Scandinavia in August / Trip Advice?

Recommended Posts

Could anyone familiar with travel in these areas give me some feedback on my itinerary?

Here’s the (tentative) plan:

Fly into Copenhagen (stay 3 days)

Overnight ferry to Oslo (stay 1 day)

Train to Bergen (stay 2 days)

Fly to Helsinki for vegan week ( !) (6 days)

Ferry to Tallin (stay 1 day)

Ferry back to Helsinki (stay 3 days)

Ferry to Stockholm (stay 5 days)

Fly home out of Stockholm

Any suggestions or advice? Do you think I’m trying to cram too much into a 3-week timeframe, and if so what would you recommend leaving out?

I'm not too concerned about seeing all the touristy stuff; when I travel I really just like walking around, exploring, observing, reading and eating tasty vegan food (although with the sad state of the US dollar I'll probably stick mainly to supermarkets, lol). I'm really looking forward to this trip.

I appreciate any advice or insight anyone can offer. Thanks!

It seems like you will have enough time at all the places.

Are you traveling to Stockholm from Norway with train? It might be nice to see some of the country side.

I don't know much about vegan places in any of the cities you're visiting but I'm sure you will have guides while you're there.

Thanks Robert and Offense.

Robert: What cities did you enjoy most?

Offense: I'm thinking of taking the train from Oslo to Bergen, and from Bergen I'll fly to Helsinki for vegan fitness week. I would rather take the train to Stockholm and go on to Helsinki from there, but time will be a big factor. My itinerary isn't set in stone, though. Where in Sweden do you recommend I go, besides Stockholm? What about Malmo, Gothenburg and Gotland? Thanks for your advice.

I can't help you at all. I haven't been anywheres outside of NA

But I just wanted to say have fun, and pack lite

are you going by yourself or with a friend?

Thanks, Tasha . I'll be sure to pack light, nothing worse than lugging too much stuff around. I'm going by myself. I've done a lot of solo travel (it sounds funny to some people, but I actually like it; I guess I'm kinda antisocial, lol). I'm sure I'll make some new friends at vegan week in Helsinki, though. We should take a trip next year to get you out of NA! I really want to go to both Croatia and either Panama or Costa Rica. Seriously, we should pick one and start planning for next year. It could be like a mini vegan vacation .

nrway is pretty poor when it comes to vegan food and everything is seriously overprized. i just woke up and i'm kinda in a hurry but when i get home again i can write down a couple of my favourite places in stockholm.

this site hasn't been updated for too long but it's still worth checking out http://www.veganstockholm.se/lang_eng/

Thanks Johan, I'll check out that site. Yeah, depending on $ I may have to cut out Norway, although I'd really like to see the fjords. I hear they're spectacular. Thanks again for the link!

no probs. norway is amazing just expensive but it's really worth it.

when in stockholm most vegan/vegan friendly places are on what we call "söder", basically the south part of the inner city but there are resaturants and cafes all over the city really.

you should check out

Söder Vegg

It's located on Katarina Bangata 27. Everything is vegan and they have tons of cakes, cupcakes, sandwiches, salads and soups. It's pretty cheap too. Fairly new place.

about 300 meters from that place you'll find

Goodstore http://goodstore.se/index.php

it's a small vegetarian (mostly vegan) and organic food store. they have tons of fake meats, soy cheeses (everything from redwood, viana and such companies), a lot of cool snacks and vegan milks. If you're there on a clear day just buy a pack of hotdogs and go to a park and have a bbq. it's awesome. For snacks, try bonvitas different chocolates. rice milk, cranberries, nougat and coconutbars (remember that refined sugar in sweden is vegan kosher). the adress is skånegatan 92

http://goodstore.se/img/products/butiken_0001.jpg

also pretty close (on medborgarplatsen 3) you will find a big place called söderhallarna. inside there's a lot of different restaurants and shops. you should go to

Södermanna

everything there is vegan except for some butter they serve with the bread. it's mostly a lunch place i think. try the brown rice/soy burgers.

there a tons of more great places but i can't figure them out right now. but these three are located pretty close. almost all the asian places can replace the meat with tofu and most of the conventional food stores sell soy milk, soy cheese and so on. 98% of the bread in sweden is vegan, we almost never use dairy products when baking bread so breakfast should be fairly easy.

I would take the train from Stockholm and then take the ferry from Stockholm to Helsinki (or Turku and then train to Helsinki). People regularly take the train here, it's not like in the US were people are mostly flying.

Gothenburg is nice and so is Malmo but you don't need as much time there as you would in Stockholm since they are smaller cities. Check out wikitravel if you want to read up on the different places.

Thanks, Offense. I'd much rather take the train than fly, I was just thinking about the time crunch since I'd only have 5 days for Denmark and Norway before going to Helsinki for VF week. I'll do some rearranging, though, and see what I can figure out. I'll check out Wickitravel, too.

I hope you have a great trip & take lots of photos to share with us!

I've become intensely interested in visiting Scandinavia - esp. Sweden - after meeting several cool Vegan Swedes, watching Tillsammans, visiting Ikea ( no, i'm actually not joking about this! ) & of course lots of reading. Now if I could only win the lottery...
