I trained so hard I lost my hearing

Recommended Posts

Hey, something strange happened yesterday.

I was training with my boss from work who is also a bodybuilder. Everything was great until my very last set of my very last exercise. I was doing some machine shrugs and when I set the weight down I noticed a high pitch ringing in my left ear.

As I drove home I realized when I turned on the radio I wasn't able to hear very well out of the left ear. After 2 hours it didn't go away.....the loud high pitch ringing or the loss of hearing (not complete loss) so I contacted an ear specialist doctor. He decided he wanted to see me so I called in to work and said I'd be late because I had hearing loss and needed to check it out.

So I went in and did some tests and it turns out I had some sort of acute deafness in that ear, just out of the blue and probably had nothing to do with lifting, since I've been lifting with intensity for years now.

I don't have complete hearing loss in that ear, but a "significant decrease in hearing" according to the doctor. It has been around 30 hours now and it has not improved, but I'm on some prescription medication to regain my ability to hear things clearly and stop the ringing.

So we'll see how it goes, but it was pretty random. There is a scientific name for it but I can't remember what it is. Basically, out of the blue, random, acute hearing loss

It kinda sucks having hearing problems now at age 25 but perhaps I'll be able to regain my normal hearing ability in a few weeks. If not, I guess if you guys and girls ever meet me in person, be sure to speak into "my good ear"

Thanks. I "feel" pretty good, just have a bit of foggy hearing.

Just one of those freak accidents, no explanation, and no reason why. Maybe it's jut a viral ear infection and will go away soon. I hope. I "should" be able to regain most or ALL of my normal left ear hearing so we'll cross our fingers.

Thanks guys,

It's not too bad, but still considered "significant hearing loss" and I have no idea why. The Doctor said it's not too uncommon for people to have this out of the blue thing happen.

But, I'll just take it one day at a time and hope to hear fine out of that ear again soon.

Maybe it's my poor singing out loud to myself over the years that left ear just had enough of it!

I'll keep you guys updated. It's still ringing quite loudly and hasn't stopped for even 1 second for over 32 hours now. But its something I could learn to ignore and it may be fully recovered in a few weeks anyway.

Have a good one guys.

It's not too bad that I have to have people speak in the other ear, it's just constant ringing and I can't hear as well. So even if I cover up my right ear, I can still hear the radio, people talking, etc. But sometimes it sounds like a chipmunk or alien voice, a bit blurry or muffled.

But it's not too bad, just somewhat annoying and made me a bit worried when it happened.

On a personal note........I think I'm going to get back on AOL IM in a couple of weeks. I haven't really used it in months and I've lost tough with a lot of people. So once I get back on we can get back to regular chatting again.

Later buddy,

Rob,

I can totally relate to your hearing troubles. I use tgo have amazxing hearing, but the last couple of months I have noticed that my hearing in my left ear has significantly diminished. This freaks me out too because I too am under 30 and already have shitty hearing in my left ear???!!!!

maybe it is from years of bartending in loud clubs that have finally caught up with my hearing, but is sucks to be half deaf practically so I gotta go to the hearing doc to and get to the bottom of this.

How is your ear doing? Any better? Now that I think about it, I think my eyesight is diminshing as well. My eyes get tired much more quicker it seems lately, and hey also feel really dry.

has anybody else been noticing a decline in any of their senses?

The hearing seems to be getting better, I have another appointment on Monday. It was just kinda random how it happened and it's not too bad, but still a bit annoying.

I'm never around loud music or anything like that, just maybe "strained" too much while training. But I don't even think it had anything to do with training, it just kinda happened. The Doctor said that it happens to people randomly like that and there is a name for it, but I don't recall it.

Anyway, time for me to go, but I hope your hearing gets better as well.

Take care,

Guess what,

Things are getting better! I had my hearing tested again on Monday and it was nearly "perfect" in my left ear. So I regained pretty much all of my hearing. I still have a bit of ringing but that will go away with time.

The Doctor was very pleased and said it could have easily gone the other direction, but since I'm healthy, it recovered quickly. He thinks it was (still is) an inner ear viral infection. So my body felt a bit down for a few days (sick-like) from the infection, but I feel pretty good now and my hearning seems to be almost back to normal

Just another small bump in the road I guess

Thanks for checking in to see how I was doing.
