Fallen_Horse
So I just bought a box of Cheerios on sale. I skimmed through the ingredients checking for milk and honey, and good to go. I get home, eat 3 bowls, then read the nutrition facts again. Apparently they use vitamin D3 in Cheerios now. So Peta's 'Can't Believe It's Vegan' site is wrong, and I figured I would spread the word. Cheerios aren't vegan!
paulcats02
but you still are... because "being vegan is endeavoring not to use or consume animal products of any kind". that's what we do but, inadvertantly, we end up getting spiked. i'll tell you, years ago i used to go to this luncheonette everyday and get homefries which the owner assured me were just potatoes and butter (at the time i was a lacto-ovo vegetarian). one day i saw him making them and he was pouring bacon grease all over them! imo, at that point, if i ate them i wouldn't be vegetarian (because i knew) but prior to that i still consider myself one (because i didn't know). people get all over me about not eating supplements in gelatin capsules and other incidental animal ingredients such as honey... but for me it's a matter of principle; i endeavor not to use or consume animal products. hsorlando
I'm sorry but I'm terrible with my vitamins, and minerals. What exactly is D3? I'm here to learn and educate myself, so I apologise for my ignorance. Thanks!
Marcina
Yeah, I've seen D3 in some stuff too, what is that?
michaelhobson
Vitamin D3 is cholecalciferol. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cholecalciferol Cholecalciferol is the form of vitamin D normally added during fortification of foods.[citation needed] Cholecalciferol is produced industrially by the irradiation of 7-dehydrocholesterol extracted from lanolin found in sheep's wool. In products where animal products are not desired, the alternative is to use ergocalciferol (also known as vitamin D2) derived from the fungal sterol ergosterol. GRardB
I'm confused. Vitamin D3 comes from sheep's wool? Is that even vegetarian, let alone vegan? I'm lacto-ovo vegetarian, although I eat vegan 99% of the time...I'm just wondering. I wouldn't eat Cheerios anyway. Muesli is better
michaelhobson
Vitamin D3 comes from sheep's wool? Is that even vegetarian, let alone vegan? Eggs come out of a chicken's ass, so I'm guessing a little sheep dandruff isn't a problem.
Dr. Pink
OMG some orange juice I drank yesterday had Vitamin D3 ;-; Tropicana Please tell me that Vitamin D3 doesn't come from just sheep wool. I think I'm going to puke DX I read the ingridients just now and no where did I see cholecalciferol

The only time I consume them is when they're used in baked goods and stuff like that, although I rarely eat those anyway. I'll be sure to stay away from Vitamin D3 fortified foods. Guest
The best breakfast cereal is raw, organic, enzymatically active with highest bioavailability. Here's the recipe: Soak organic oat groats (unhulled) overnight. Available at health food stores or at http://www.srpouthouse.com. Rinse and then soak 2 tablespoons organic flaxseed overnight. Rinse groats in morning. Combine in blender with flaxseed, organic agave, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and coriander to taste. Also can add a ripe banana. Add water gradually and pulse and blend to acheive a creamy consistency. This is it!!!!! Try it - you'll like it. To be alive you must eat living foods! Forget the dead adulterated stuff in the boxes. And check out my other posts for further information. Love, Richard

I think I'm going to puke DX I read the ingridients just now and no where did I see cholecalciferol Florida's Natural uses D3, but I'm not sure about Tropicana. Most of the times it will just say D3 instead of saying cholecalciferol...

FH is right, it will say D3 not cholecalciferol, but it's all the same thing and it's all from lanolin aka the yellow gunky oily stuff that accumulates near the skin in sheep's wool. I've stopped drinking from them ever since. I wouldn't trust them anyway, they're large companies with only concerns about making money.
Dr. Pink
Ugh. I drank sheep wool. WTF is wrong with these people? Orange Juice should just be Orange Juice. I'm going Raw. I'll never buy a processed product again >.< EDIT: Any chance I'll get mad cow or something? Oh god I hope not. I'm going to fast myself until Saturday. And when I do I'll begin the raw vegan diet. This is just like when I accidentally ate that honey bread >.< I know now that you cannot trust anyone but your own hands. So I might as well just buy produce and make it myself. Just make sure it's not organic produce, you don't want any bone meal, blood mealor fish emulsion in your food. http://www.theveganpeople.com/images/smilies/happy0045.gif Got room for a garden? http://www.theveganpeople.com/images/smilies/icon_e_confused.gif
