Upper Body Day

1. Pushup Trio - 3 x 50 (Elevated, Side, Diamond)

2. Single Arm Row - 3 x 15 @ 75lbs

-

3. Curl & Arnold Press - 3 x 15 @ 50lbs

4. Front Raise - 3 x 15 @ 45lbs

-

5. Delt Fly - 3 x 20 @ 50lbs

6. Decline Chest Fly - 3 x 15 @ 50lbs

Trained today despite total lack of motivation. It's cold and nasty out, which means I just want to curl up under blankets and watch movies, let alone move weight around. Did the first set of front raises at 50lbs, but could only must 12. Those were what messed up my shoulder in the past, so I plan to take it easy on those and keep the weight low overall. I guess that's not too shabby coming right off of the standing curl to Arnold press. Probably could have done something more creative other than the decline chest fly (bar dips, woodchoppers, tricep work, etc.). I'm feeling a little stagnant with the exercises I've been choosing over the last few weeks, so I should probably treat myself and go back through old workouts for recycling purposes. I've been over-sleeping lately, which makes sense given how much stress I've been under lately; I think it's finally catching up to me, or it's because it gets dark here at 4pm now. Not really one for winter anymore, which is odd given my apparent desire to move further away from the equator. Maybe I just need two homes for seasonal purposes! Anyhow, energy is good, spirits have recovered well . . . now if I could just attain professional satisfaction. Legs tomorrow.

Hey, how was your last trip back to Madison? Any updates on gettin the hell out of Chicago? I keep hearing how rough it's been up there already this season, and I've been thinkin about ya. Hope you're staying warm and keeping your head up.

Best,

Jaime

Hey, good to hear from you. Our last trip up was kind of a bummer. The place we stayed was less than expected (kind of a dump, a risk on AirBnb I've come to realize). I was in a weird mood the whole time, so it got pretty stressful - which was a total bummer. I think I was bummed because I was thinking about how difficult it seems to get anywhere lately. Then on our last day there, my boss sends me a text message an hour before an important deadline telling me they can't find the order I drafted, which just illustrates she doesn't do her job really. Also, at the exact same time, our little dog was having seizures, and there were roofers working on the house we were staying in. So it was kind of a perfect (shit)storm. Anyhow, we did the things we like there, which was nice, but I think the undercurrent of stress and sadness kind of took over and soured the overall experience.

Have you noticed how relatively expensive property is there? Those homes off Willy on the isthmus, all broken down, yet selling for $350k+? That's insane. We paid only slightly more for our house here, and it's fully updated. Those places there would need at least another $50-75k just to update. It's kind of funny actually now that I think about it... It seems like those selling there are asking for gentrification, yet also complaining about the same. Kind of seems like the economy of scale theory goes out the proverbial window there, at least with respect to property.

As for now, I'm just trying to find a job here which is pretty slow going. Weather has been pretty cold, but no real snow yet - which is nice. I fucking hate snow in the city.

How are you guys doing? Everything settled in?

Core / Throw-Away

1. Stability Ball Pike x 12

2. Oblique Dips x 15*

3. Reverse Decline Crunch w/ Pulse x 15

4. Russian Twist x 25 @ 25lbs

5. Side Bends x 20 @ 45lbs

6. Bicycle Abs x 50

Only one set, so does this even count? Got distracted early on trying to find a place to stream the Packers game on Sunday since I'm too cheap to pay $230/mo for cable. Got to the second set and just wasn't feeling it at all. I'll get back into it on Saturday. Slept like shit last night anyway.

Yeah, I've used Air BnB a few times and it's always kind of a toss up regarding what you're going to end up with. Property actually in Madison proper is very expensive, especially if you want to live anywhere within four-ish miles of the capitol. If you're willing to go out to any of the close suburbs you can get much better deals because the property taxes aren't as insane. For instance, Fitchburg doesn't have any green space between the town and Madison, uses the same public works, school systems, buses, etc but because of lower taxes you can find a really nice place with an actual yard (difficult to find in close to the capitol or University) for more in the $200k arena. Anywhere near the capitol or near the University gets very expensive, very quickly. The condos right on the square are as expensive as anything in Chicago, that's for sure. One thing about Madison vs Chicago in the winter is I think that Madison does a better job of plowing and maintaining the streets, which can make it a much easier place to live through the cold months.

