EU bans seal fur: victory

Recommended Posts

Let's hope it sticks. Here in Canada, our government was openly disappointed and received lots of news media attention to let everyone know. They spouted their usual crap about controlling the seal population and that the hunt is actually humane. It is still a crime to witness a seal being slaughtered so no one truly independent can legally keep watch. Illegal footage and reports all point to the hunt being completely inhumane. I am ashamed to be a Canadian right now. Our stooge of a prime minister is on his way to the EU-Canada trade talks to try and lodge a formal complaint.

The Canadian Conservative Government has expressed “deep disappointment, concern and opposition” to the ban and intends to make a complaint to the World Trade Organization if the ban passes.

“The decision by the European Parliament lacks any basis in facts,” said the Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans.

“If the EU imposes a trade ban on seal products it must contain an exemption for any country, like Canada, that has strict guidelines in place for humane and sustainable sealing practices,” said the Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of International Trade and Minister for the Asia-Pacific Gateway. “If there is no such acceptable exemption, Canada will challenge the ban at the World Trade Organization (WTO).”

Europe is always ahead on America and Asia when it comes to environment, health, etc...

I did a protest against hunting seals in Canada, and just because we put a little bit of beets juice on the sidewalk to mimick blood of a slaughtered seal, pedestrians were like : ''you don't have the right to do this. We'll call the police. Clean it up...''

We were distributing some small tracts, about 3 inches per 7 inches, giving information about hunting seals, and some guy said ''save seals ? save trees ! You are killing trees for this. Speak, don't print papers'' etc... yeah right, people are so much in a hurry that they don't even stop to take a tract and read it. When some people are interested to hear what we have to say and take the time to listen, yes, we talk. But how much trees are killed on newspapers which serve for just one day or a few minutes, or boring school books or bad magazines, etc... Some people always invent stupid reasons not to care about animals, as if all the other causes were more important than the animal rights.

One month ago, 30 dead seals were found on the BC shore, and in the news we always heard the same recording from a guy of the association of fishermen, saying they were probably killed by an iceberg and that it happens often... If it was an iceberg, the dead seals wouldn't be all babies, and their wounds wouldn't look like they were done by bullets, or tools like harpoons, and they wouldn't be all there lying at the same place. Truth is that it's fishermens who killed them, to eliminate the competition ! And this happens often.
