JãoP
It'd help if you told us what's your problem, if it's the going down, the going up, your back hurts or anything like that.Try doing a bodyweight squat If you can do it, it's just you may be trying to squat too much weight... VOYEUR
I can't make my posture right. I'm 6"4 and my smith machine is retarded and to rack it you have to roll back not forward..
chrisjs
Don't use the smith machine for squats. As JãoP said, what's wrong with your squats? "Can't make my posture right" doesn't help, what are you specifically having trouble with?
xjohanx
Never ever ever ever EVER use the smith to squat. It's useless compared to regular squats. The only time I think it's motivated to use the smith is if you want to do press excersises and don't have anyone to spot you and for some reason all the dumbbells are destroyed. I use the smith machine to stretch my biceps and shoulders. Set the bar at or above shoulder height, back up to it with your arms out. For biceps, grab it palms down then walk out and hold. For shoulders, grab it palms up, roll shoulders down, and walk out for the hold.
xjohanx
I use it if the chin rack is occupied. And yeah you're right about the power rack. My gym doesn't have one though, only a squat rack and there the safety rack is too low for seated presses.
jamexitar
smith machine is not only useless, it's dangerous too...smith squatting is just not natural as a movement, it makes hold your back badly unmoving during squatting and also you have to try hard to find a comfortable stance for the legs and knees because you go straight down in the movement instead of leaning back as in the normal free squat...and also in the free squat you strenghten your stabilizing muscles too...it's not that difficult to squat, just lead with your butt and go down and lead your butt up....it's just like sitting.. Ruz
Best stuff I've ever seen about squats is on the diesel crew webpage (I love that site!!)http://www.dieselcrew.com/how-to-squat/Read all the way down to BELOW the suggested routines.http://www.dieselcrew.com/how-to-squat/Their video on deadlifting is also the best I have ever seen: I think you have to read and reread their advise many times to assimilate it all.