Hopefully you're able to find a new position somewhere with a boss who is actually able to manage things and keep organized, that's the most frustrating thing. I'm dealing with a bit of that at my new position down here, and it's looking like I won't be staying at this lab much longer than possible if I can find a different gig. Right now it's paying the bills though, and I haven't gone completely mad, so I'll stick it through.

Florida in general is awesome, and I really love it down here. We've been going to a lot of state parks on the weekends and taking the dogs hiking. It's hilarious that the locals think that when we hit 40degrees that it was freezing- people were literally wearing parkas. The house is mostly unpacked, we're slowly but surely acquiring furniture to replace the things that we left up in Chicago. My partner really likes her program, so everything is going really well with the exception of my own job frustrations.

I hope something new pans out for you soon! It seems like you could use a break.

Hey, thanks for the tips re: property there. It's good to hear some positive things, and interesting that the surrounding areas share the same public works/schools, yet benefit from lower taxes. I was just blown away at the price tag on some of those obviously run down houses. In fact, I'd be willing to wager that a property in that condition (neighborhood dependent, of course) would have a hard time selling here in the city. But a single family 4+ bedroom in Lincoln Park for around $400k - not updated - even then I'm not so sure.

I feel you on the job front. It's nearly impossible to work for someone who obviously does not care about the job in general. Makes pretty much everything I do seem a little meaningless, even though it happens to have a great impact on a lot of different people. So, I guess that keeps me going; that and the intellectual aspect, which I still find enriching. What's really disappointing is that the person in charge appears to be in the position for all the wrong reasons (i.e. esteem over substantive involvement). It's a very academic position, but also public, so you can imagine how having the wrong kind of person in the position could be less than favorable. The judiciary has no room for rock stars, despite what Scalia might think. In my opinion his showboating only serves to discredit the bench. They don't need to be hermits, just not out on book tours. After all, for as serious as they take themselves and the work being done, one would surmise there is little time for extracurricular activity.

I would love a break, and since I have some additional free time here in the next few weeks (a benefit of being efficient at work), I'm going to use it to seriously put myself out there and find the right opportunity.

By the way, this is funny, I mentioned our last conversation to my wife and she said she actually follows you on Instagram, but had no idea we were buddies on here! Small world, eh?

Hope you guys have a good holiday. We bought a Field Roast roast thing for Thanksgiving. Also, I picked up some of the Field Roast Chao cheez slices - they are pretty good. Found them at Whole Foods, just fyi.

Full Body Day - Giant Sets

1. Incline Bench - 3 x 12 @ 145lbs

2. Bent Over Row - 3 x 15 @ 145lbs

3. Stability Ball Knee Driver - 3 x 20

----------------------------------

4. Pullup Trip (W/N/C) - 3 x 12

5. Woodchoppers - 3 x 12 @ 35lbs

6. Elevated Oblique Dips - 3 x 12*

7. Deadlift - 3 x 15 @ 160lbs

8. Front Squats - 3 x 15 @ 90lbs

9. Stability Ball Passback - 3 x 15

Awesome training today, even including the break to walk Penny. It was relatively warm outside today (45*F), so I decided to get her out. It had been a couple weeks since she's had a proper walk. Well, it lasted about 15 minutes before she got too chilly and we had to come home. I fucking love her so much. I wore a compression shirt while training today and found that it was really comfortable, and felt like it helped with form a little. Even if not, it still looks pretty badass on me while I'm lifting haha. This was solid training too, so I must have really needed a couple days of rest. Going to make up a feast tomorrow for the Packers game; super pumped about that.

