LMH7654
Hey Everyone, I like mixing liquid egg whites with my protein shake, however now that I want to try and become Vegan, I know egg whites are a no go. So, does anyone have a good substitute for liquid egg whites? Would flax seed oil be as good or too fattening? Thanks so much!Lauren
Duncan_Idaho
What is the effect from egg whites that you want to keep?
LMH7654
Hey Ducan_Idaho, Thank you for responding. I want to keep the high protein content from the liquid egg whites. I also like that it is low in calories and fat. Thanks,Lauren
Fallen_Horse
Unless you really need the 'liquid' for your smoothie, I would just go with flax seeds. You can buy them pre-ground so your blender doesn't have to do any work, and they add good fiber, protein, and omega-3's...
medman
Hey Ducan_Idaho, Thank you for responding. I want to keep the high protein content from the liquid egg whites. I also like that it is low in calories and fat. Thanks,Lauren Flax seed oil is...an oil. It's pure fat. So it has neither protein, nor low calories or fat. It's got a ton of omegas, with a ratio highly biased toward omega-3 compared to most sources. It won't give you any of the things it sounds like you're looking for. If you want a high-protein, low-calorie additive for your shake, you don't have many vegan options beyond the various sorts of protein powders (hemp/pea/soy/brown rice being the 4 most common picks). LMH7654
Hi Fallen_Horse and Medman, Thank you both for your feedback. Ignorantly, I did not initially realize how fattening flax seed oil was/is. I don't want to add that kind of fat to my protein shakes. I think I would rather just use the protein shake by istelf. The only thing is I find most protein shakes do not taste good and the liquid egg whites really improve the taste. I will come up with something! Thanks again,Lauren
RorschachSoy
What do you put in your shakes? Mine taste very good, and are only a scoop of protein powder (50/50 pea and rice mix), a frozen banana, frozen blueberries, and nut milk.
LMH7654
Hey RorschachSoy, Well, today I tried Vega, the sport edition, vanilla flavor, sample pack and I did mix that with my liquid egg whites (they cost me a lot of money so I am going to finish them) and I did not like it, no offense, it just was not for me. It tasted chalky and there was no sweetness to it. Tomorrow I am going to try the chocolate version. Do you think when I am thru with my egg whites that I should just use the protein powder and soy milk? Thanks!
M_onkeyman
If it's the taste of eggs you're missing, try to find a product called "Kala Namak," or black salt, which is a healthy salt that has the distinct taste and smell of eggs. It's usually found in Indian or international markets.
FormicaLinoleum
I've recently been using PlantFusion protein powder, and I quite like it. I think it's actually the same as NitroFusion, but under a different label for some reason.http://www.plantfusion.net/http://www.nitrofusion.us/products.html I use my powder in green smoothies: water, spinach, apple, pear, and banana. I also have used the chocolate PlantFusion with just soya milk and it doesn't taste too bad (I don't think protein powder ever tastes good).
