Organic Spirulina

Recommended Posts

Awesome stuff. Just got a bunch from Giacomo and it's great.

I was worried how it would taste, considering it's quite potent stuff. No filler like Greens+, pure spirulina is dark, heavy, and SUPER nutrient dense. At first I tried mixing 39 cc with two cups of water. It was really thick, haha. I had to add water twice to get all of it out of the shaker. Next time I'll probably just go for 20 cc, haha.

I can see why some people have a difficult time drinking this with just water, but I can think of a myriad of things that would taste worse than this. I'm already looking forward to the next time I can have some, haha.

There's lots of options on VeganProteins for medium sides orders of spirulina right now. If anyone is interested in trying it, do it. Won't find a better price anywhere else.

Again just to notify everyone..

Lot's of different brands of spirulina have been shown to contain toxins produced by other algea. Spirulina contains high levels of purines (otherwise low in vegan diets) and therefor increases the risk of gout.

Taking spirulina as a supplement to increase mineral and vitamin intake a wee bit is okay, but to use it as a major protein source is risky.

If you're going to go so far as saying it's risky to consume Spirulina, maybe you should post your references as to why it's dangerous. Or point us to the study that concluded this.

This site is a great resource for all the work done reguarding Spirulina. Many studies have been conducted to examine difference aspects of it's benefits. I won't get into it because it's all listed on the site. You're saying it can be harmful because some brands have toxins. I highly doubt a credible source stating that, but also it's an issue that relates to quality control. Hawaiian Organic Spirulina is not one of the brands, as it's some of the highest quality you can obtain.

Nucleic acids content

One of the main concerns about the consumption of microorganisms is their high content of nucleic acids that may cause disease such as gout. Spirulina contains 2.2%-3.5% of RNA and 0.6 %-1% of DNA, which represents less than 5% of these acids, based on dry weight. These values are smaller than those of other microalgae like Chlorella and Scenedesmus (Ciferri, 1983).

Also, the conclusions on the site is important to note.

Conclusions

The above-mentioned facts stress Spirulina is a non-noxious microorganism with a very high nutritional and economic potential for animal consumption including man.

Spirulina is a non-toxic, nutritious food, with some corrective properties against viral attacks, anemia, tumoral growth and low prostaglandins production in mammals.
