dropSoul
This is one fine, fine site: http://www.shovelglove.com/ You take a sledgehammer and wrap it in an old sweater, then perform all kinds of natural exercises like shoveling, chopping, churning, and so forth. Have you noticed the abs and upper body ripitude on people who shovel heavy loads? They rock don't they! And functional too! I'm getting an 8lb. one today!!!! Cheap! Lots of old fat sweaters in the closet to dress it up with and not ruin the floor. And another SUBLIME site:Check out the basics of a very functional, CHEAP, home gym:http://www.stumptuous.com/the-basics-of-a-home-gym
VeganEssentials
Sledgehammer conditioning is good stuff. I got put through the wringer once by some friends who do it, and while they were knocking off 50-100 swings on each side (hitting a big tire at bottom), I was nearly dead after a mere 20 each side with a 20 lb. hammer. You'll feel it in places you didn't know you were working, so be ready for some soreness after your first few sessions You can also do the shovel lift with a barbell - as long as you have a solid collar to put on one end, you just put a plate on the opposite side from the one you hold and lift away. That way, once a sledgehammer becomes too easy for it, you can add as much weight as you need as you get stronger, too. If a 45 lb. olympic bar is too heavy, you can use either a smaller EZ curl bar (usually 15-25 lbs.) or a standard exercise plate bar as well. dropSoul
I'm wimpy now, so I'll start with 8lbs. I didn't get a chance today. My cat knocked over some glass after he freaked, my daughter denies doing anything, yeah right. So the afternoon was spent cleaning and I had to work on my real work. Tomorrow I'm picking it up on the way back from the home school coop thingy.
Marcina
One day I went with my stepdad to work on a compost farm shoveling soil and packing it into bags.. I have never been so sore and tired in my life. We would take a 15 minute break like every hour but it was friggin intense. It was in the middle of December too. I got to drive a Bobcat though! VeganEssentials
I guess this would be similar to Kettle Bells Training etc? Perhaps for a few exercises, but having a 2-handed item like a sledgehammer will allow things that no kettlebell will manage. You can't really do 2-handed motions with a KB unless you run a rope through the handle, and even then, you'd better be in the wide open outdoors, because if you lose your grip, there goes the televison or a window KBs, while fun, don't really offer a lot that one can't do with a dumbbell, but the people who sell them sure would like to make us believe that they've got magical powers which you can't get with any other training tool
hilary wright
I planted my kettlebells, and they grew into a giant golden dumbbell rack.
crashnburn
We recently got a punching bag installed in our garage. I am going to use that and considering Body Weight Training + This Hammer thing. Really Curious about this. Any such "worker" / "labour" technique for the lower body? Squats bending over and lifting heavy stuff So my boyfriend told me to get a back pack and load it with weights so I could do squats while watering the plants, would this be okay for my back?
