Saturday, January 17 (6:00 - 8:00 pm): Volunteer Roundup.The idea is that a ton of people can show up, learn about local various animal protection groups, and get involved with whatever feels like the best fit. The groups represented are tentatively scheduled to be In Defense of Animals, Northwest VEG, Portland Animal Defense League, the Let Live Foundation, Coalition to Abolish Animal Testing, Lighthouse Farm Sanctuary, Out to Pasture Sanctuary, VeganThis, OHSU Cruelty (.com), TryVegan PDX, and the Vegan Outreach leafletting group. This free event will take place at the "Vegan Mini-Mall," 1217 SE Stark St., Portland.

 

Sunday, January 18 (5:00 - 7:30 pm): Northwest VEG Portland Eastside Potluck. Join Northwest VEG for our monthly Portland potluck event. The potluck will be at the Friends Meeting Hall, 4312 SE Stark Street. Please bring a vegan or vegetarian main dish, salad, or dessert; a card listing its ingredients; and plates and utensils for your use. If you come alone, figure the amount to serve 4–6 generously; increase the amount 4 servings for each additional person in your party/family. Northwest VEG potlucks are alcohol-free events, and we start eating at about 5:15. For more information, call 503-224-7380 or email [email protected]. January 18 (about 6:30 pm): Immediately following the potluck, join Chef Al Chase and Donna Benjamin for a demonstration on "Stretching Your Organic Vegan Dollar". Welcome the New Year with economical, fun and delicious ways of stretching your dollars. Chef Al and Donna will take you on a journey of how to accomplish this goal with easy tips and strategies for success. And how about topping it off with a sample of a perfect soup for winter! Sound good? We'll see you there with spoon in hand!

 

January 18: Coronary Health Improvement Project. Overweight? Diabetes? High blood pressure? Angina? Cholesterol? Depression? Cancer? Coronary Health Improvement Project (CHIP) can help. Sunday, January 25 (2:00 pm - 4:00 pm): Internet Activism with Glenn Gaetz. Communication has never been easier than it is now. The Internet has made it possible to research, collect, and spread information to millions of people at little to no cost to activists and groups. Utilizing these new tools can be a very effective way to advocate for animal issues as well as other social justice issues.This free event is presented by the Let Live Foundation. Friday, January 30 (5:30 – 7:30 pm): Northwest VEG Happy Hour! Northwest VEG is organizing a monthly happy hour for anyone interested in coming together to relax, imbibe and dish. It's all rather informal and will happen on the last Friday of each month. In January we'll check out Hopworks Urban Brewery, "Portland's first Eco-Brewpub to offer all organic handcrafted beers, fresh local ingredients, and a sustainable building with a relaxed and casual atmosphere." Monday, February 2 (7:00 pm): Temple Grandin talks about Animals Make Us Human. In her book Animals in Translation, Grandin drew on her own experience with autism as well as her career as an animal scientist to deliver extraordinary insights into how animals think, act, and feel. Now she builds on those insights to show us how to give our animals the best and happiest life — on their terms, not ours. This Powell's event at the Bagdad Theater includes the book with a $26 admission. Learn more>

 

Tuesday, February 3 (7:00 pm): Erin Williams of the Humane Society of the United States, co-author of Why Animals Matter: The Case for Animal Protection, and communications director for The Humane Society of the United States' factory farming campaign, will be signing copies of her book and giving a presentation called "Why Farm Animals Matter." Her talk will address the importance of making humane, sustainable food choices, as well as provide information on some of the exciting recent advancements for farm animals in the United States. This free talk will take place at PSU's Smith Memorial Student Union, Room 101. Co-sponsored by Northwest VEG, Vegans for Animal Advocacy, and the Let Live Foundation.

 

Wednesday, February 4 (7:30 pm): Zoe Weil presents her new book, Most Good, Least Harm. With a world steeped in materialism, environmental destruction, and injustice, what can one individual possibly do to change it? While the obstacles we face may seem overwhelming, humane educator Zoe Weil shows us that change doesn’t have to start with an army. It starts with you. Tuesday, February 10 (6:30 pm - 8:00 pm): The Northwest VEG Book Club will meet at Borders café downtown (708 SW 3rd Ave, between Yamhill and Morrison) to discuss Marion Nestle's, Food Politics: How the Food Industry Influences Nutrition and Health. Nestle has an advanced degree in public health nutrition from the University of California, Berkeley. She has served as a senior nutrition policy advisor in the Department of Health and Human Services and managing editor of the 1988 Surgeon General's Report on Nutrition and Health. She has also been a member of the FDA Food Advisory Committee and Science Board, the USDA/Department of Health and Human Services 1995 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee, and American Cancer Society committees. The title really captures the central theme of the book, check it out at www.foodpolitics.com. This very well may spill over into our March 17 meeting. Immediately following the potluck, chef judges and attendees will sample dessert creations and vote for their favorites. Four winners will be awarded prizes in the following categories: most original, best tasting, healthy treat, and the grand prize winning finger lickin' fan favorite. Volunteer Work Party at Lighthouse Farm Sanctuary

When: Every other Saturday, 10 am - 1 pm

More than 100 rescued farm animals reside at this sanctuary near Scio, OR, east of Salem. Volunteer work parties provide an opportunity to visit the farm and help with routine chores, after which everyone stops for lunch and a roundtable discussion of any topic concerning animal welfare. Join us after dinner (about 7:45 pm), for a showing the new documentary “Processed People," a 40-minute in-depth look at what is causing our current health crisis. Experts interviewed on film include many of the great speakers we have had or will have at VegFest, including Dr. John McDougall, John Robbins and Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn Jr., as well as Joel Fuhrman, Dr. Milton Mills and others.