Back Tuesday. Have a good weekend everyone!

Ps. Here's a pic of Penny on our ride home from the park.

Full Body Day - Circuit Style, 3 Rounds, Rest 90 Seconds

1. Decline Fly x 15 @ 70lbs

2. Burpee to Front Raise x 12 @ 50lbs

3. Walking Lunge x 20 Steps @ 70lbs

4. Squat/Curl/Press x 12 @ 50lbs

5. Bar Dips x 20

6. Wall Sit with Plate Rotation x 12 @ 50lbs

7. Single Leg Deadlift x 12* @ 70lbs

8. Aussie Pullup Trio x 15 (W/N/C)

Awesome training today. Don't usually train on Mondays, but my wife had to work today, so I thought I would get this in. Enjoyed the circuit aspect of this. Really worked in some grip strength too with all the carrying and holding exercises back to back. Really need to get some new dumbbells sometime soon. I would love to get in some heavier DB press training like I used to do back when I went to the gym. Snow all day today, and it's pretty damn cold. Sucks.

Back tomorrow with some core training. That should give me a day of rest on upper/lower so I can hit heavier weights on Wednesday. Plan to do a quick set on Thanksgiving day if I get up early enough. Speaking of.... anyone have special plans? We are making a Field Roast Forager's Roast, some mac-n-cheez, mashed potatoes, some kind of green vegetable, cranberry sauce, and probably a pumpkin pie from Whole Foods. Nothing out of this world. I cooked up a mega feast this weekend, and kind of ran up the food bill - and drank a TON of beers. So, it's time to play it cool. Back tomorrow!

Core Day - 2 Rounds, Rest 30 Seconds

1. Stability Ball Knee Drivers x 20

2. Side Plank w/ Rotation x 15*

3. Incline Reverse Crunch w/ Pulse x 12

4. Side Bends x 20* @ 45lbs

5. Bicycle Abs x 50

6. Side Plank Crunches x 15*

Kind of a weak session but I got a later start than usual, and I want to hit up the grocery store tonight as opposed to the madness that I would expect to endure tomorrow (hint: I bought all groceries for Thanksgiving Nov. 26, 2013; terrible idea.) So I ripped through theses two sets, and called it a day. I can tell I did at least some damage though given how tight my abs feel just writing this. I tried to pick stuff that would hit the hardest. Those Incline Reverse Crunch to Pulse are killer! Gets you right in the upper abdomen. Haven't done the Side Plank w/ Rotation in a while either, and forgot how challenging those can be despite being pretty simple. Anyhow, I've got my shopping list, game face on, and death metal tunes blasting to plow through these errands.

Wish me luck!

1. Incline Bench - 3 x 15 @ 145lbs

2. Rows - 3 x 15 @ 145lbs

-

3. Pullup Trio (W/N/C) - 3 x 12

4. Circus Press - 3 x 12* @ 35lbs

-

5. Close Grip Curls - 3 x 15 @ 55lbs

6. Decline Close Grip Press - 3 x 15 @ 70lbs

Pretty simple training today, if not boring. Wanted to make sure I got a decent pump before stuffing myself with junk food and beer tomorrow. After that though, it's game on for clean dieting. I've been hovering around the 164lb area for a couple weeks now, and I'd love to drop down back below 160 - and preferably back down to my 152lb low. But, I'd take 155 - 158. My clothes just seemed to fit better then. Otherwise, I can definitely tell I'm making some gains, which is awesome after I felt like I had an extended plateau.

Anyway, taking a day of rest tomorrow. Probably back at it on Friday, unless hungover.

Happy Thanksgiving all!

