have you ever trained a week with leighter weights and then rested for a whole week after 6 or 8 weeks of training to guarantee a optimal regenaration for your muscles and joints?

i just read that this is necessary to increase strength and muscle growth over a long time. i have to admit that i never even thought about taking such a long time out from working out for regeneration.

experiences? anyone?

I do know that, when I take extra time off (anywhere from 5-8 days without training), whenever I come back I am stronger than before, so there is something to be said about extra rest. I don't think that EVERYONE needs it if they're properly conditioned to handle constant training over many years, but for the average lifter, a week off every few months won't hurt one bit and might just help you come back better than before.

i actually hoped for an answer of yours.

you said "every few month". i read one should rest for a week after 6-8 weeks. i think it depends on the individual anyway but for how long are you training exactly until you take a break for a week or so?

I take breaks usually once ever 2.5 months when I have my eye surgeries. It gives me 4-7 days off to rest, then I usually come back pretty strong again afterward. Sometimes I'll take a break after a month if things are stressful and I need more time to rest and recover - I just listen to my body and it lets me know what to do

I don't think that most people NEED to take a rest every 6-8 weeks - there are many people who don't take breaks that often who still make great progress. It's just a matter of listening to your body to see how you feel, so if you're run down, get more rest and take some extra time off, but if you feel great and are up to lifting more often, then definitely do it!

@VE: thanks!

@johan: that's just what i read about it on a german board. never heard of anyone who did that. i never thought that you would be one of the guys who think it's necessery to rest. as far as i saw you can hardly stay away from the gym for only a single day.
