Veg/Hemp/Rice Protein v. Whey Protein, Muscle Thickness

Expecting vegan bodybuilders to compete with omnivores ... It is like expecting Luxembourg to dominate the Olympics.

LOL. Nice analogy.

And regarding DeMarco, well, "even though" he's 5'4", 150...

You can't say that's not impressive.

According to his profile here, he was vegetarian for several years, then fell back into omnivorism, and then became vegan (and a PETA member) a few years ago. So while one could argue that he built some of his muscle with meat, he has been competing, and winning, as a vegan for several recent years now.

In my mind, that's proof positive of solid results.

Not only that, but I'm 98% sure at least a couple of them were non-drug tested events, so he was competing against men who took steroids in his division. I find that VERY impressive!!!!

You may be able to find some old threads VictorVegan, of when he used to post here. There was a contraversy about the fact that he used to take a supplement that was encased in a gelatin capsule. Even though he explained that he opened up the gelatin capsule and took the contents inside only, but didn't consume the capsule, some Vegans had a problem with that and slammed him for it on the board, so he no longer posts here. It's a shame.

No acctually it was that he sold the product in his (and his partners) webshop on ebay, plus they had some whey. He said that he had the opportunity to buy the product straight from the seller without any capsules. And yes, some people had problems with him being part owner in a non vegan company. Freaking idiots. Sure, his religious "speaches" bothered me every now and then but he seemed like a great guy and his experience was a huge contribution to this forum. It's sad he is not around anymore. Does he still compete?

In my own BBing experience (almost 2yrs now, not much I know) Ive found it easy to pack on a lot of muscle, started at like 155, am now 190. But I look at pics of dudes here, and everyone seems so much more ripped than me D: So Im guessing maybe it really is just genetic, and one day we'll have a vegan dude who is able to both put on a lot of muscle and get super ripped, maybe he'll even be chemically enhanced and compete in the O. (I think we SHOULD have the best athletes science can give us)

Btw compare soy protein amino acid breakdown to a whey protein, if anything the soy is better, doesnt seem to lack anything at all and has significantly more arganine and glutamine, as well as being a powerful antioxidant, shame it tastes like shit D:

So anyway IMHO theres bugger all difference in thickness between whey protein and soy protein, I think total protein intake is more important than what type of protein it is.

pure and simple impossible!!

I believe that Zane may have done some "un-natural" things as his major period in training was when steroids were still relatively new in bodybuilding and weren't looked down on in the way they are now. As far as DeMarco, I don't see why someone couldn't build a physique like his naturally with enough time of hard training and perfecting diet under their belts.

If you look back on a lot of muscle magazines from the 30s through the 50s, you'll find plenty of guys with big, powerful physiques who built their bodies on nothing but whole foods and hard training. All done before steroids made their way into bodybuilding and strength sports, so it is possible, but of course, you're not going to be able to look like Ronnie Coleman without chemical enhancement.

While a lot of top-level guys these days rely on steroids to get big, it's not a necessity so long as someone takes the time to learn about proper training and nutrition and puts in the effort instead of making excuses about why they can't get big/ripped/etc. There's too much of a mindset where people seem to think that they've peaked way before they really have, or that without steroids you can't build an impressive physique. The guys who make it to the high level of appearance or strength all live, eat, and breathe proper training and diet every single day, regardless of whether they're natural or not (taking steroids doesn't do all the work for you, so guys that are on are typically training and dieting with more dedication than the rest of us). Most of us only taking our diet and training a fraction as seriously as they do, which is why we get lesser results overall. Whether you want to win a high-level natural BB competition or deadlift 800 lbs., you must approach it with 100% focus and dedication, no excuses or conceptions of how far you can go without needing steroids to get bigger.

As I've mentioned here before, I've seen pro BB'er Art Atwood around town for nearly 15 years, both at his natural phase and where he is now. While he's now about 50 lbs. heavier than he was when he was still natural, at around 225 lbs. he still had a massive build, one that would make Joe DeMarco look absolutely small when compared next to each other. Art always was 100% dedicated to diet and training when I'd talk with him years ago, and only by putting those things first over all else did he get a body that was absolutely phenomenal. Sure, since those days he's obviously gone on to use a lot of performance-enhancing substances, but what I saw prior to that let me know that you can still build an award-winning body naturally, but you have to make it your mission every day and put it at the top of your priorities.

While you may not be able to get 22" arms naturally (unless you're a giant to begin with), most average-sized men can probably get lean 17-19" arms with years of hard training and proper dieting, which for most people is good enough. A natural competitor won't be able to step on stage and compete against the top BB pros, but at the same time, you don't need to be using steroids just to build a great physique, even though too many people think this is the case. While steroids do provide the ability to exceed what someone can accomplish naturally, they don't do the work for you, and they don't do any good unless you're already working hard to reach your goals. And, most physique goals can be reached in due time, so long as you're willing to pay the price of complete dedication to get there.

i think the question should not be "do Vegans lose thickness over omnivores?"

but " do natural bodybuilders lose thickness over steroids users?"

i personally see a lot of skinny fat guys at the gym, that brag about how many chicken breasts they ate today. I am no pro ... but i outweigh and definitely out lift them everyday!

I feel that natural bodybuilding is all about getting a lot of Clean calories and lifting heavy weights. What difference does it make if one moron eats 25 chicken breasts and drink 2 gallons of whey or gets 125 g's of quality protein (that is packed with other nutrients as well!). How much can your body really use anyways??

Finally a sane post!

Demarco is 5'4 @ 150 contest weight, Zane was 5'9 185. Given that zane was 5 inches taller, and only 35lbs heavier, I don't see why Zane couldn't be natural.

Sure, he cooooould have been, but he wasn't. All those guys back then did steroids. It wasn't considered wrong or abnormal to take 'em.

Not saying that Zane couldn't have been natural, but finding pro BBers post 1970 that didn't at least "experiment" with low-dosage chemical enhancement seems to be a pretty rare thing. Their level of usage wasn't anything remotely close to what people use today - by all comparisons, Arnold taking a handful of D-Bol as his preferred "supplement" is probably one of over a dozen things an average pro BB competitor is on at any given moment, so what guys in the 70s did was child's play compared to the drug regimen people will use now.

Nevertheless, I wholeheartedly agree, if someone spent the time gaining the proper knowledge and trained correctly for many years, building a natural physique like Zane's is by no means impossible, rather something that just would require 100% focus and dedication toward achieving.
