Trying to lose weight and need a plan!!!

Hello,

I'm a 23 year old woman. 5'3 and about 155 pounds. I've recently become vegan within the past few months, so I'm still coming into it and trying to get completely adjusted. I know the foods that I eat now are not bad, but I'm not sure if I'm getting enough of everything I need or are eating the right foods at the right times. I would like to know how much I should be eating and how often. I eat mostly fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts and so forth. I've also recently started taking a soy protein powder.

As far as exercising is concerned I've tried a few things. At first I just did cardio machines, but my boyfriend told me I needed to do some resistance training as well. That went well at first, I was able to lose 20 pounds, but then hit a plateau! I then tried P90X, a at home fitness program. Upon doing it though I regained some weight! Although I did notice some nice changes after a month of the program. My boyfriend says the weight I gained is muscle, and gaining muscle is good for burning fat. I am still concerned that my diet and exercise programs are not being as effective as they could be. I know I might be a little impatient, but I still feel as though MY RESULTS AREN'T MATCHING MY EFFORTS! I work really hard in the gym, and would go 3-5 times a week for about an hour and a half.

I hear so many different things about what to eat and what to do in order to lose weight! I'm so confused and discouraged!

Can you guys please help!

I lost 48 lbs and will have maintained that loss for a year at the end of this coming January.

I can't tell you exactly what to do, but these links contain the ideas and resources I found the most helpful:

From July 2007 through about March/April 2008, I lost 105 lbs and my gf lost 75. Our diet was pretty simple: vegan, low-fat (<25-30 g/day), high-fiber. And we exercised all the time, about 5 days a week, all cardio for her, but I worked in weights toward the end. My bf dropped about 25-30 points and hers about 20. We've kept the weight off since then, working in more fat now that we're not trying to lose so much weight.

I wouldn't recommend losing that much weight so quickly, but the same principles apply. Low-fat, high-fiber, good nutrients, and lots of exercise. In hindsight, I would have liked to bring weights in earlier, consumed more protein, and slowed the weight loss.

Thank you for your advice and experiences! Were you big on counting calories? How many meals per day?

These are the type of stories that discourage and confuse me however. I know everyone's body type is different, but I see and hear about so many people who are basically doing the same thing I'm doing but are experiencing results 10 times greater than mine.

Thanks again for your help and suggestions I do truly appreciate them, any bit of advice I can get I'm glad to receive!

Thanks for the info!

How long did it take you to lose that much? What did you do in terms of exercise?

Thanks for the reply

I did about a pound a week for a year.

I went to the gym 3 times a week doing the elliptical for about 40 min and some resistance training afterwards. I was doing that routine for a long time, but not losing weight.

What made the difference was keeping a daily food and weight diary. Its like when you go on a budget and begin writing down what you spend. Before you do it you don't think you are spending that much, but once you start writing down what you spend you are amazed at how much you have been spending and have never noticed. It works that way with food. Even nutrition buffs underestimate how much food they eat. You can work out like a bear, but easily put the calories back with a "harmless" snack if you don't track things.
