My mate had a lot of success with negatives (no other step-up really gets the balance/grip down like these do because you're handling your full bodyweight). When he started he couldn't do a single chin, now he can do at least 2x5 from a dead hang.

 

To make the transition from negatives to full chins easier we got him to do a negative for the first rep so he effectively got a bounce out of the bottom for his first full rep (this is much better than attempting from a dead stop to start with).

 

On top of this he lost A LOT of weight which always helps haha.
