Daywalker
Get the vegan passport from the vegan society. And ask Cristian about Italy *shouts* CRISTIAN!?
Tarz
It will be a little difficult dandylioness. You'll get by OK though. I was in Italy for two weeks during the summer of 2004. Veganism is something they can't really comprehend in Italy. Be sure to get a translation written you can take to cafes, restaurants, hotels, shops etc etc. Most places will be happy to make a vegan option for you. You will be eating lots of green salad and pasta!! I had some nice pizza's without cheese. I only found out this week though, that pizza bases can include milk and egg sometimes so watch out for that....... I'm not sure if that is the case in Italy though? I love Italian vegetables in olive oil - peppers, aubergine, artichoke etc. There are a few veggie/vegan restaurants in Italy. Perhaps this book may help - http://www.vegetarianguides.co.uk/products/vegetarianitaly.shtml .Maybe this one too if it covers Rome - http://www.vegetarianguides.co.uk/products/vegetarianeurope.shtml - I presume so coz how could it not be one of Europe's top 40 destinations...... Also - http://www.happycow.net/europe/italy/rome/index.html , http://www.happycow.net/europe/italy/index.html . Rome will have ethnic eateries so you'll be able to get curry, falafel etc. You'll have a great time. Rome is a beautiful city and Italy is a fantastic country. Have fun. Tarz. Tarz
dandylioness - found my translation which an Italian friend wrote for me before I went to Italy, saying basically what I do and don't eat: SONO VEGETARIANO.NON MANGIO PRODOTTI ANIMALI O INGREDIENTI DERIVATI DA ANIMALINON MANGIO CARNE, PESCE, FORMAGGIO, UOVA,BURRO,MIELE O QUALSIASI CIBO CHECONTENGA QUESTI INGREDIENTI.NON MANGIO PASTA ALL'UOVO.MANGIO FRUTTA, VERDURA , INSALATE..ECC. Cristian may want to edit it though???? Hope this helps.
Cristian
SONO VEGETARIANO.NON MANGIO PRODOTTI ANIMALI O INGREDIENTI DERIVATI DA ANIMALINON MANGIO CARNE, PESCE, FORMAGGIO, UOVA,BURRO,MIELE O QUALSIASI CIBO CHECONTENGA QUESTI INGREDIENTI.NON MANGIO PASTA ALL'UOVO.MANGIO FRUTTA, VERDURA , INSALATE..ECC. That's just perfect Matt! Dandylioness, I think you'll be fine as long as you explain what you need. Make sure to order beans, lentis and other legums, there's plenty of those in italian dishes. You can have them with pasta, restaurants are usually very flexible although I would avoid the ones in tourists' hot spots. Pizza is also safe, as far as I know no one uses milk in the dough. Plus you should find plenty of vegetables, some of them you have probably never seen before! Have fun!

Sam
Hi! I live in Italy, quite far from Roma, but I've just asked some frieds who live in Roma to tell me about restaurants or other places where you can eat vegan... and not just a salad!!!! I'll let you know as soon as they give me an answer!
Kathryn
SONO VEGETARIANO. I believe you'd want to change this to the feminine "sono vegetarianA."
epilogue
I spent four-five weeks in Italy last summer, and didn't get awkwardly stuck eating salads ever. I ate them by choice occassionally, but I had no problems getting around menus as a vegan. If necessary, I acted as the silly bumbling giggly Canadian girl who would like a special meal.
