Collagen

My 3-year-old veg son has loose ligaments and tendons and tends to get bones out of place (as do I). His chiropractor suggested that I try to find a veg alternative to collagen to build up/strengthen his ligaments and tendons. Anybody have any suggestions?

Okay, let me put this another way. Does anyone out there use anything to support ligament and tendon health?

Christine;

I'm still not being sarcastic. There is also a lot of BS on the web. Unfortunately also on this site. Go to a medical doctor, preferably an orthopedic surgeon, prefarably one with a rehab clinic that treats athletes. That professional will not offer you magic, but if they do have something to offer it is less likely to be a waste or your time and money.

The web is full of snake oil salesman as well as their victims who will try to convince you of things because they want to believe. Tendons and ligaments are very unforgiving things. If a supplement could make a difference you wouldn't have to find out about on web board. A professional with a medical degree would already know.

Go to a professional with a medical degree. This isn't the place to find answers to medical questions.

Having had orthopedic issues I wish you the best of luck.

I mean that my tiny son was limping and obviously in pain. We took him to the doctor and his hip was out of place.

That kind of thing has happened a couple of times since then with other places on his body.

I realize that there are "doctors" out there who make up things to "fix" and there are people who fall for it, but my son actually has a condition where his ligments are loose and so his bones go out of place more easily than other people's bones do.

I was hoping that someone one this forum would have some knoweldge to share of a non-animal-based/non-pill-popping/non-snake-oil solution to strengthen ligaments for a veg 3-year-old boy.

Guess not...

I'm sorry about your son's pain and didn't mean to come across as you are taking it, but you did come here only saying that you were looking for an alternative to a collagen supplement based solely on the advice of a chiropractor.

There are vegan supplements of B3, MSM, and glucosamine available:

http://store.nexternal.com/shared/StoreFront/products.asp?CS=vegane&CategoryID=132

I think that store can be funny with direct links, so if it doesn't load navigate to Bone, Joint, and Heart Support Supplements.

Beforewisdom wasn't trying to be offensive or anything. In fact, I agree with him. If your son has an issue that serious, you really should take him to an orthopedic surgeon. It's a specialist who knows more about the bones, ligaments, tendons, etc. It doesn't mean your son needs surgery.

I think it would be very much worth it to go see one to avoid surgery in the future.

Btw, usually when people post medical questions on the messageboard we encourage others to see an MD. None of us are authorized to give medical advice. We're just looking out for your son's best interest, the same as you.

I really wasn't offended. Really. Sometimes in typing what sounds witty in my head comes off as bitingly sarcastic...go figure ('cause I'm NEVER sarcastic in person).

I have no problem taking my son to a medical doctor. Just ask my sons' pediatrician about the "are my son's toe nails growing funny" visit? Fortunately, we have very good insurance!

I was just looking for some things that I could incorporate into his diet that would help him.

I was talking about this Food Sensitivity in another thread and thinking that you said your condition is similar. And we all being on specific diets (Veg). I started thinking maybe more towards a holistic aproach. And that maybe by removing something or even adding something in your diets, you could have some effect on your natural collagen production. Not trying to diswade you from what your asking about, but was maybe thinking that their might be more you can do, that you could possibly affect with diet change.

Yep, we're looking at that, too. I know that food allergies can leach minerals and vitamins from the body (and even keep you from absorbing them in the first place). My husband has gluten sensitivities; it's possible our youngest has those tendencies as well.

Believe me, I know that there are no easy answers. I'm just trying to put the puzzle together one piece at a time. Let's see...can I fit just one more cliche' into this post?
