should perform such as not crossing the finish line and veering off before?

Well, I've finally decided to invest the next 20 weeks training for my first marathon! I was initially planning on building up to running a base of 600 minutes (60 miles) per week, but I'm a bit concerned about muscular imbalances and such. Would I be sufficently prepared if I ran 280 mpw (minutes per week in this case), did some heavy bag training (no pool ) for 180 mpw, and biked for 140 mpw (adds up to 600)? The amount of time running seems way low, but I wonder if the overall fitness I would achieve through the other activities would make up for it.

What exactly are HIIT sprinting protocols? I've read anything from 15-60sec with up to 3 min rest between sprints and even walking/jogging in between sprints. So what it be? Currently I do 15sec sprints at 100% effort with 2min rest for 20-25 minutes, basically until I am wiped. But was also doing 1 min sprints at less than 100% with 2 min jogging 'rest' for 30-45 min. So, what it be? Combo of both? Also, distraction squirrels. http://i.imgur.com/1wXjy.jpg

Hi, I found this great new running workout routine which I have been doing for a few weeks now and think it's great. I brought some weighted gloves 1kg on each hand. I'm not a huge fan of treadmills I like running outside in the air seeing surroundings... My fave place to run is the woods... It's great also because it's bumpy and different hills. I like running when it's wet and muddy... even better if it's raining, something about getting dirty I like lol. Ok here's the plan I use. 5 minutes of running. 5 minutes running while punching. 5 minutes running punching under arms. 5 minutes pulling the sack over the shoulder. 5 minutes of lunges while punching under arms a…

I am new to running, inspired by my sister who is running the Boston Marathon next month (!!!). I have worked up my stamina for the past 2 months and can now run upwards of 4 miles. The treadmill gets excruciatingly boring after 3 miles, so last week it was a beautiful day in Brooklyn and I decided to run outside. Where there are.... hills. And running downhill I thought I was going easy and slow, but apparently not easy and slow enough. I aggravated my left knee and have been wearing a little Ace brace. What are some activities you suggest to do in between now (soreness) and all better, when I can run? I've already been keeping off it all weekend and I wouldn't run on …

I've been on this forum since its creation and don't think I have ever posted in this section before as I'm not an avid runner. Do any of you have any information, book recommendations, or websites, etc, specifically in training to increase your speed? I just checked out Developing Speed by Ian Jefferys. Have any of you read it? Think its info is beneficial?
