Anitbiotics, and the possible after effects.

It all started with a dreaded visit to the dentist.I have had a bad tooth for many years which my dentist has worked on in an effort to save it.However, after 2 separate infections (and 2 courses of anti-biotics to clear it up) the decision was made to remove it completely and accept that it was a goner!

After this I was put on another course of anti-biotics to make sure the gap that was left, did not get infected.

Well, antibiotics are a great thing for lots of different problems, but very rarely are the after effects fully understood. While the anti-biotics kill off bad bacteria, they also kill off good bacteria, in your stomach. This can lead to all sorts of digestive issues, including bad bacterial overgrowth, & malabsorbtion. These can both lead on to very serious problems, including toxins from the overgrowth, and nutrient deficiency from the malabsorbtion (which is where your stomach is not absorbing nutrients the way it should, because the good bacteria have been reduced by the anti-biotics)

The best way to combat this is to go on a course of pro-biotics after you finish the anti-biotics.These pro-biotics will help replace the good bacteria your stomach has lost, and restore balance to your intestines.

If anyone is on anti-biotics, or just finished, I would highly recommend this, because the issues I have had have been very unpleasant.

I thought I would post this as a general piece of information for you guys, as up until recently, I was completely unaware of this problem and anti-biotics, & had I have known, could have stopped the problem before it got this bad.

Peace out

  • 3 weeks later...

Yeah, everytime I've taken antibiotics, I eat probiotic yogurts and ate pickles (i forgot why, but they help in that category of providing or restoring bacteria in the GI tract...plus it works well against any signs of nausea). My mom raised me on that concept, and it works well with me and with everyone that I recommend it to. Every doctor that prescribed antibiotics for me and my friends didn't tell them about pre/probiotics..I wonder why sometimes.

Sometimes, doctors just miss really basic stuff, its really bad. When I had an allergic reaction to penicillin, they didnt even tell me to drink alot of water, which apparently is the most important thing you can do.Oh well, thank god for google!

thank god for google!

Yes indeed! lol, but yeah. They do miss the small stuff, but unfortunatly sometimes it's very important stuff that tends to equal another hospital visit. But again...it's a good thing that people share experiences and...remedies (best word i could think of right now )

You're telling me - one time, when I had first started taking oral contraceptives, the doctor didn't tell me that antibiotics could decrease the efficacy of them..it wasn't a big deal as I was single at the time...but it sure could have been!

Whenever I'm on anitibiotics (which for my sinus issue is bit too often for my liking...this is why I started the neti pot) I ALWAYS eat soy yogurt with probiotics, not only for my stomach but as a girl antibiotics can wreck havoc down there....

I was put on a course of antibiotics (tetracycline) with like 6 refills by my dermatologist before I left for school once, and wasn't informed how to take them properly (every day same time, don't drink) and also don't know why I was supposed to be on them nonstop for the whole semester...but long story short, I killed my GI tract and developed severe systemic candidiasis. I talked to another (kind of hippie) doctor who put me on a zero carb diet to starve out the candida...this lasted 4 months (I wasn't veggie at the time, but went vegan the second I was allowed to have carbs again!!).

It. was. ridiculous.

So now I dread going to ANY doctors because I don't ever want antibiotics again.

Welll its been like 7 weeks since my problems started, and now at last I am getting normal activity in the stomach (and below lol) and I have started gaining weight again as normal.Had a few workouts and seem to have lost strength but not too much, phew!

Hopefully poor belly is fine now!
