I dont see pissing of conservatives as a problem, being pissed off by any progressive ideas is what makes them conservatives . I think it is far worse that they piss off radical, antisexist people.

You are implying that conservatives are inherently sexist, which is blatantly not true.

No, Im not implying that.

PETA can piss off conservatives with impunity. Oh. OK then. That's all right. Why shouldn't PETA also piss off radicals, intentionally or not? How is it far worse?? What makes radicals so special? I am quite sure though that PETA doesn't seek to piss off either conservatives or radicals.

I didnt mean that PETA should try to piss off conservatives as much as possible, only that progressive political ideas are quite likely to piss off conservatives, so it might be hard to avoid.

I also think that in general it's likely worse if they are pissing off radical people, because then they are more likely to be doing something wrong, for instance being sexistic.

The best thing would of course be if they could present their animal rights message without pissing off anyone, but that is not an easy thing.

PETA does tons of things that have nothing to do with men or women other than them speaking in clothes. Most of the activities the organize don't involve any of these things at all. Nobody notices because the media only pays attention to the naked demos. Maybe more groups(all kinds) need to do nude demos so PETA doesn't look like the only group doing it...then the stupid anti sex yet horny in private american public can understand what their saying.

It's no secret that this method of campaiging doesn't bother me, but for those it does you would be more credible if you were equally opposed to PETA using male nudes.

Women have traditionally been depicted as the passive object of the active male gaze (in media, art, advertisements, etc.). There is no parallel history of males being depicted in this way (in a consistant manner).

Maybe if men see enough women nude in public arenas they would feel the same...by the way none of the women I'm friends with are passive objective about male nudes unless they are average looking. If they're good looking they act just as lude as men I know...I'm assuming you have no idea what women act like at strip clubs. They are far more involved(excited and touchy) then men are.

It has absolutely nothing to do with being anti-sex. It has to do with sexism and also just the absolute bizarre irrelevance of being naked with respect to veganism. Again the vegans who object are generally the most liberal out there. I, for one, wouldn't care if people just casually walked around nude all the time.

Anyway PETA has turned me off. I have nothing to do with PETA because of their bizarre stuff. I don't see the point in giving them suggestions because I find them so bizarre I think we have no common ground. That all their supporters seem unable to comprehend what sexism is, says a lot. Some of you can't even comprehend that women have been discriminated throughout history compared to men!!!!!

I don't have time for a pointless long discussion trying to explain to people what sexism is, what exploitatin is, etc.

PETAbodybuilder, that's good that Ingrid has got herself out there I guess. I couldn't find any mostly nude pics of her online though. Is she hot? Anyway I guess you pretty much answered my questions. I, in turn, explained why I think PETA is mistaken. That's that. I'm certain nothing of use will come of it.

Surely women have been discriminated more than men throughout history and at a time they were also forced to be dressed in a certain way...now its their choice to do as they please...these are not women being forced to do these things. Maybe the nudity is irrelevant(other than the skin/fur demos) but it gets attention when otherwise non at all would be paid.

They may do as they please but there are still certain harmful attitudes that men will hold towards women. Still today it can be a surprise to find a woman in a powerful position in society. Women are judged far more by the appearance of their body then men. People should be judged by their actions and their minds. To a greater extent then men, women are still judged by their bodies.

Carol Adams has a couple books: The Sexual Politics of Meat and The Pornography of Meat where she shows how treating women like a piece of meat (judging them by their bodies) is akin to meat eating. It should be expected that vegans would be more sensitive to sexism than the average meat eater.

Yes, but I think the attention it gets turns off a lot of the sorts of people who would be most likely to become vegans. And they can get attention other ways. They could have a concert. They could even have their own menudo type band. They can use celebrities (although maybe stay away from Dennis Rodman, Brittany Spears, Pamela, etc?). They can do controversial stuff like comparing meat eating to slavery, genocide, etc.

Almost everyone I know that went vegan did so due to info on PeTA's various sites, including myself.

I went vegetarian from a local a/r group, but later learned more through PeTA's info and that's what turned me vegan.

They are not a perfect organization, but nobody can question the amount they have acheived for animals, and the extensive great work they have put together on their sites and information which really helps educate others.

If you read the thread you will find that the only thing questioned here is their sexism.

PETA2 deals with concerts every single day and nobody gets nude...they already do the controversial things you speak of and it still doesn't get as much attension as the nudity. As for women moving up in society it will happen as it has been...last year was the first year in US history that more women were enrolled in college than men...in twenty years I can imagine the correlation in work and income will be the same...for the most part as of now women make less than men because the percentage of men in the workplace with college degrees is higher than that of women but it time that'll all change thank goodness. Same with nudity...I'm not gonna be excited to see it but maybe more men should get naked for PETA so its more if a 50/50 shot!

Even with way more things on my plate than I can handle, I'll still put a letter together for PETA because we (as a group) obviously have a few concerns. I think there will always be a love/hate relationship with PETA for most people. It is just the way it is.

I don't like the exploitation of women, and I see it all over, especially in places like L.A. (coming from a small town in Oregon). It is everywhere and is a problem, but no exploitation of people (women or men) could equal to the problem of 27 billion painful unnecessary deaths every year. That cannot be forgotton.

I think PETA is just doing what is most effective, even if it isn't the most tasteful or tactful approach.

We should start a thread against Hooters or something and give PETA a break for a bit. Afterall, not only does Hooters exploit women putting them on display but also causes millions of animal deaths per year.

We'll send a letter to PETA and talk with them over the phone. We just need concrete suggestions/solutions or it means nothing to just complain about what we don't like.

Another thing we should ask ourselves individually, is "what have I done to save lives lately?" Those working with PETA probably have a pretty quick answer.

I do recognize there is a problem and I get annoyed with exploitation of women in movies, TV, billboards, advertisements, etc. so I'd like to see PETA do something different....we just need to know "what" and address the powers that be with evidence. (perhaps we should put our "plans" to the test and present results?) Some we can't do because of limited finances, but others we can do.

If anyone wants to summarize the key ideas for PETA and re-post them somewhere that will make my writing job easier, since I've got about 10 projects I'm working on, many of them with deadlines coming soon.

Thanks.

I say we open a vegan hooters with Robert and I in skimpy clothes as a protest to the regular hooters...surely we'll need more than two waiters so if anyone else wants to jump in go ahead

Count me in .

Even though the world is slowly going in the direction that I want I would even go up on stage and put on a show in skimpy hotpants to make it go a little faster in that direction

If you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen.

I like human sexuality and have absolutely no objection to PETA's overt use of the female form. I think it's catchy and poignant. I'm all for their pushy campaigns - it's a wake-up call to some and a slap in the face to others - and can't we just agree that those others needed a slap in the face? Serves 'em right, I say!

I am anxiously waiting to see if Jonathan is going to 'jump in' to be a vegan hooter.

Good call then the only thing I have to worry about is really good looking vegan girls trying to take me home after we close.
