Hi PetaCanabis

I fly out to Cancun on Sunday - I'd be grateful if you or anyone here could write me a quick blurb in Spanish as to what I can and can't eat to show waiters/staff in restaurants.

I read somewhere that even beans can be cooked in lard in Mexico.

Any vegan tips for Mexico would be much appreciated folks.

HI DUDES, I AM GLAD TO HEAR FROM YOU AND YES BIENVENIDO IS OK

CANCUN AND COZUMEL ARE VERY CLOSE , ROBERT CAN TELL YOU WHAT HE USED TO EAT .

HEY TARZ, LET ME TELL YOU THAT VEGAN FOOD IS THE BIGEST PROBLEM THAT I HAVE IN MEXICO

OUR CULTURE IS MUCH ABOUT MEAT AND BEANS WITH LARD AND CRUELTY FOOD AND NOBODY IS FAMILIAR WITH VEGETARIANISM AND NOTHING ABOUT VEGANISM (YOU CAN TELL THE WAITER I DONT EAT MEAT AND HE WILL OFFER YOU CHICKEN YOU WILL SAY NO, AND HE WILL OFFER YOU FISH , THEN YOU CAN SAY ARE YOU DEAF OR STUPID

BUT SPECIALY IF YOU GO TO CANCUN THERE IS A PLACE IN DOWN TOWN NAMED 100% NATURAL THAT IS A GOOD RESTAURANT AND IS VERY GOOD THEY HAVE DIFERENT VEGETRIAN AND VEGAN DISHES , AND IF YOU EAT AT THE HOTEL , that is the dificult part , be carefull if you ask for a salad SOMETIMES THEY AD CHICKEN OR PORK TO THE SALADS (STUPID BUT THEY DO)

IF YOU ASK FOR BEANS YOU HAVE TO ASK WITH OUT "MANTECA " THAT IS LARD

YOU CAN HAVE RICE SALADS BEANS WITHOUT MANTECA FRUIT COCKTAILS I AM NOT SURE THAT THEY HAVE SOY AT THE HOTELS SO BE CAREFULL

BUT LET ME TELL YOU SOMETHING DUDE YOU WILL LOVE CANCUN , THAT IS PARADISE

ASK ROBERT HE SURELY KNOW CANCUN CANCUN HUHUHUHUHUHUH

BYE

Thanks for that.

I now know to avoid Manteca.

Luckily my hotel is in Downtown, so looks like I'll be eating at 100% Natural a lot. Is it relatively cheap or expensive just out of curiousity?

Presumably I'd be OK at some of the American type eating establishments?

I'm sure I'll love Cancun.

Thanks again.

I was researching Cancun on the internet and I read on a few forums that it is no cheaper than London - you pay the same there as I would here. Perhaps that was refering to just the touristy hotel zone.

What is a nopales?

I intend to go to Chichen Itza - hopefully I'll be able to post a few pics once I'm back.

Anywhere else you'd recommend - I heard there was quite a hippyish/alternative town out of Cancun - Baju or something like that??

TULUM IS A HIPPY NUDE BEACH COOL PLACE TO VISIT MY FRIEND

CHICHEN SUPER MUST CISIT PLACE

NOPAL IS A CACTUS PLANT WITH THORNS YOU CUT THE THORNS AND YOU EAT IT IS VERY NUTRITIVE IS PURE PROTEIN AND MINERALS IS VERY MEXICAN I LOVE IT BUT SOME PEOPLE DONT, YOU CAN CONVINE TORTILLA NOPALES AGUACATO CHILLI AND IS A POWER MIX

IS A LITTLE BIT SLIMY THAT IS WHY PEOPLE DONT LIKE IT BUT IS GOOD FOR DIABETHES AND TO CONTROL GLUCOSA IN BLOOD

ITS A SHAME THAT YOU CANT TRY PULQUE THAT IS A NOTHER BEBERAGE EXTRACTED OF ANOTHER PLANT (MAGUEY) IS PROTEIN AND IS BETTER THAN VIAGRA

Yeah, I don't mind paying to go the bars n disco's - I'm on holiday after all!

I'll try and check out Tulum.

I will try Nopal - it sounds like it has many good properties - I will let you know if I like the taste!

Pulque could almost tempt me to start drinking alcohol again.

Hola Tarz - ,

I'm a gringo but grew up largely near the US/Mex. border and have traveled a bit in Mexico as well. Never had any big problems eating vegan and there are a growing number of Vegano Mexicano's.

Eating out can be a bit tricky, esp. if you don't know the language but it's the same as anywhere - ya have to ask a lot of questions. And like everywhere, some folks may be more interested in getting you money than telling the truth so it's important to be careful how you phrase your questions. A lot of stuff that may look vegan isn't: lard in the beans, tortilla's cooked with lard, rice cooked with chicken broth, guacamole with mayonaise in it, etc.

That said, there are a good amount of health/natural food stores and even mainstream stores usually carry TVP and soymilk.

Have fun in Cancun and come visit us in Portland this August!

Welcome!

I spent a month in Mexico when I was in high school...I actually started college as a Spanish major.

I ate lots of nopales when I was down there....pretty good! Didn't like pulque so much though. Lots and lots of other good food though...I actually lived with a vegetarian family when I was there! They were the only vegetarians I met during the whole time I was there! I'd give anything to have them cooking for me again, I ate REALLY well down there.

Anways - welcome again

Hi again PETACANABIS.