Full Body Mix

1. Flat Bench - 3 x 15 @ 165lbs

2. Aussie Pullups - 3 x 15

-

3. Front Squats - 3 x 15 @ 90lbs

4. Close Stance Deadlift - 3 x 15 @ 90lbs

-

5. Front Raise - 3 x 15 @ 50lbs

6. DB Pullover - 3 x 15 @ 50lbs

So. Fat. Really though, I probably put on a good 5-7lbs over the past two days of eating whateverthefuck I wanted, including pie, chips, beer, cranberry sauce, macaroni and cheez, mashed potatoes, delicious chocolate chip oatmeal cookies . . . Plus not drinking enough water, and general lazing about didn't do me any favors. Even though it was a holiday, I do need to get my diet back in the right place. Anyhow, today was nothing special. I haven't been sleeping well lately, even while on this little break, and it really saps my motivation for training. Oh well, got this done. I suppose it's better than nothing, and certainly better than eating the rest of those tortilla chips in the pantry. Making some miso soup/noodles tonight, which should be good and a little different from the norm; though I'm not going to lie, I'd rather have pizza.

Rest tomorrow and Monday; back in action Tuesday.

Have a good weekend!

2. Squat Jumps - 3 x 15

3. Deadlift - 3 x 12 @ 185lbs

4. Reverse Lunge Kix - 3 x 15*

-

5. Bulgarian Split Squats - 3 x 15* @ 70lbs

6. Hamstring Curls - 3 x 20

Good training today, even if a little pedestrian or repetitive of previous sessions. Oh well, it was nice to get in some heavier weights on legs, which I have been avoiding for a couple weeks now. Feeling pretty good lately though; positive attitude, eating enough (probably too much), focused training and work. Going to start incorporating more body-weight exercises into my high volume days. Still not sleeping very well, which sucks. Maybe I should start with some melatonin before bed . . . Though would be annoyed with any grogginess ensuing day after. Upper body tomorrow.

Upper Body Volume Day

1. Pushup Trio (Elevated, Staggered, Diamond) - 3 x 50

2. Rows - 3 x 15 @ 150lbs

-

3. Pistol Pullups - 3 x 15

4. Plate Overhead Raise - 3 x 15 @ 35lbs

-

5. Curls - 3 x 15 @ 55lbs

6. Skullcrushers - 3 x 15 @ 55lbs

I'm determined to build some size on my arms, which I hear is easy to do if you hit up triceps; hence the skullcrushers. I typically totally ignore triceps, at least with respect to isolated movements. I do love doing pushups, and I'm pretty proud that I can do sets of 50 in not just a standard form - that rules. But what really made me happy about this training is the pullups - never hit 15 before, pretty much always crapped out at 12. Upper back is pretty sore from yesterday's deadlifts, which I think is a sign of me using proper form(?). I saw a trainer somewhere mention that you want to keep the upper back tight so as to relieve pressure on the lower back. I hope this is accurate information. My traps are pretty sore as well, which is cool as I tend to never hit those at all either.

I will say that I am in need of some new exercises, so I'll have to go back through old sessions. Maybe some of you can give me some new ideas?

I think I'll hit core tomorrow, as I expect my legs to still be pretty sore - so maybe hitting legs for volume isn't such a great idea. I'll see how I feel.

Core Circuit - 3 Rounds, Rest 1 Minute

1. Reverse Crunch Trio (Crunch w/ Pulse, Leg Lift, Scissor Kicks) x 15/20/40

2. Elevated Oblique Dips x 15*

3. Stability Ball Knee Driver x 20

4. Side Bends x 20* @ 45lbs

5. Jacknife x 15 @ 25lbs

6. Side Plank w/ Rotation x 15* @ 10lbs

Still really sore legs today, so I opted for core training. I'll do a full body session on Saturday to hit legs again. To be honest, I find core training to be kind of annoying, and possibly unnecessary. I usually find myself doing abbreviated sessions, but not today. This didn't take long at all, and I know I'll get some benefit out of it long term. Not much else to say about today really. Excited for the weekend. Going to eat some delicious tacos, or maybe a burrito on Saturday. Otherwise, everything seems to be going well. See you Saturday!

