Here are some before and after pics, though the after pics are from 5 months ago, and I have gained at least 10 lb since then. This before pic was just over a year ago, when I had first started working out, and this was after I had gained a good amount of weight I used to be really really skinny.

Since the more recent photos I have gained a decent amount of muscle in my triceps, shoulders and chest...

Don't really think my photos should be in the bodybuilding section (more powerlifting/bulking), but it seemed the most appropriate thread so here they are. Please excuse the dodgy 'poses'.

the above one was taken a few days after becoming vegan, in nov 2003

Daywalker - it's cool, I am happy for any input. Generally when I gain weight I gain strength, which is one of the reasons for bulking most of the time. For me it seems to be excess calories that equate to strength gains, rather than excess protein. Would you suggest that I limit fat/calorie intake and just keep protein high? I have tried this before and seem to just lose strength, although only a very small amount. Would you suggest cardio to keep bodyfat a bit lower. Again, I would lose a bit of strength but would still do it if it is the right thing to do in the long term. Remember my goals are only powerlifting oriented. Not to compete, but purely to continue getting stronger and bigger.

Regards,

Buzz

You seem to be doing a solid job of bulking up. I think you can incorporate some cardio into it as well. I enjoy bulking up and I'll be doing it again soon.

I still continue to train about the same, I just eat A LOT more

I'd hit the weights hard, still do some sort of cardio, eat a lot, rest a lot, and you can get super strong and super fit at the same time.

Thanks for posting the pics.

All the best,

Rob

I don't think that the little bodyfat you have will impair your health dramatically (it's not that much fat, it only looks much. It's mainly your neck and hips. Everyone has an individual distribution of bodyfat).

As i said, you choose your priorities

I think you looked great on your before pictures (healthy and fit) - but when you're happier with your strength, don't think twice about it.

Cardio is one way. It shouldn't really impair your strength. Seperate from strength sessions, though.

Another way would be carb cutoff at 6 pm on workout-free days. After a workout carbs are ok.

Strength is mainly fueled by carbs, so i'd indeed suggest to maintain or even up your protein (depending on how much you get at the moment) and cut fat intake a bit, so that you consume less calories in total. Don't cut carbs before 6pm - only cut sugars and refined carbs.

Don't make drastic changes all at once. Make one change (for example, start with cardio OR carb cutoff) and see where it gets you, then make another after 1-2 weeks.

When you train properly and keep protein up, you shouldn't lose any muscle at all, and only a little strength in the beginning if any. Carbs to the plenty before 6 pm, cardio days, no refined carbs, less fat (if you eat lots at the moment), high quality foods (natural foods, not processed), high protein (1-1.5g/kg bodyweight).

Cheers,

Daywalker

Thanks for the advice Daywalker, Rob and Jza...

Thanks! Yeah, I kind of like the way I looked back then too. Better tan as well I guess I maybe need to find a balance. My diet is generally good I would say, like pretty much no processed foods, and 95% organic, but my fat intake is pretty high, so maybe I will limit it a bit, at least for a while. With carbs, when you say after a workout are ok, does this mean refined too? or stay away from them completely? As I don't get home from work until about 6.30 I usually have big carb meal around 7, like rice/quinoa with veg/tofu, which i would not like to cut out too much. Why are carbs at night bad? Protein intake is probably about 150g per day, at 90kg bodyweight, so is fine i guess.

Thanks again for the advice,

Buzz

dont listen to them bri!!! they will turn you into a bodybuilder and then who will i have to train with!

I'm not trying to turn anybody into anything

But i think it's not necessary to build up fat in order to get stronger, you CAN limit the amount of pudge you gain while bulking. Only it takes a little discipline in the kitchen, which is why many strongmen/powerlifters are fat

But look at Mariusz Pudzianowski* - he's the World's Strongest Man and he is NOT fat! He as an awesome physique! I like that he kicks the fat asses of other strongmen

Also, there are great powerlifters and weightlifters who have great physiques and still lift at the top.

There really is no excuse for being fat other than you like food too much

Buzz - from your avatar on Vegan Fitness you are a handsome bloke. No offence meant here mate, but carrying so much weight doesn't suit you.

As Daywalker said though, if your strength goals are more important to you than your appearance, keep bulking.

seeing as all you bodybuilding types are being mean, i feel the need to defend ole buzz!

bri - i think you looked incredibly thin in your 'before' photos. you had pencil legs and looked starved! like me, before i started bulking!

fair enough, your carrying a bit of extra fat now, but you look solid and powerful. plus you have gotten so so much stronger - i remember training with you not at all long ago and your bench max was in the 80'skg. now its over a 100kg and getting stronger and stronger.

alex - of course you dont need to get fat to get strong, but using pudzianowski as an example is not entirely accurate. he is a total freak of nature. virtually no other strongman is as cut as that. there is a reason why the strongest men are usually reasoanbly fat. in order to maximise your potential, you have eat as much as possible, in order to gain the most mass (mass not defining strnegth but being vital for it). of all the strongmen i have seen, really only mariusz and kazmaier are cut. all the rest have that extra fat.

this is what im aiming for:

I was going to start a "befor and after" photo thread, but it looks like we already have one.

I may start a new one for the photos section, but feel free to add photos here too.

Thta is one thing that seems to inspire many, seeing before and after photos of vegan athletes. Shock and awe