Mexico is good - weather poor on Monday and Tuesday, but hot sincethen. I got a bit sunburnt yesterday. You could cook food off me...

Cancun is OK - I like Downtown, and just watching how you Mexicans work, rest and play. I don't like the Hotel Zone much - too developed and tacky for me. I don´t think much of the bars and clubs here, but maybe that's because I'm not an 18yr old American on GradWeek/Summer Vacation.

The beach and sea here in Cancun are nice.

I like Nopales - very tasty.

In some shoops they are health food snacks and biscuits called Naturale Intergrales or something like that - soy snacks or oat meal cookies in different flavours. Do you know if any of these are vegan - some are labelled only in Spanish, some in English ( I'm not sure about the margarine?). There are a few brands - like Sariah - can you help?

I've been drinking Ades soya milk - there are a lot of nice flavours. There are a few other brands of soy milk I can' remember at the moment.

I've ate a lot at 100% Natural.

I won't make it to Chichen Itza now, didn't fancy 7hrs on a bus there and back....

I made it to Tulum on a public bus, just as it was closing. They wouldn't let me in for two minutes, couldn't believe it - 5hrs travelling and didn't really get to see it. I kicked up a fuss, so much so the staff threatened to call the police.

Yucutan seems really nice - would like to explore the area and Mexico properly one day, the food would be a worry though.

There seems to be a lot of health food stores around, healthy eating seems popular here, 100% Natural is always busy.

from living on the border i can tell you what i usually choose if i have to eat at a restaurant. i go for the chilaquiles, which i basically tortilla strips drenched in a green salsa. they are usually topped with cheese but i just ask them to leave that off. or there's also papas a la mexicana, also called papas rancheras. these are potatoes with tomato, onion, and jalapenos or some other type of chile. they are really tasty. still, i try to make these dishes at home so i know that there is no lard involved in the preparing.

another one of my favorites when out on the mexican side of this bordertown is the steamed corn you can find on the corner. there is usually a guy with a little stand and a big bucket where he steams the corn on the cob. it has several options for toppings. the most common is mayonaisse, grated cheese, and chile. yeah i know, we will find some way to make it unhealthy. i, of course, steer clear of that recipe. i usually ask for them to squeeze fresh lime juice on it and some salt. then dash on the chile powder.

there are usually lots of fruit stands as well. with lots of pineapple, watermelon, papaya, mango, etc. usually also offered with chile powder as a optional topping. the agua de fruta they make from these fruits are delicious drinks.

now if you want to try a soda, i highly recommend having a brand called Joya. the have several flavors: orange, lemon lime, pineapple, fruit punch. but my all time favorite is sabor de manzana, the apple flavor. i am trying to steer clear of sodas because they have a lot of sugar and all. but if once i long while i'm gonna have a soda, it's gonna be a Joya sabor de manzana.

i remember once in daddy o disco there were a couple having sex in front of all the people , they were very high to notice what they were doing

i like to jogging at the hotel zone they have a nice track to do it

I hate to state the obvious, but having spent the last 8 months being sick on-off, a word of advice - if you get sick (traveler's diarhea) at the end of your trip, GO TO THE DOCTOR. Kristy and I both got sick at the end our of wonderful Mexican honeymoon. She got some antibiotics for it, but I didn't (typical tough guy). I ended up with a parasite that has dogged me for 8 months. A visit to the hospital and a strong antibiotic has finally kicked it, but I spent a lot of time getting to know my commode in the past 8 months (and not being able to train, and losing and having to re-gain the weight).

Having said that, snorkeling at Xel-ha is an awesome day trip. We didn't swim with the poor dolphins, but we did spend almost the whole day underwater. It was definitely worth the trip.

Thanks for the tips Ronnie - I'm now home but will hopefully be able to try your tips another time.

PETA - yeah it was bleedin hip-hop, urban and RnB everywhere. I never made it to Daddy O's but it looked popular. Wasn't impressed with Senor Frogs, The City was an impressive venue which I'm sure is good when it isn't virtually empty like it was when I was there. I went to Coco Bongo's on Saturday, that was OK - the trapeze artists are very good. I never get my money's worth at these free bar places as I don't drink. Hung out with a nice girl from Mexico City in there. I wanted a night out in Downtown along the main strip near 100% Natural - there looked some good bars and clubs on that road - my mate wasn't up for that though. It would of been good to play with the locals instead of a load of drunks and kids in the main zone.

I ran on the track between Downtown and Hotel Zone - only so far though as it bloody miles, and it is hard work in the heat and humidity and very little sleep!! If I was feeling crazy I could of run from Downtown all the way to the night-club drag, then all the way along the main road to the end of the hotel zone!! That is a long way - Cancun is big, too big I thought!! Didn't like being reliant on buses........

I hope to go back to Mexico one day.

finbarrio - I know what you mean, I got food poisoning in India in March. That laid me low for six weeks or so, and that was bad enough. 8 months!! I feel for you... Glad you have finally shifted it.

Xel-Ha and Xcaret looked good, but didn't go because of the dolphins and I believe they also keep other animals. The snorkelling and other stuff did look good there though. There are a few other places around there that look good - forget exactly what they are called now - where you could do the cavern diving. Coba looked good too, but like again Chichen Itza, it was too much time spent on a bus to really justify it though.

I was concerned about the amount of jungle being cleared for new hotels and attractions ( golf courses etc ), but unfortunately I can see the development going on and on.......