5. Close Stance Deadlift - 3 x 15 @ 90lbs

8. Delt Fly - 3 x 12 @ 70lbs

9. Curls - 3 x 10 @ 70lbs

This kicked ass. I had to take a small break in the middle and eat a couple dates because lately I cannot seem to satisfy my appetite. Hopefully that's a good thing. Took down almost 2 liters of water during this session, which will help me with the beers I plan to consume later tonight. I love training this way, and I wish I had more energy during the week to hit up a session like this. However, I feel really good about my training as of late. Back on Tuesday, because now it's time to eat!

Solid training today, and nice to mix in some different stuff for once. Feeling really hungry today for some reason, so I guess I'll give in and feed the machine. Big salad for dinner. Not really much else going on, and trying to eat right now so a little too hungry to type much on this tonight. Legs for volume tomorrow.

6. Hamstring Curl - 3 x 25

This felt pretty good today. Honestly, an overall good day; even though I didn't hear from a job I applied to - oh well. I really do prefer high volume training to heavy weight/low reps. Mentally, it really makes me feel like I've accomplished something, even if it does become a bit taxing after a while. It really only becomes noticeable on leg days. Happy about my WLDL weight too, that's pretty sweet. Had a HUGE salad for dinner, with some bbq tofu and kidney beans on top. Feeling full, and relaxed

Upper body for volume tomorrow.

Well, I just wasn't mentally focused today at all. Plus, the left side of my upper back was giving me some grief on those rows, so I thought I would call it a day after the first giant set. At least I did something, right? Haven't had a failed day like this in a while, so I guess I'm due for some rest. Should pay more attention to how I feel during the week, because I was complaining all week of how tired I felt. Oh well, it's just one day, and haven't really taken much of a break for a month or so now... Bummer is that I was planning on eating a ton tonight, so I guess I'll have to curb my indulgence (good luck on that). I think I made the right choice because even after that little work I feel like crawling back into bed. Maybe I'll make up for this day next week. Rest tomorrow.

Haha well, I felt like a jerk for wimping out earlier, so I ate some lunch and found some energy and at least completed the third giant set planned for today. Definitely didn't have it in me to suffer through any leg work. Now for that rest I promised myself...

Felt good to get in a solid pump today, after eating a bunch of junk over the weekend. I'm honestly ready for the holidays and football eating schedule to be over - getting fat over here! lol Anyhow, I've also been sleeping horribly, so I'm surprised I could muster this much on a weekday. Anyway, my internet's been spotty again, so I'll keep this short. Legs tomorrow.

Legs

1. Front Squat - 3 x 15 @ 100lbs

2. Squat Jumps - 3 x 15

-

3. Single Leg Deadlift - 3 x 15* @ 55lbs

4. Skate Jumps - 3 x 15*

-

5. Bulgarian Split Squat - 3 x 15* @ 70lbs

6. Lunge Jumps - 3 x 20

Every leg day about an hour before I hit the weights I start to bemoan my intentions. Why must legs be such a task? There's no real fun way about it, I guess except for doing deadlifts. Lunges, jumps, etc.; just not fun. Oh well, I'll reap the benefits yet, and at least I don't have little bird legs and a hilariously off-balance upper body to boot. Almost gave up before the last superset, but managed to push through despite feeling really hungry at the time. Came upstairs and destroyed a big salad, some beyond meat crumbles, and quinoa and broccoli. I really love greens. They taste so damn good.

Going to hit up core tomorrow, and maybe some light cardio as I plan to go out to lunch.

Core Day - 3 Rounds, Rest 30 Seconds

1. Stability Ball Knee Driver x 20

2. Side Bends x 20* @ 45lbs

3. Decline Situp x 15 @ 25lbs

4. Hanging Oblique Raise x 20

Despite being super sore from leg training yesterday, I decided to get in a little bit of core work. I was planning on doing four rounds of this, but I got hungry at the end of the third, and just packed it in. Anyhow, not much else going on - listening to this Serial podcast, so I'm kind of hung up at the moment. Full body on Saturday!
