Mini Forklift
Is beer vegan or are there just certain ones that are Wine I know about (we have a vegan wine company here in NZ), but beer? If not, which beers are okay for vegans? Thanks in advance and sorry if this is a dumb question.
vegan_rossco
There are a couple of websites that I used to use (I don't drink very often now) there's barnivore and veggiewines, not sure if they are .com or .co.uk but there are compiled lists of what alcohol is and isn't vegan.Personally I just drink ale when I do drink, my buddy who is a vegan brews his own at home ahha its pokey! Mini Forklift
Cheers mate, I'll have to have a bit of a research online. I haven't drunk since August but do like a beer every now and then like most blokes.
vegan_rossco
Oh and also, you have to be careful about the country that has brewed the beer, for example fosters brewed in the uk is vegan but it isn't if its brewed out of the uk.. Also becks is vegan if its from germany or uk but not from anywhere else ahha its all a bit odd.
Mini Forklift
Interesting, I never realised that the same brand of beer could be vegan/non-vegan depending on where it's been brewed.I normally just go for naturally brewed, organic beers as there's a few cool micro breweries close to where I live; I'd rather give them my money than a standard pub/bar. vegan_rossco
Its all to do with the filtration process I think, same here man there's a brand of ales called badger which is a smallish brewing company that's fairly local in dorset I usually drink there vegan friendly stuff a lot of them tend to use honey
Synny667
I know there is a microbrewery in my city that makes AWESOME beer that is vegan friendly. Reminds me... I want some beer tonight

VeganResistance
For NZ have a look at this list:http://www.vegetarian.org.nz/content/food-and-nutrition/wines-and-beer/ A lot of wines in NZ state on the label if they use eggs or other 'traditional' methods, however despite popular rumour this does not mean that if they don't state this they are vegan. I emailed a bunch of beer breweries a few years ago, can't remember much from that except Vistoria Bitter is not vegan, and speights is vegan. Also I believe some spirits and vodkas are not vegan also. There is also this list:http://www.barnivore.com/liquor
Mini Forklift
Cheers mate, surprised that Speights is vegan, Good on ya mate! Will check out those sites, I quite like some of the Monteiths range (especially the black). Mmmmmm...

Synny667
I miss a GOOD local gig. Metal scene where I am is shit and the beer around here is the typical Bud, busch, PBR, watered down crap stuff.... I am thinking I live in the wrong part of the world these days. C.O.
The majority of beers are vegan and the barnivore site listed above is a good resource. Here is another from beer advocate: http://beeradvocate.com/articles/279 I just don't understand the reason/concept of a non-vegan beer, must be do to tradition because the process doesn't do much for the flavor or quality or alcohol content. Its pretty gross actually and definitely not needed. Cheers beer lovers, -Dylan
Mini Forklift
Tried this one last night, very nice. Wouldn't want to drink too many of them though as they've got a good kick
JubNZ
Havent had that Monteiths, looks good! Ive generally used Barnivore for Aussie, I have a list of the mainstream beers that are Vegan in my head (Boags), if I dont go for Boags I generally go for craft beers, so flavoursome. In terms of wine, Im not fussy, thinking egg is used in wine is sick haha. I think in general Vegans come off bad for there nitiness to many things, so when it comes to alcohol, showing them alcohol doesnt have to be tricky encourages them imo, which is better for all
Mini Forklift
Yeah Barnivore is pretty good, I'm not too fussy on my beer being vegan at the moment as I haven't quite transitioned for vegetarian yet. Will have to go back on and see what I can drink though, from memory Speights was okay but Monteiths wasn't... BOOOOOOOOOO !!
C.O.
This beer connoisseur put together an excellent top 25 beers of the year list. Chatoe Rogue is a tiny off shoot of Rogue that is out near my parents house in the middle of nowhere, pretty excited they made the list. http://atattooedtale.wordpress.com/2012/12/21/top-25-favorite-beers-of-the-year/ -Dylan

AndiMorris
I've been drinking a lot of this over christmas http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRHz_7t6llrWIKBsIkEfeyPeL96YFQGF2wfDfjVL_AlDI-kQb8f0obVVrA0That is a fine beer. I love ales, I'm mostly into pale, hoppy beers that the Americans make so well, and there's several British microbreweries that now brew in the same style. I do also like a brutal stout or porter too. I also brew my own, using the basic ingredients or grain, hops, water and yeast. So completely vegan
vegan_rossco
That's awesome man send us a batch I tried a porter before, I got it from sainsburys, it blew my face off.. Didn't like it!I'm a huge fan of the Badger brewery!
