Great stuff.

You will need:

A blender: the best investment I ever made!

100ml cold water (pour this into blender first: if you put the chick peas in first you make it hard on your blender)

juice of 1 lemon

1 garlic clove, finely chopped/crushed

200g chick peas (I buy them ready to eat: glass jar rather than tin)

1 tbsp tahini

1 tbsp olive oil

Blend the ingredients together. If your blender has trouble blending, you can give it a hand: unplug your blender and use a wooden spoon to mix the ingredients up a bit. Give it a final whizz and you're ready to go.

Great served with salad and pitta bread.

Interesting you put cold water in the blender first - sounds like a good idea.

Ultra simple bean spread (can be used like hummus)

Put the following in a blender

Can of beans (butter beans work well)

Balsamic vinegar (about a tablespoon)

Half teaspoon of sugar

Olive oil - guess the more you add, the better it tastes

Pinch of iodised salt and ground black pepper

Adding a small chilli really gives it some kick

Has anyone ever had any other kind of spread using other kinds of beans? I'm pondering making my own hummus, but I like black beans and lentils too and thought they might be good as a spread as well.

Lentils make good spread, espcially if you add a little cumin. I have also used black eyed beans (which are ok, but not great - they usually need some decent flavouring), butter beans and kidney beans (both make excellent spreads).

I like to take black beans and blend them up with some soy/rice/almond milk(unsweetened), and add some salsa. Kind of a good bean dip/spread for burritos or something.
