My visit to the Humane Society

I posted a topic over the weekend saying I'd be visiting a Humane Society to play with the animals, and I read feedback from those who have done it before. I was afraid I'd be sad seeing the animals in cages, and I was, but it was also a really fun time.

I had a good experience with my friend Kacy who was with me and we made this collection of photos from our visit. The little black cat with the toys was adopted by someone during our visit, so that was exciting.

I plan on going every week to visit my new friends. I hope they find homes soon.

Here is a collection of photos from yesterday:

Yeah, it's actually much bigger, that is just the section they choose to sleep in. I was thinking that as I posted the photo, and I think I have another one that shows the full size of their pen they stay in.

But in general, they are small.

Yeah, I know they are small cages, which is sad, but it was so nice to let them out and play with them, pet them, comb them, talk with them (or to them), etc.

I know Megan, that is why I didn't bring you along. We'd have about 20 cats at home in that case! Just kidding. I wanted to take pics to document my trip and to show some of the great animals there.

I would love to see a humane society that has huge pens for the animals. I know they must exist in many places throughout the world, but the one I visited had pretty small living quarters for the animals.

If I ever become rich and famous which has been a goal of mine since I was little, I will do many great things with my money. I don't make much now and I still manage to donate a lot of it to worthy causes and organizations.

Those animals were sooooo cute! The little 3-month old kitten in the close up photos was tons of fun! He loved the camera and loved to play with the wrist strap.

The puppies were also super duper adorable!

i love cats! it's a pity that so many of them have to spend their lives in an animal shelter

those pictures are really great, especially the closeups

The cats are adorable from a distance. (allergic)

I love the puppies! I hope they find thier new homes soon.

Most of the time they don't spend their whole lives there. In some cases that might happen, but they try hard to find homes for these animals all the time. I didn't see any that had been there longer than 6 months, but I didn't look too closely at all the arrival dates. One was adopted just during the time I was there.

So yeah, it is sad knowing some spend a long time there but I doubt very many, if any spend their whole lives there.

I hope to provide a fun time for them during my visits and hope that many willl find homes soon.

That's one good thing about Milwaukee - the Humane Society here has large rooms for both cats and dogs, so there's no small cages like others that I've been to. Dogs have larger rooms of about 6x6' up to about 8x10' depending on their size, all with their own toys and beds. Cats have either individual rooms of about 4x6' with towers to climb on and sleep in, or they've got smaller rooms about 4x4' with beds and toys, a far cry from the places with tiny cages. They've got a virtual tour online that shows a fair depiction of the space the animals have (I think it seems much larger and spacious inside than the slideshow lets on!) and if you want to take a look you can see here: http://www.wihumane.org/aboutus/virtualtour.aspx

It's a far cry from the dark, cold facility they had years ago, and only with a lot of very generous donations do the animals have a better place to stay. Never forget to support your local shelter!

This one looks like my Cassie cat when she was just an itty-bitty-kitty.

Any update on these sweet kittens and puppies ? Have they found homes yet ?

I think this little guy really likes you Robert. Don't you see the adoration in his eyes ?

UPDATE,

I was there again today. I got a few more pics I'll post soon. I'll just post one or two, not 16 like last time

The update is many of those cats were gone, so they found homes

The really cute little guy a few of you mentioned was gone too. But 4 new kittens were there so I played with all of them. They were tons of fun. Also, two of those puppies in the group of 3 now have homes, just just one puppy from that group left. Most of the same dogs were still there, and I saw a few new ones too. I looked at the arrival dates for the cats and most arrived in February, January, December or November. So most of them have been there just a month or two, and a few a couple of months. One has been there since August

I got some cool new pics and I'll find some of the best ones and post them soon.

Thanks for asking about the update. I think I'll be able to go next week two and I'll report back who found a home

Aww, thanks. It is fun. I visit, play, etc. I also told the people who work there that I will donate money from my movie sales so they can buy more toys, more blankets, medicine, etc for the animals there. I'm really glad I met my friend Kacy is meets me there each week. Next Monday will be week #3

I'll give a report then too.

Thanks for checking in on the little guys, they rule.

This brings up a great topic! Please remember when you purge any old furs (if you happen to have ever had them), blankets, towels etc. Please give them to your local animal shelter for bedding.

hey rob, you might also want to donate a copy of the video to all of the libraries in your area! That is a fantastic idea that could help the cause and educating people - ****patting myself on the back*****

you may also want to give the library some free of thos epeta pamphlets and ask they they distribute one to each person who broows the video.

also, you may want to give a copy to all your local shelters too, for their viewing, and give them some animal rights literature. Most people who work in shelters love animals but need educating on the cruelties of meet. Since you are going in to volunteer/help, and especially since you are donating, they should definitely at least listen to your vegan speechf or a few minutes.

seriously, no joke. you can potentially change the hearts of people working at that shelter by educating them. they will listen to you because they see how nice and sincere you are.

But definitely donate a copy of the your movie to as many local libraries as you can.

Oh wow, I saw the post in Gen Discussion before I read this one. So I was thinking it was my idea hehe, I saw that you posted donate Meet Your Meat to the library, and then I was thinking I could donate my movie too

But you beat me to it.

Yeah, I'll do that kind of stuff. Peta hooks me up with all kinds of literature and I get it from other sources too, so I have plenty to pass around. Many of you know this because you order something and you get a bunch of papers along with it

To tell you the truth, even though it is a good thing that you went, it still saddens me. Saddens me of their situation and idiotic people, uggh....gets me mad. Thanks for spending your time with them Rob, I don't know if I would have the courage to see them in that condition. *Ups for Rob
