robert
A few days ago, there was a 20 year old kid squatting more than 5 plates, and a 40-something year old bench pressing more than 5 plates. For those who don't know, that is more than 500 pounds. 5 45-pound plates on a bar is 495 pounds and each guy had a 10 on each side in addition to all the plates. To me, that was some serious weight, especially to bench press! I would't want to try to squat that much either. Maybe someday Are there strong beasts like this at your gym? It is one of my favorite things to watch. I'll stop what I'm doing just to observe, and then I'll get back to my set with added intensity
willpeavy
Yeah those are huge lifts. When I worked out at Gold's I used to see some guys lift like that. I train at a college gym now, and nobody there is nearly that big.
robert
I love watching heavy weights being lifted. That is one of the reasons I'm slowly getting more into powerlifting type exercises. I want to be big and strong, I'm getting tired of being lean with muscle definition and veins. I'd love to have both, but there is some special feeling that takes place when I lift something heavy. I'm not moving 5 plates, but I've had a few good lifts lately (while dieting and doing cardio preparing for a show). So I think if I was at full strength and actually trying to add weight and strength, I'd see some good results. Lift Heavy! But be Careful! Have Fun! Get Big! Get Strong! Feel Great! jonathan
The first 5 plates lift I will get is the deadlift, and I'm pretty close now (got a new pb of 210kg last night, which is 462lbs). I only need to add another 22lbs to get 5 wheels. And I need to order another pair of 20's! There are some absolute monsters out there - there is one discussion board I read and occasionally post on just called strength discussion. Many of Britains top strongmen keep logs there. There is one guy called welshdragon is very close to getting a few records in overhead strength (his top log press is 185kg/407lbs) but his other lifts include 300kg squat for 5 reps (thats 7 wheels folks) a 350kg deadlift, 74kg seated dumbell overhead press for 2 reps. He is injured on the bench at the moment and still does 6reps with 160kg. Nutty!
Daywalker
I had 5 plates today on the squat bar - of course, i didn't squat it I just want to get myself used to heavy weight Also, i have to train for the 250kg yoke walk in may, i'm still afraid i might break under that weight
jonathan
It's ok alex - we have reduced the weight significantly so that more people can be competitive. It's only going to be about 180kg now. Good that you are training for it Jonathan
Hero
5 plates is insane! damn. natural lifters? or steroids? i'm natural.i've done 7 plates before on each side on a squat machine.....which of course doesnt carry over to actual squats. so that doesnt count. lol. the most i've ever squatted with a real bar and not a machine, has been about 350 lbs. robert
yeah me too 345 for 3 reps was my best. Once I get back into squats in the near future, I should beat that. These guys are natural as far as I know, just big guys, built like strong men. They have football lineman backgrounds I think. Or some sort of football background and are quite strong but don't "look" that big. A few guys from Downing's gym say hi to you Topher, by the way Jeff from Wisconsin and Mandy from the front desk. sensless
I'm busy trying to hit six plates for squat and deadlift. I've broken the beloved 6 plates off the floor on the DL about an inch, and gotten it for the 18" DL, but that's it for now. I'm hoping I can nail it at the Summerfest competition on July 9th. Not sure when I'll hit that for my squat, as the stands I have at home don't have support racks so dropping the weight isn't a problem, nor is doing safe partials. VE might hit this on squat before me, but no way on the DL.
robert
Awesome sensless. Tell me about the Summerfest competition. Is it in PA in early July or are you referring to a different Summerfest? I'm still working with 3 plates for most heavy exercises like squats and deadlifts Good luck at the contest!
sensless
Summerfest is a huge festival in Milwaukee, WI every year. Several hundred thousand people attend the 11 day event, tons of (music) shows, drunken tom foolery, weightlifting competitions, food, etc. Just a huge party. The weightlifting competition is on July 9th this year (Sunday) and it consists of a Clean & Jerk and a Deadlift. Last year I took 4th in the Clean & Jerk and 3rd in the Deadlift. The winner of the Clean & Jerk did 175kg at 181lb, I think he finished in the top 12 at world's this past year. The guy that took second also competes at the national and world level and finished 10kg behind at 165kg. The third place guy in my weight class (under 220) did 140 or 145kg. So I was pretty far behind the top three. In the deadlift the top two guys tied at 575lbs in my weight class (under 220), so I was pretty far back again since I only pulled 530 there. The heaviest pull was a 275lb guy coming off surgery to repair a ruptured bicep (from deadlifting). He just did a "token" lift of 730lb. He is a pro powerlifter, don't remember his name. He has pulled over 800lb before. So there is usually some good competition there, but the range of competitors is huge as there are rank beginners all the way up to world class lifters. Makes it fun, especially with all the people at summerfest stopping by making it a huge crowd for a lifting meet. I think they have a bodybuilding competition as well; you could check into that. robert
Oh wow, I'll look into it. I think my plans are to to go the Vegetarian Summerfest in Johstown, PA July 5-9, but maybe I can stop by there afterwards. I might be competing on July 16th, so if there isn't a contest there, no worries, I'll have another one. Can you give me the website, if there is one, for that event? Or the exact dates for the 11-day fest? I enjoyed your screaming DL photos from last year! Right on man.
Startingover
I would love to see some people move that kind of weight. I work out at a college too, and even when the football team is in the gym 2plates and some change is the most I ever see anyone use.
Guest
I was squatting 6 plates and change when I was 19 and vegan...no biggie...my friend Gavin does much more...I've seen him squat 800 with just a belt(no squat suit) and he just turned 21...I've also seen him bend a bar permantently after deadlifting 750(it shouldn't do that but it did and it was really funny)
robert
Yeah, good call. My vegan friend went for a world record in the deadlift recently and almost got it! He weighs something like 159 or 149 lbs and was lifting over 500 lbs Imagine if he bulked up to 180 or more. I'm scared to think how much he might lift then! He also benched over 400 lbs, that's a lot of plates for a little guy!
Guest
Was that a suitless max for the squat???
Gary
i can't wait to get to 5 plates. for some reason my legs develop way faster than my upper body. i've been really trying to build power and strength the last month or so. i squatted 4 plates for 7 extremely difficult reps on friday and i'm so happy. about a year ago i herniated a few discs in my back, so getting 405 lbs was a big achievement for me. now i've got to work on the sad excuse for a bench press working a manual labor job everyday does not help the cause. anyone else here deal with the manual labor setbacks? Have you tested your 1 rep max?? Are you vegan? Jonathan
Gary
no ive never really tested a one rep, im still leary about the old back...and yes ive been vegan for a little over 2 years now. squats have always come easy to me but everything else is a different story. my deadlift and bench are way behind. i herniated the discs doing deadlifts when i was younger, i had no clue about proper form and how to build strength. i would throw 300 lbs on the bar and lift it all curved back and no legs until i couldnt go anymore. needless to say i got hurt real bad . off topic but there is a video on youtube about vegan lifting unnaturally. is that you? sorry if its not but the guy in it bears a resemblance. jonathan
Hehe! That is me, along with my wife and my friend. Do not take it seriously - it is merely a spoof of the DVD produced by veganbodybuilding!! Great that you are vegan Next question - how deep do you squat with the 180kg?? Jonathan
Gary
i think i take it pretty deep, im not sitting down or anything. when i first started lifting i would get to a certain point and my body could not balance the weight and i would literally topple over. luckily i never got hurt that way but it was embarrassing. i know now that i go way deeper and i dont have that problem anymore. ive never had anyone take a pic or video, but my friend says its parallel. its strange because my back is very unsteady while warming up but it sort of "sets in" after a few light sets. so then i can lift the heavier weights without much problem.
